| Weekly Fish Report for week ending: December 26, 1998
The pesky north winds dominated the East Cape weather this
week, with daytime air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to near
60 at night, water temp about 75deg. With six consecutive
windy days, no boats were sent out this week. Inshore fishing
from shore remains good for pargo, jacks & sierra - bait
and casted Krocodiles best.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: December 19, 1998
A nice week of typical December weather conditions with daytime
air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to near 60 at night, water
temp in the upper 70's, calm seas with occasional north winds.
Not many boats were sent out this week as we just reopened
at midweek, but those that did were rewarded with some great
marlin and dorado action. Striped marlin to 170lbs were found
tailing and took slow trolled or casted live bait from Leonero
to the lighthouse from 2 to 15 miles offshore. Several blues
were taken in the same area, mostly in trolled lures - green/black,
purple/black, & pink/black working best. Dorado to 45lbs
were found in open water up to 20 miles out - mostly on tuna
feathers and small marlin lures, with smaller fish to 25lbs
were working around the buoys off La Ribera and were hitting
Krocodiles and live sardinas. Inshore fishing from shore,
pangas, or kayaks continues to remain good for roosterfish,
pargo, jacks & sierra - bait, Krocodiles and trolled hoochies
best.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 28, 1998
Another week of nice fall weather conditions with daytime
air temp in the low 80's, cooling to near 60 at night, water
temp about 80 deg, flat calm seas with 1 day of north winds.
The fishing action for striped marlin to 160lbs was wide open
from Leonero to the lighthouse from 1 to 8 miles offshore.
Some boats caught and released up to 5 fish per day. They
were found tailing and took slow trolled or casted live bait
- for eight of our anglers it was their first billfish ever!
Sailfish to 100lbs were tailing in the same area as the stripers
and provided excellent action for several light tackle anglers
this week. Dorado to 25lbs were found around the buoys off
La Ribera and were hitting Krocodiles and live sardinas. Yellowfin
tuna action slowed a bit this week, but we had several days
of good action from Pescadero to Las Baracas 2 to 8 miles
offshore, where fish to 35lbs were taken while feeding with
porpoise. Live bait, cedar plugs and tuna clones best. Blue
marlin were less active this week, but several fish to 250lbs
were caught and released - green/black, purple/black, &
pink/black trolled lures worked best. Pargo and amberjack
to 30lbs were hitting pieces of giant squid (which were running
up to 50 lbs) over the reefs off La Ribera while fishing off
the bottom. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, or kayaks
remains good for roosterfish, pargo, jacks & sierra -
bait, Krocodiles and trolled hoochies best.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 21, 1998
Another week of beautiful fall weather conditions with daytime
air temp in the low 80's, cooling to the mid 60's at night,
water temp from 81 to 83 deg, flat calm seas with 1 day of
moderate north winds. The fishing action was very consistent
with catches of blue marlin to 210lbs, striped marlin to 125lbs,
sailsfish to 95lbs, yellowfin tuna to 45lbs, and dorado to
25lbs. Inshore fishing was equally good, with catches of roosterfish,
pargo, cabrilla and sierra. Billfish were found from La Ribera
to Cabo Pulmo from 1 to 12 miles offshore. The blues hit lures
- green/black, purple/black and pink/black worked the best.
The stripers and sails were found tailing and hit slow trolled
or casted live bait. The tuna were found with porpoise from
Leonero to the lighthouse, 1 to 15 miles from shore. Live
bait, cedar plugs, hoochies and tuna clones of all colors
were producing results. Dorado were feeding near the buoys
from Punta Pescadero to La Ribera and favored slow trolled
live bait and squid. Inshore fishing from the beach, kayaks
& pangas was best from Leonero to the lighthouse, with
Krocodiles, live bait, strip bait and hoochies all working
well.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 14, 1998
Another nice week of fall fishing with many boats limiting
out on dorado and yellowfin tuna. Daytime air temp in the
mid 80s, with cool mornings, calm seas most of the week, afternoon
breezes with north winds for 3 days. Water temp about 82 deg.
Boats went out every day this week, with catches of dorado
to 35lbs, tuna to 30lbs, blue marlin to 250lbs, sailfish to
100lbs, and striped marlin to 180lbs. The most productive
area was from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo from 1 to 12 miles offshore.
Live bait, strip bait, frozen squid, cedar plugs and dark
colored trolling lures all worked well this week.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 7, 1998
Beautiful fall weather with daytime air temp in the mid 80's,
cool evenings and mornings, water temp 81 to 82deg, calm seas
most of the week with 3 days of moderate north wind. Boats
went out every day, with most of the action from Leonero south
to Cabo Pulmo. Blue marlin continue to prowl the area with
fish up to 400lbs hooked this week. One big blue hit a black/purple
hoochie less than a mile off Punta Colorada while most were
caught about 2 to 8 miles offshore. Black/purple, pink/black,
and green/black patterns working best. Striped marlin to 160lbs
and sailfish to 100lbs were found tailing from Leonero to
the lighthouse 1 to 5 miles out. Casted and slow trolled live
bait were deadly this week. Dorado to 45lbs were active again
off the La Ribera buoys and 1/2 mile off the lighthouse, with
early limits of fish from 8 to 25 lbs, eating sardinas flylined
and slow trolled. Yellowfin tuna to 25lbs were found late
in the week off the lighthouse and Las Baracas feeding on
sardinas. Cedar plugs, hoochies & Krocodiles all worked
well. Several wahoo to 40lbs came in this week while trolling
for billfish, with black/purple working best. Inshore fishing
from pangas, kayaks or shore was producing roosterfish to
15lbs, pargo to 12lbs, and sierra to 6lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 31, 1998
Nice fall weather all week with daytime air temp in the mid
80's, cool evenings, water temp also in the mid 80's, calm
seas most of the week with light to moderate afternoon breezes.
Blue marlin to 250lbs were active from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo
4 to 10 miles out, with all fish taken on lures this week.
Pink/black, orange/yellow and black/green working best. Striped
marlin to 180lbs and sailfish to 100lbs were found tailing
between Leonero and Cabo Pulmo 1 to 8 miles offshore, taking
casted or slow trolled live bait. Dorado to 35lbs were very
active around the buoys from Punta Pescadero to La Ribera.
Several boats had early limits flylining live sardinas near
the buoys. Pink/black, and green/black trolling lures also
worked well. Yellowfin tuna to 40lbs were found offshore with
porpoise, hitting cedar plugs, tuna feathers and live bait.
Football-sized fish were schooling over reefs from Pescadero
to Las Baracas. Live bait, strip bait, squid & hoochies
all got results. Inshore fishing from pangas, kayaks or shore
was producing roosterfish to 15lbs, pargo to 10lbs, pompano
to 5lbs, and sierra to 8lbs. Casted or trolled Krocodiles,
squid and strip bait were very effective.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 24, 1998
A return to normal conditions here after the passing of several
tropical systems, although we did get a couple of days of
north wind this week. Fishing was not hampered and most of
the week we had typical fall weather - air temp in the mid
to high 80's, water temp about 84 deg, calm seas with light
afternoon SE breezes. Blue marlin to 250lbs were very active
from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo 3 to 8 miles offshore. Most fish
hitting dorado, squid and mackerel pattern trolled lures,
however several nice blues hit slow trolled live mackerel
and baracuta. Striped marlin and sailfish continue to bend
rods with stripers to 180lbs and sails to 110lbs found tailing
from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo from 1 to 8 miles out. Casted or
slow trolled live bait working best. Yellowfin tuna to 45lbs
were found this week with porpoise, but most of the action
was provided by 8 to 25lb fish found close in over reefs from
Leonero to Las Baracas - live bait, strip bait, tuna feathers,
hoochies and cedar plugs all working well. Dorado to 35lbs
were very active this week around the bouys from Punta Pescadero
to La Ribera. Many boats limited out here with fish in 8 to
20lb class. Great action for our fly fishermen. Inshore fishing
from pangas, kayaks or shore was yielding pargo, small roosterfish
and sierra.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 17, 1998
Nice weather early in the week, with air temp in the mid
to high 80's, water temp about 84 deg, calm seas with light
afternoon SE breezes [north wind came in at week's end]. Strong
billfish and tuna bite continues at the East Cape this week,
however, all the hotels pulled their boats on Friday due to
threatening Hurricane Madeline. At this time the storm appears
to be moving towards the mainland. The great blue marlin bite
continues, with the best results about 3 to 10 miles off Cabo
Pulmo, with fish to 600lbs [average 250lbs] taking darker
colored trolled lures. Sailfish and striped marlin [unusual
this time of year] action continues throughout the bay, with
live mackerel working best. Large yellowfin tuna are under
big schools of porpoise from 10 to 30 miles out, from Leonero
on south, averaging 45lbs, with the largest weighing in at
141lbs. Cedar plugs trolled far back were deadly, with live
sardines and mackerel also working well. The dorado are getting
a bit larger, with school-sized fish averaging 15lbs, with
some larger fish to 55lbs coming in. A large dead whale offshore
is producing literally thousands of dorado, with live sardines,
strip bait, squid, and hoochies all working well.
Dr. John Johnson of San Diego, CA, took 5 blue marlin to
370lbs, and 11 yellowfin to 95lbs while fishing 2 days on
a cruiser.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 10, 1998
Nearly a carbon copy of last week with continued great weather,
cooling air temp in the mid to high 80's, water temp 86 to
88 deg, calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes [midweek
saw a couple of windier days] and clear skies. The wide mix
of game fish continues, with blue marlin to 300lbs working
close inshore from 2 to 5 miles off La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo
with dark colored lures still working best - black/purple
& green/black. Stripers and sails were found tailing in
the same waters and took mostly flylined or casted live bait.
Yellowfin tuna to 100lbs continued to be found with porpoise
in open blue water from La Ribera on south. Football sized
tuna remain active over the reefs in Palmas Bay, La Ribera
and Las Baracas. Live bait, trolled lures & cedar plugs
all worked well on the tuna. Dorado bite is continues to get
better with some larger fish coming in, and a continued showing
of school sized 10 to 20lb fish, found from Palmas Bay to
Cabo Pulmo hitting anything, with live sardinas working best.
Lots of wahoo to 50lbs were taken in the same waters at week's
end, and hit mostly dark colored marlin lures.
Congratulations to Andy Holguin of Oak View, Ca, as the winner
of our "Win the Trip of a Lifetime" promotion.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 3, 1998

mix of fish coming in every afternoon. Blue marlin to 350lbs
were close inshore from 1 1/2 to 3 miles off La Ribera to
Cabo Pulmo with dark colored lures working best - black/purple
& green/black. Stripers - unusually active for this time
of year - and sails were found tailing in the same waters
and took flylined or casted mackerel and some dark colored
trolled lures. Yellowfin tuna to 80lbs continued to be found
with porpoise in open blue water from La Ribera to Los Frailes.
Football sized tuna remain active over the reefs in Palmas
Bay, La Ribera and Las Baracas. Live bait, trolled lures &
cedar plugs all worked well on the tuna. Dorado bite continues
to improve, with some nice fish taken to 40lbs, and a good
showing of school sized 8 to 20lb fish, found from Palmas
Bay to Cabo Pulmo hitting anything, with live sardinas working
best. Wahoo to 45lbs were taken in the same waters and hit
black/purple marlin lures. Inshore fishing from kayaks or
boats yielded pargo and amberjack, with trolled Krocodiles,
lures, live bait and squid dropped to the bottom working best.
Roosterfish to 30lbs are slamming live bait close to shore
from Leonero to the lighthouse.
Walter Ludwig & Ed Dillon of San Bernardino, CA, took
a 350lb+ blue fishing a super panga using 30lb test on a live
mackerel.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 26, 1998
Beautiful weather again this week with cooling air temp in

light afternoon SE breezes and clear skies. Excellent fishing
offshore and inshore with catches of blue marlin, striped
marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado, pargo, amberjack,
wahoo and roosterfish. Blue marlin to 300lbs were hitting
lures from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo from 5 to 20 miles offshore
- pink was the hot lure color with mackerel and dorado patterns
also getting bit. Stripers to 180lbs and sails to 110lbs were
found tailing in the same waters and took flylined or casted
live bait. Yellowfin tuna to 90lbs were found with porpoise
in open blue water from La Ribera to Los Frailes. Football
sized tuna remain active over the reefs in Palmas Bay, La
Ribera and Las Baracas. Live bait, trolled lures & cedar
plugs all worked well on the tuna. Dorado to 50lbs, with a
good showing of school sized 8 to 25lb fish, were more active
this week from Palmas Bay to Cabo Pulmo hitting live bait,
strip bait, squid, trolled lures and flies. Wahoo to 45lbs
were taken in the same waters and hit black/purple marlin
lures. Inshore fishing from kayaks or boats yielded pargo
to 37lbs, amberjack to 60lbs, and tuna to 15lbs. Trolled Krocodiles,
lures, live bait and squid dropped to the bottom were very
effective. Roosterfish to 25lbs are slamming live bait close
to shore from Leonero to the lighthouse.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 19, 1998
Nice weather all week, with clear skies, flat calm seas,
light afternoon SE breezes, air temp to the mid 90's, and
water temp of 86 - 88 deg. Blue marlin, stripers and sailfish
continue to bend rods this week, with fish being found from
La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo 2 to 10 miles offshore. The stripers
and sails were found tailing and took casted live bait. The
blues were all blind strikes on trolled lures. Limits of football-sized
yellowfin tuna were found close in over the reefs off La Ribera,
with larger fish to over 100lbs found further south, from
Las Baracas to Los Frailes. Live bait, squid, cedar plugs,
hoochies and tuna feathers all worked well. Wahoo to 50lbs
returned to the fish count this week, with live bait and dark
colored lures working best. Pargo & amberjack to 30lbs
were taken over the La Ribera reefs with weighted live bait,
strip bait & squid. School sized dorado to 15lbs were
caught trolling live sardinas, mackerel, strip bait, squid,
hoochies and small lures near the buoys off La Ribera and
around floating debris.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 12, 1998
Rain hampered fishing during the 1st half of the week, but
the last several days have been very nice with clear skies,
flat calm seas, light afternoon SE breezes, air temp to the
mid 90's, and water temp of 86 - 88 deg. Blue marlin to 250lbs,
stripers to 180lbs and sailfish to 90lbs are hungry after
the recent storms. Fish were found from La Ribera to Cabo
Pulmo 2 to 10 miles offshore. The stripers and sails were
tailing and took live bait casted or slow trolled. The blues
came out of the deep & hit trolled lures - red/black,
purple/black, green/black & bleeding mackerel were the
best bet. In addition, yellowfin tuna to 35lbs were found
close in over the reefs off La Ribera. Several boats had early
limits. Live sardinas, squid, cedar plugs, hoochies and tuna
feathers all worked well. Pargo & amberjack to 35lbs were
taken over the same reefs with weighted live bait, strip bait
& squid. School sized dorado to 15lbs were caught trolling
live sardinas, mackerel, strip bait, squid, hoochies and small
lures near the buoys off La Ribera and around floating debris.
Wahoo have also been cruising the area and shredding lures
and trolled baits.
Sam & Debbie Scott of La Costa, CA, during two days of
cruiser fishing, took two blues to 208lbs, a 150lb striper,
and a 60lb sailfish - (1st billfish for both).
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 5, 1998
Hurricane Isis rolled into the area early on the 2nd, and
has shut down fishing for the last few days. We expect the
dorado fishing to explode with all the floating debris in
the water. This report will be updated on the 7th or 8th,
once we get a couple of days of fishing in.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 29, 1998
Another perfect week on the East Cape with cooler than normal
temperature - air to the mid-90's, nice afternoon SE breezes,
water temp 85 to 88 deg & indigo blue water close to shore.
Calm seas all week made for very enjoyable fishing with catches
of blue marlin to 350lbs, striped marlin to 180lbs, sailfish
to 110lbs, yellowfin tuna to 70lbs, pargo to 28lbs, amberjack
to 90lbs, roosters to 25lbs, and dorado to 68lbs. The billfish
have been in close with blues dominating the action with consistent
hookups from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo; best bet for blues - trolled
lures - green/black, flying fish, bleeding mackerel and black/purple
colors best. All the stripers and sails were found tailing
& took live bait presented to them. Football sized yellowfin
with some tuna to 30lbs have been caught 1/2 mile off the
pier at Leonero & in Palmas Bay where giant squid, pargo
& amberjack have been bending rods, with squid and live
sardinas doing the trick. The larger yellowfin have been found
south with the porpoise, with live bait, cedar plugs, hoochies
and tuna feathers working well. Dorado action was a bit slow,
but the fish taken this week were large & took slow trolled
bait in open water & around the buoys. Roosters &
jacks remain close to shore providing excellent action from
our pier, kayaks, or the beach.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 22, 1998
Best fishing of the year this week with multiple hookups
of blue marlin to 400lbs and sailfish to 125lbs - plus daily
limits of yellowfin tuna to 70lbs. The dorado bite continues
to improve this week with numerous fish to 45lbs. In addition,
pargo to 35lbs, amberjack to 50lbs and roosterfish to 35lbs
remain active close to shore and over reefs. The blue water
is back within 1 mile of shore this week, the sardinas continue
to increase in numbers, and all the gamefish are in close.
The best spot for blues is between La Ribera and the lighthouse
about 5 miles offshore. The sails and yellowfin have been
feeding in the same area. The big blues are hitting green/black,
purple/black and bleeding mackerel lures, the sails are found
in schools tailing and are taking live bait. The tuna are
hitting live sardinas, mackerel, cedar plugs, hoochies and
tuna feathers of all colors.
Dennis Spike and Gundy Gunderson, kayak fishermen and writers
for Pacific Fisherman, have caught yellowfin tuna to 30lbs,
pargo to 28lbs, pompano to 8lbs, and even some rare summertime
sierra while fishing from kayaks from 1/2 to 1 mile in front
of Leonero, casting crocodiles and yo-yoing chrome of the
bottom.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 15, 1998
Beautiful weather this week after the rains of last weekend
- air temp to the mid 90's and water temp from 79 to 83 deg,
calm seas, and light afternoon SE breezes. Green water from
shore to 5 miles out due to runoff from arroyos. Blue marlin
to 350lbs have been very active this week with over 20 caught
and released; all but one came from deep blue water and hit
trolled lures - bleeding mackerel, purple/black, flying fish
and green/black patterns producing best, with most fish taken
from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo from 5 to 15 miles out. Stripers
and sails remain active in the same area, mostly taking live
bait. Limits of football-sized tuna hitting flylined, weighted
or slow-trolled sardinas are off La Ribera where pargo and
amberjack are still active off the bottom. Larger tuna to
70lbs were found from the lighthouse to Los Frailes in blue
water from 5 to 10 miles offshore moving with porpoise, hitting
cedar plugs, dark colored tuna feathers, hoochies and live
bait. Blue marlin and wahoo have also been active close to
the feeding schools of porpoise and tuna. Dorado action improved
a bit this week with schools of 10 to 20lb fish hanging around
the buoys and floating debris from the runoff. Larger dorado
to 50lbs were taken while trolling offshore with marlin lures
or live mackerel. Roosterfish to 35lbs remain active along
the shoreline with slow-trolled live bait the best bet.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 8, 1998
The first half of the week was a carbon copy of last week,
with lots of fish and great weather - air temp in the 90's
and water temp from 83 to 86 deg, calm seas, light afternoon
SE breezes, and deep blue water close to shore. Tropical Storm
Frank brought unsettled conditions at week's end. During the
nice conditions our anglers brought in blue marlin to 250lbs,
yellowfin tuna to 60lbs, stripers to 150lbs, sailfish to 120lbs,
dorado to 45lbs, and pargo and amberjack to 40lbs. Fish were
found in the same areas as last week, from north of Punta
Pescadero to Cabo Pulmo, from 1 to 15 miles out. All the blue
marlin taken were blind strikes on trolled lures from Leonero
to Cabo Pulmo from 5 to 15 miles out, with green/black, purple/black
and bleeding mackerel patterns still working best. Stripers
and sails were found tailing from Leonero to Pulmo from 1
to 10 miles out, mostly taking casted or slow trolled live
bait with some lure strikes. The big yellowfin tuna were found
with porpoise offshore and around giant squid off La Ribera,
and took live mackerel, sardinas, hoochies, and cedar plugs.
Dorado action continues to be best around buoys from Pescadero
to La Ribera and were again hitting live bait, strip bait,
squid, trolled lures of all colors, and hoochies. Amberjack
and pargo were active off La Ribera where the giant squid
are being taken by commercial boats; chrome, blue/white jigs,
live bait and strips of squid also still working best.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 1, 1998
Another great week of fishing at Leonero with continued great
weather - air temp in the 90's and water temp from 83 to 86

marlin to 480lbs, yellowfin tuna to 90lbs, stripers to 180lbs,
sailfish to 130lbs, dorado to 60lbs, pargo and amberjack to
35lbs, and roosterfish to 45lbs. Fish were found a bit closer
to shore this week, from north of Punta Pescadero to Cabo
Pulmo, from 1 to 15 miles out. All the blue marlin taken were
blind strikes on trolled lures from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo
from 3 to 15 miles out, with green/black, purple/black and
bleeding mackerel patterns working best. Stripers and sails
were found tailing from Leonero to Pulmo from 1 to 10 miles
out, mostly taking casted or slow trolled live bait with some
lure strikes. The big yellowfin tuna were found with porpoise
offshore and around giant squid off La Ribera, and took live
mackerel, sardinas, hoochies, and cedar plugs. Dorado action
continues to be best around buoys from Pescadero to La Ribera
and were hitting live bait, strip bait, squid, trolled lures
of all colors, and hoochies. Amberjack and pargo were active
off La Ribera where the giant squid are being taken by commercial
boats; chrome, blue/white jigs, live bait and strips of squid
working best. Roosterfish action fishing continues to be very
good from the Leonero dock to Las Baracas, with fish taking
flylined or slow trolled live bait.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 25, 1998
Excellent fishing and great weather all week - air temp in
the 90's and water temp from 82 to 85 deg, calm seas, light

shore. All boats catching fish, with great catches of yellowfin
tuna to 100lbs, dorado to 50lbs, blue marlin to 350lbs, stripers
to 190lbs, sailfish to 125lbs, roosterfish to 45lbs, pargo
and amberjack to 35lbs, and some giant squid to 40lbs. Fish
were found from north of Punta Pescadero to Cabo Pulmo, from
1 to 20 miles out. All the blue marlin taken were blind strikes
on trolled lures with green/black and bleeding mackerel patterns
working best. Stripers and sails were found tailing and most
took live or dead mackerel presented to them. The big yellowfin
tuna were found with porpoise and took slow trolled or flylined
live bait, black/gold or green/white hoochies, and cedar plugs.
Dorado were found schooling around bouys from Pescadero to
La Ribera and were hitting live bait, strip bait, squid, trolled
lures of all colors, and hoochies. Inshore fishing continues
to be very good from the Leonero dock to Las Baracas. Live
bait worked best on roosters and pargo, while casted and trolled
crocodiles, cut bait, strip bait and squid continued to work
for shore, pier and kayak fishermen.
Lani Waller's Worldwide Anglers group has done very well
this week with fly and conventional tackle: 100lb+ tunas,
spoolings by blue marlin in excess of 350lbs, 6 stripers to
190lbs on fly gear, a 80lb sail, dorado to 40lbs, and tuna
to 25lbs. Lou Rago of San Rafael, CA, hooked and landed a
190lb striped marlin on a 12wt Sage flyrod with a 4.5 Abel
reel while fishing on a panga. The fish took a tan/white sardine
fly and took 45 minutes to land.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 18, 1998
Another great week of fishing, with beautiful weather - air
temp in the 90's and water temp to 83 deg, calm seas, light
afternoon SE breezes, and cobalt blue water within 1 mile
from shore. All boats catching fish, with all species active
this week with catches of yellowfin tuna to 80lbs, dorado
to 60lbs, blue marlin to 300lbs, striped marlin to 185lbs,
sailfish to 125lbs, roosterfish to 50lbs, and pargo/amberjack
to 35lbs. Offshore fishing for yellowfin, dorado and billfish
was best from Leonero to Los Frailes, 1 to 30 miles offshore.
The tuna and dorado hit live bait, trolled lures of all colors,
cedar plugs and rapalas. The dorado have also been active
around the buoys off La Ribera. Stripers and sails were found
tailing and most took live and slow trolled dead bait. All
the blue marlin taken were blind strikes on trolled lures
with black/purple still the best performer. Inshore fishing
continues to be very good from the Leonero dock to Las Baracas.
Live lisa, mackerel and caballitos worked best on roosters
and pargo, while casted and trolled crocodiles, cut bait,
strip bait and squid did the trick for shore, pier and kayak
fishermen.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 11, 1998

the area and are attracting more big fish closer to shore.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 4, 1998
Another great week with air temp in the 90's and water temp
to 83 deg, calm seas and light afternoon SE breezes. All boats
catching fish, with numerous multiple hookups. All species
active this week with catches of blue marlin to 285lbs, striped
marlin to 180lbs, sailfish to 125lbs, yellowfin tuna to 160lbs,
dorado to 54lbs, wahoo to 57lbs, roosterfish to 48lbs, and

green/black, bleeding mackerel & dorado pattern lures
worked best this week. Many of the yellowfin also hit cedar
plugs along with marlin lures and live bait and were found
with feeding porpoise. Roosters and pargo were found inshore
from Leonero to Las Baracas and were eating live bait. Lots
of kids here are enjoying shore, pier and kayak fishing in
front of the resort, with catches of roosters, pargo, pompano
and triggers.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 27, 1998
Nearly a carbon copy of last week with excellent fishing
conditions all week with air temp in the low 90's and water
temp to 83 deg, calm seas and light afternoon SE breezes.
All species active this week both offshore and inshore with
increasing quantities of baitfish moving in with warmer water
temperature. Yellowfin tuna to 150lbs [most fish were in the
70 - 90 lb range] were taken this week, found with porpoise
10 - 20 miles offshore from Punta Pescadero to the lighthouse.
Most fish hit live bait presented in front of the feeding
porpoise. Other schools of football-sized tuna were found
closer to shore and took trolled hoochies and tuna feathers.
Dorado to 50lbs are still active here, but the majority of
fish taken this week were school fish in the 5 to 15 lb range,
eating trolled black/purple lures, squid, live bait and cut
bait from Pescadero to Los Frailes 1 to 20 miles offshore.
Blue marlin to 350lbs were bending rods all week with multiple
hookups on numerous boats. All fish taken here were blind
strikes on lures, with squid and dorado patterns working best,
from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, from 5 to 20 miles out. Striped
marlin and sailfish from 100 to 180 lbs continue to be active,
with the best results from presenting live bait to tailers.
Swordfish are still cruising the area, however none were taken
this week. Roosterfish to 45lbs are active with the arrival
of large schools of bait inshore. Slow trolled live bait was
the best bet from Leonero to the lighthouse. Pargo, grouper
and cabrilla remain active over the reef areas from Leonero
to Las Baracas using live bait, cut bait and squid.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 13, 1998
More great weather again this week with daytime air temp
from the mid 80's to the mid 90's, water temp of 78 deg inside
to 83 deg outside, variable morning clouds, flat calm seas,
and light p.m. southeast breezes. Fishing action flattened
a bit this week after last weekend's explosive action, however,
some nice fish came in this week including some large dorado,
striped marlin, blue marlin, big tuna, roosters, & wahoo.
Dorado to 50lbs [most were 15 to 25lbs] were continuing to
bend rods, found from Pescadero to Pulmo 1 to 15 miles offshore
in open water, hitting live mackerel and trolled lures of
any color. Striped marlin to over 200lbs were found outside
this week about 10 to 25 miles out, mostly hooked by presenting
live bait to tailers. Blue marlin averaging 200 lbs moved
inside this week, taking dark colored lures and live bait,
from 3 to 8 miles out, throughout the bay. Big tuna to over
100 lbs continued to take dark colored marlin lures and live
mackerel off the Pescadero bouys, mixed in with small pods
of porpoise. Roosterfish to 55lbs were everywhere inshore
this week, taking live bait close to shore. Some nice wahoo
to 50lbs were taken from Pulmo to Los Frailes within 2 - 3
miles of shore early in the day.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 6, 1998
Continued great weather again this week with daytime air
temp near 90, water temp of 77 deg inside to 82 deg outside,
flat calm seas, and light afternoon southeast breezes. Fishing
action remained a bit on the slow side at the beginning of
the week then exploded by the weekend, with some nice catches
of large dorado, striped marlin, blue & black marlin,
big tuna, roosters, & wahoo. For the first time this year
trolled lures were getting consistently taken. Dorado to 50lbs
were still bending rods, found from Leonero to Los Frailes
1 to 15 miles offshore, hitting live mackerel and trolled
lures of any color. Most were found in open water, with some
taken around bouys and other floating objects. Striped marlin
continued the season-long pattern and provided great action
this week for fishermen trolling dark colored lures, or presenting
live bait to tailers, from La Ribera to Los Frailes 2 to 25
miles out. Blues, blacks and swordfish were very active at
week's end, with 7 taken on Friday at Leonero - Palmas reported
17 on the same day. Big tuna from 60 to 100 lbs started taking
dark colored marlin lures and live mackerel about 25 miles
straight out from the bay. Roosterfish to 45lbs were everywhere
inshore by week's end, taking live bait close to shore. Some
nice wahoo to 50lbs were taken from Los Frailes to Las Baracas
within 2 - 3 miles of shore early in the day. Lots of bait
in the water, which bodes well for the upcoming weeks.
Jon Kuchar of Rancho Leonero while testing one of our new
cruisers, took and released a 300 lb blue marlin, and boated
2 yellowfin to 67 lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 30, 1998
Beautiful weather again this week with a daytime air temp
in the mid 80's, water temp of 77deg, flat calm seas, and
light afternoon breezes. Fishing action was a little slower
than last week, but there were consistent catches of large
dorado, striped marlin, sailfish, roosters, pargo & skipjack.
A 250lb blue marlin was caught and released on Friday. Dorado
to 55lbs were bending rods with 2 to 3 fish per boat averaging
25lbs, found from Leonero to Los Frailes 1 to 20 miles offshore,
hitting trolled lures of any color, slow trolled live &
dead bait and squid. Most were found in open water, with some
taken around bouys and other floating objects. Striped marlin
and sailfish provided great action all week for fishermen
trolling squid, mackerel & flying fish pattern lures,
or presenting live bait to tailers, from La Ribera to Los
Frailes 2 to 20 miles out. Roosterfish to 50lbs were fairly
active all week in the mornings, taking live bait close to
shore from La Ribera to Punta Colorada. Pargo to 15lbs provided
some tasty fillets for bottom fishermen using weighted live
or cut bait into the reefs from La Ribera to Las Baracas.
We're seeing large numbers of flying fish for the first time
this season, and schools of sardinas are finally starting
to appear, which should attract more fish in the weeks to
come.
Kevin Palmer of Snohomish, WA, fishing a cruiser caught and
released his first billfish, which happened to be a 250lb
blue marlin. The fish took a live bait, and was brought to
leader in 50 minutes on a single speed Penn with 40lb test.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 23, 1998
Excellent weather all week - with no north wind! Hazy skies,
flat calm seas, light afternoon SE breezes with a daytime
high of 85 deg and a water temp of 77 deg made for very good
fishing conditions. We sent out 10 to 20 boats per day this
week with great results for most anglers. Dorado to 60lbs
were taken from the 88 Spot, off Cerralvo to Los Frailes,
2 to 20 miles offshore. Most fish were taken around bouys
or along slick lines and hit slow trolled live bait or lures
- purple/black and green/black best. Striped marlin to 160lbs
were active again all week with multiple hookups for most
boats. The tailing fish were found from Punta Pescadero to
Los Frailes 3 to 15 miles offshore. Most fish took slow trolled
live bait, but some hit squid and mackerel pattern lures.
Yellowfin tuna were active early in the week with fish to
40lbs found in schools both north and south, traveling with
large pods of porpoises and took live bait, rapalas, tuna
feathers and cedar plugs. In addition, there were sails to
110lbs, roosters to 50lbs, wahoo to 35lbs, and a swordfish
weighing 146lbs were taken here this week.
The Doc Ski Fishing Team took the following fish while fishing
2 days on a cruiser - James Labanowski Jr - 146lb swordfish

released - her first. Ray Brown - a 125lb striped marlin released
- his first & a 45lb bull dorado. John Carbone - a 100lb
striped marlin released - his first. The group baited five
other tailing marlin on Friday.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 16, 1998
Beautiful weather with water temp of 76 deg, air temp in
the upper 80's, flat seas with light pm southeast breezes
for 4 days made for excellent fishing conditions. Pesky north
winds at the end of the week slowed the action due to lack
of live bait. Striped marlin to 180lbs were very active all
week, with multiple hookups per boat, from the bouys north
of Pescadero to Cabo Pulmo, 2 - 10 miles offshore. Most fish
were tailing and took live bait, but some were caught off
Las Baracas with weighted baits. Mean Joe Green, bleeding
mackerel and black/purple trolling lures were also effective.
Several blues were hooked and lost on dark colored trolling
lures in the same area. Dorado to 50lbs were thick most of
the week with 2 - 4 fish per boat, in open water and around
floating objects from Pescadero to Pulmo about 1 - 8 miles
out. Slow trolled live mackerel, strip bait, squid and all
colored lures worked well this week. Some tuna to 15lbs and
wahoo to 35lbs were taken on trolled bait, rapalas, marauders,
and tuna feathers from Pulmo south to Vinorama. Inshore action
was off this week. If you're coming down, bring frozen squid,
lead and wire leader.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 9, 1998
Great fishing the first half of the week, with calm seas,
no wind, 74 deg water temp and mid 80's air temp. Variable
winds made for bumpy conditions towards the end of the week.
The main action this week was the wide-open striped marlin
bite, with fish to 150lbs taking mostly live mackerel, with
some action on the trolled lures, from the lighthouse to Cabo
Pulmo, 2 to 10 miles offshore. Presenting live bait to tailers
generated the best results. Lots of nice dorado from 25 to
50lbs were taken in the same area using live and strip bait.
Wahoo to 40lbs were plentiful early in the week, mostly taking
dark colored rapalas and marauders, from Las Baracas to Los
Frailes, 1 to 3 miles out. Pargo were active offshore in 150
to 200 ft of water using weighted live bait.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 2, 1998
Calm seas, no wind, 74 deg water temp and mid 80's air temp
made for an excellent week of fishing here, with catches of
striped marlin to 160lbs, sailfish to 140lbs, dorado to 50lbs,
wahoo to 40lbs, yellowfin tuna to 35lbs, roosterfish to 35lbs,
and lots of inshore fish. Offshore action for marlin, sails,
dorado, tuna & wahoo was best from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo
from 1 to 12 miles offshore. The marlin and sails took some
trolled lures, but most were taken on live mackerel presented
to fish on the surface or by slow trolling weighted macks
- bring lead! The dorado, tuna & wahoo took trolled surface
lures (black & purple best), slow trolled mackerel, and
strip bait. Inshore action for pargo and other bottom species
was best over local reefs between Las Baracas and La Ribera.
Weighted mackerel was the ticket. Roosters continue to cruise
the shore between Leonero and the lighthouse, taking slow
trolled live mackerel.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 25, 1998
The north winds ended this week, leaving spring conditions,
with flat calm morning seas and light afternoon s.e. breezes.

of the week with catches of striped marlin, sailfish, dorado,
roosters, pargo, and a few yellowfin tuna. Striped marlin
to 120 lbs were taking mackerel between La Ribera and the
lighthouse from 2 - 10 miles offshore; most fish surfaced
to check trolled lures or were found tailing when they took
flylined live mackerel. Sailfish to 100 lbs were caught and
released in the same area using the same techniques. Dorado
to 50 lbs were found from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, taking slow-trolled
live bait, strip bait, and dark colored lures around floating
seaweed, the bouys and other floating objects. Roosterfish

with fish from 100 to 130 lbs taking live mackerel and an
occcasional trolled lure. Most fish were taken this week between
La Ribera and Punta Colorada from 2 to 8 miles offshore. Some
sails were mixed in taking live mackerel in the same area.
Dorado to 45 lbs were active early in the week, with an average
of 2 per boat. Best results were from Leonero to Punta Colorada
