Weekly Fish Report for week ending: December 25, 1999

Another week of mild December weather, with daytime highs in the upper 70's, water temp from 72-74deg, with north winds during the day, settling down to calm, cool conditions during the evening and early morning hours. Only five boats went out this week, but every one that did returned with flags flying. The dorado bite continues, and with little pressure large schools are staying near the surface, with most boats returning with limits of 15 to 30lb fish, taking live sardinas, strip bait, squid, hoochies, and Krocodiles, throughout the bay near all buoys and floating structures. Lots of sierra up to 8lbs are inshore close to the beaches, taking fast-trolled hoochies and any type of bait, with the best action at dawn and dusk. Large schools of jacks have been working the inside areas looking for bait, with great action when they're feeding. The cooling water is turning up the pargo bite, with the commercial boats taking lots of fish up to 50lbs, mostly on squid. The bay is also loaded with giant squid to 30lbs, taking anything shiny.

Carl Kopachek of Portland, OR, while fishing one day on a super panga, took 5 dorado to 22lbs, 12 sierra, and 13 giant squid to 30lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: December 18, 1999

Mild December weather prevails, with daytime highs near 80deg, water temp in the low 70's, with north winds during the day, settling down to calm conditions during the evening and early morning hours. Only a few boats went out this week, but every one that did returned with flags flying. The dorado bite is on, with many boats returning with limits of 15 to 30lb fish, taking trolled lures as well as live bait, mostly north from Punta Pescadero to El Cardonal 1 to 4 miles offshore. Lots of tailing marlin are being sighted, but few hookups were reported. Yellowfin tuna are being taken in good numbers off Isla Cerralvo, mostly on live bait.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 27, 1999

Pleasant weather continues, with daytime highs from 80 to 85deg, water temp to around 80deg, with north winds early in the week calming to excellent conditions at week's end. Few boats went out this week, but those that did had some great results, with marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna and wahoo all taken this week. Striped marlin and blues are close in, with most fish taken within 4 miles of Leonero on slow trolled live bait with blind strikes on dark colored trolled lures. Sailfish from 80 to 120lbs remain active, located throughout the bay, mostly on live bait, with a few taking marlin lures. The dorado bite remains on, with many boats returning with limits of 15 to 25lb fish, mostly on live sardinas near the La Ribera buoys. Yellowfin tuna are active off Punta Pescadero, taking sardinas and hoochies. Some wahoo taken this week in the same area, mostly on dark colored rapalas.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 20, 1999

Pleasant weather continues, with daytime highs in the mid 80's, cooling water temp to around 80deg, with calm morning seas and some breezy afternoons. The good fishing continues, with marlin, sailfish, dorado, roosterfish and sierra all taken again this week. Striped marlin to 160lbs have returned to the area, taken throughout the bay on live bait. Big blue marlin from 400 to 500lbs are close in, with most fish taking slow trolled live bait with blind strikes on dark colored trolled lures. Sailfish from 80 to 120lbs remain wide open, with many multiple hookups, located throughout the bay, mostly on live bait, with a few taking marlin lures. The dorado bite remains on, with many boats returning with limits of 15 to 25lb fish, mostly on live sardinas near the La Ribera buoys, with hoochies also producing. The sierra bite remains strong, with lots of fish taken near the beach right in front of the hotel, mostly with hoochies on light tackle. A number of light tackle roosterfish from 10 to 20lbs were also taken this week at Leonero.

Mark Whitehead of Bedford, South Africa, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero cruiser took 10 dorado to 25lbs and released a 100lb sailfish.

Pleasant weather continues, with daytime highs in the mid 80's, warm water temp from 82 to 85deg, with calm morning seas and breezy afternoons. The good fishing continues, with marlin, sailfish, dorado, and sierra all taken this week. Big blue marlin to 500+lbs are close in, with most fish hooked up within 4 miles of Leonero, taking slow trolled live bait with blind strikes on dark colored trolled lures. Sailfish from 80 to 120lbs remain wide open, with many multiple hookups, located throughout the bay, mostly on live bait, with some taking marlin lures. The dorado bite has returned, with many boats returning with limits of 15 to 25lb fish, mostly on live sardinas near the La Ribera buoys, with bright colored feathers and hoochies also producing. The sierra bite is getting even better, with lots of fish taken near the beach right in front of the hotel, mostly with hoochies on light tackle.

Stan Balafas & Paula Panzica of Port Hueneme, CA, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero cruiser took a 270lb blue marlin and released a 90lb sailfish.

Pleasant weather prevails, with air temp in the upper 80's, warm water temp from 82 to 85deg, with breezy conditions at the beginning of the week, settling down to calm morning seas with light afternoon SE breezes by midweek. The good fishing continues, with marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, and sierra all taken this week. Blue marlin to 330lbs are close in, with most fish hooked up within 4 miles of Leonero, taking live bait with blind strikes on dark colored trolled lures. Sailfish from 80 to 120lbs are wide open (1 boat took and released 5 fish in one day), located throughout the bay, mostly on live bait, with some taking marlin lures. The dorado bite has tapered off a bit, but those boats finding schooling dorado have done well, with fish taking live sardinas, bright colored feathers and hoochies. The yellowfin tuna bite remains on near the buoys off La Ribera, with some bigger fish to 40lbs hitting live sardinas and caballito, with limits of football sized tuna off Punta Pescadero. Sierra have moved into the area, with lots of fish taken near the beach throughout the bay, mostly on hoochies.

Jerrel Larmon of Ventura, CA, while fishing 2 days on a Leonero super panga took a 90lb sailfish, a 330lb blue marlin, and limits of yellowfin tuna.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 30, 1999

Continued mild weather this week, with air temp in the upper 80's, warm water temp near 85deg, calm morning seas with light afternoon SE breezes. The good fishing continues, with marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, and pargo all taken this week. Sailfish from 80 to 100lbs were taken throughout the bay, mostly on live bait, with blue marlin to 300lbs also throughout the bay taking black/purple lures. The dorado bite remains strong, with plenty of 15 to 25lb fish throughout the bay under almost all floating structures, taking live sardinas, bright colored feathers and hoochies, with some large solitary bulls to 45lbs taken outside on marlin lures. The yellowfin tuna bite is on near the buoys off La Ribera, with lot of fish from 25 to 35lbs hitting live sardinas and caballito. The wahoo bite has slowed a bit, however a number were taken this week, all on rapalas. The pargo bite has picked up, with a number of fish to 35lbs taken on cut bait near the lighthouse.

Sam & Renee Petroff of Wildomar, CA, while fishing 3 days on a Leonero cruiser took an 80lb sailfish, a blue marlin estimated at 300lbs, and limits of dorado to 45lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 23, 1999

Mild weather this week, with air temp in the upper 80's, water temp from 82 to 85deg, moderate north wind at the beginning of the week, settling down to calm morning seas with light afternoon SE breezes at week's end. The good fishing continues, with sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo, roosterfish and a few blue marlin all taken this week. Sailfish to 100lbs were taken throughout the bay, with bright colored lures, live sardinas and caballito all working well. The dorado bite remains hot, with plenty of 15 to 25lb fish throughout the bay under almost all floating structures, taking live sardinas, bright colored feathers and hoochies, with some large solitary bulls taken outside on marlin lures. The yellowfin tuna bite is back, with most fish 40 to 60lbs, found north of Punta Pescadero, with live sardinas and caballito getting hit. The wahoo bite remains one of the best we've seen in years, with fish up to 60lbs coming in daily, taking dark colored rapalas and marauders. A number of blue marlin were taken and released this week.

Tim Galli of La Verne, CA, while fishing 2 days on a Leonero cruiser took and released a blue marlin, a striped marlin and a sailfish, while also taking 3 tuna to 70lbs and 2 dorado to 50lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 16, 1999

Another great week of mild weather, with air temp to near 90, warm water temp from 85 to 88deg, calm morning seas with light afternoon SE breezes, settling down during the evening. The excellent fishing continues, with billfish dominating the action this week. Blue marlin to 400lbs and lots of sailfish to 100lbs were taken throughout the bay, with some boats having multiple hookups, with lures, live bait and dead bait all working well. The dorado bite remains south, with plenty of 15 to 25lb fish inside, taking live sardinas and hoochies, with some large solitary bulls taken outside on marlin lures. The strong yellowfin tuna bite of last week has tapered off a bit, but some larger fish to 130lbs were taken about 20 miles out, with most of the larger fish taken on lures trolled near schools of porpoise, with live sardinas, cedar plugs and hoochies also producing. Our fly fishermen have been having lots of fun hooking up roosterfish inside, mostly on poppers.

The James Booth group of Riverside, CA, while cruiser fishing for 4 days, took a blue marlin, limits of dorado, and limits of yellowfin to 130lbs.

Another great week of mild weather, with air temp to near 90, warmer water temp to the mid 80's, calm morning seas with light to moderate afternoon SE breezes, settling down during the evening. The excellent fishing continues, with many boats still limiting out and returning early, with the strongest bite south. The dorado remain thick, with plenty of 20 to 25lb fish inside, taking live sardinas and hoochies, with some large solitary bulls taken outside on marlin lures. The strong yellowfin tuna bite continues, with bigger fish this week to 50lbs taken north off Punta Pescadero, with lots of 20 to 30lb fish taken south off Los Frailes, with most of the fish taken on live sardinas, cedar plugs and hoochies. The wahoo bite has tapered off a bit, although there were lots of strikes this week south of Los Frailes, taking black and purple marauders. Blues and sailfish dominated the billfish catch this week, with blues to 400lbs and sails to 100lbs hooked up throughout the bay, with the blues taking artificials, and most of the sails biting live bait.

Daren Glosser of Doixon, CA, while fishing 5 days on a Leonero panga, took a blue marlin, a 70lb yellowfin tuna, and limits of dorado.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 2, 1999

Another week of mild weather, with air temp to near 90, cooler than normal water temp around 78 to 82deg, calm seas with light to moderate afternoon SE breezes. The excellent fishing continues, in spite of, or perhaps because of the erratic water temp, with many boats still limiting out and returning early, with the strongest bite further south - near Vinaramas. The dorado are as thick as we've ever seen, averaging 15lbs, taking lots of artificials, our fly fishermen are having a ball, taking lots of fish on bright colored flys, with live sardines and hoochies also working well. The strong yellowfin tuna bite continues, with lots of 10 to 25lb fish mixed in with the dorado close in, taking live sardinas, cedar plugs and hoochies. The great wahoo bite is still on, with lots of fish to 50lbs taken this week south of Los Frailes, taking rapalas and marauders. All species of billfish are actively biting, but most anglers this week concentrated on the wide open bite for dorado, tuna and wahoo. Lots of roosterfish averaging 15lbs and a number of yellowtail (rare for this time of year) were taken this week.

Ron and Mike Portz of Susanville, CA, while fishing 5 days on a Leonero cruiser, took 2 sailfish, 3 blue marlin, limits of dorado to 47lbs, limits of yellowfin, and 4 wahoo.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 25, 1999

Another week of great weather, with air temp to the low 90's, cooling water temp about 80 to 85deg, calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. The wide open bite continues, with most boats limiting out and returning early. You can almost walk on the dorado in the water, with big bulls to 60lbs in open water taking marlin lures, and huge schools of 10 to 20lb fish around the buoys and floating debris, taking hoochies and live sardinas. The strong yellowfin tuna bite continues, with fish up to 50lbs taken from 10 to 20 miles offshore under porpoise, with lots of 10 to 25lb fish mixed in with the dorado close in, taking live sardinas, rapalas and hoochies. The best wahoo bite we've ever seen continues (some boats averaging 5 per day), with lots of fish to 60lbs taken this week south of Los Frailes, taking rapalas and marauders. All species of billfish are actively biting, with marlin concentrated about 8 miles straight off Leonero, with the blues taking lures, and the stripers hitting live bait. Sailfish are everywhere, mostly taking flylined or slow trolled live bait.

Andrew Austin of Cookhouse, Republic of South Africa, while fishing 4 days on a Leonero cruiser, took a 420lb black marlin, a 300lb blue marlin, multiple striped marlin, and limits of dorado.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 18, 1999

Great weather all week, with air temp to the mid 90's, water temp about 85deg, calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. The wide open bite continues, with dorado, yellowfin, wahoo, sailfish, striped marlin and blue marlin all biting aggressively. Most boats are limiting out and returning early. There's as many dorado as we've ever seen, with owner John Ireland taking and releasing 20 fish in 1 hour, with fish from 12 to 35lbs located from the beach to 3 miles offshore, taking live sardinas, strip bait and hoochies. Yellowfin tuna are also wide open, with fish up to 181lbs taken from 10 to 20 miles offshore under porpoise, with lots of 10 to 35lb fish mixed in with the dorado close in, taking live sardinas, caballito, rapalas and cedar plugs. The wahoo bite continues, with lots of fish averaging 45lbs taken this week south of Los Frailes, taking rapalas and marauders. Blue marlin were very active north at the 88 Spot off Cerralvo Island, with sailfish mixed in with the dorado and tuna inside.

Ken Nankivell of Yucca Valley, CA, while fishing one day on a Leonero cruiser, took a 181lb yellowfin tuna (it took 5 hrs) and limits of dorado to 37lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 11, 1999

Tropical Storm Greg played havoc with the weather early in the week, but by week's end absolutely great conditions returned, with mild air temp near 90, water temp about 85deg, calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. The bite remains close in this week, with most fish taken near floating debris from the storm. The dorado bite is still wide open, with most boats limiting out early, with plenty of 10 to 25lb fish within 2 miles of the beach, taking live sardinas and hoochies. Yellowfin tuna are also wide open, with limits of football sized fish taking sardinas close in, with fish to 40lbs coming in at week's end. The wahoo bite continues, with a number of fish to 50lbs taken this week off Los Frailes, taking rapalas. Sailfish still dominate the billfishing action, with many hookups within a mile of the beach, taking flylined live bait and some on trolled lures. Lots of blue marlin and stripers sighted in the bay, but still a bit shy.

Bob Watson & family of San Diego, CA, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero cruiser, took 1 striped marlin, 2 sailfish and limits of dorado.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 4, 1999

Another week of relatively mild weather for midsummer, with air temp to the low 90's, water temp about 85deg, very calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. The bite remains close in this week, with most fish taken within 5 miles of shore. The dorado bite is still ON, with plenty of fish to 60lbs within 2 miles of the beach, taking live sardinas and hoochies, with the bigger fish taking marlin lures. Yellowfin tuna are still close in, with our kayak fishermen taking fish to 35 lbs, and larger fish from 100-150lbs taking live bait and marlin lures further offshore. The wahoo bite has improved, with a number of fish to 55lbs taken this week off Los Frailes, taking rapalas. Sailfish dominated the billfishing action, with most hookups on fly lined live bait and some on trolled lures. Lots of blue marlin sighted in the bay. The roosterfish bite continues to produce fish to 50lbs, mostly from Leonero to La Ribera, taking mostly slow trolled live bait.

Leo Roucher & family of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, while fishing on a Leonero cruiser for 5 days, took 2 blue marlin to 400lbs, 5 tuna to 140lbs, and lots of dorado to 60lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 28, 1999

An early week storm brought enough much-needed rain to cause the La Ribera arroyo to run out to sea. It shut down fishing for a couple of days, but since then the debris washed out has made for some spectacular dorado action. Midsummer weather has resumed, with air temp to the low 90's, water temp 85-88deg, very calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Again this week green water outside has kept the bite close in this week, with most fish taken within 5 miles of shore. The billfish bite was off this week, partly due to the fact that dorado are literally jumping into the boats, with many boats landing 20+ dorado to 35 lbs, hitting hoochies, sardinas and strip bait. Yellowfin tuna are still off La Ribera, with lots of mostly football sized fish hitting hoochies. The roosterfish bite continues to produce fish to 50lbs, mostly from Leonero to La Ribera, taking mostly slow trolled live bait. At week's end several wahoo to 50lbs were taken on rapalas.

Epideio Carillo of Chular, CA, took a 50lb wahoo while fishing on a Leonero cruiser Saturday.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 21, 1999

Another great week with midsummer air temp to the mid 90's, water temp 85-88deg, very calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Green water outside has kept the bite close in this week, with most fish taken within 5 miles of shore. Big striped marlin were taken this week at Leonero, including a 264lb and a 210lb striper. Lots of blue marlin averaging from 200 to 350lbs and some sailfish to 100lbs are spread throughout the bay, taking trolled tuna and bleeding mackerel patterned lures. Large schools of 10 to 20lb dorado are located under all structures, taking strip bait and hoochies, with many boats limiting out early - our fly fishermen are all smiles. Boiling yellowfin tuna off La Ribera produced heavy action all week of mostly football sized fish. Our kayak fishermen took a number of 30 to 40lb tuna closer in to shore, with most of the fish taken on live sardinas. The roosterfish bite continues to produce 40 to 70lb fish, from La Ribera to south of the lighthouse, taking mostly slow trolled live bait. Smaller roosters and jack crevalle to 30lbs were taken off the Leonero dock.

Cooke Bausman III of Tampa, FL, while fishing 7 days on a cruiser (targeting marlin), took 2 stripers and 8 blue marlin, releasing all of them healthy (thanks Cooke).

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 14, 1999

Continued nice conditions all week with midsummer air temp to the mid 90's, warming water temp 84-86deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Outstanding fishing this week with blue marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado, pargo, wahoo and roosterfish all biting within 5 miles of the beach. Dorado are wide open, with fish averaging 12-45lbs under all structures. Kayak fishermen are limiting out right in front of the resort. Artificials, Krocodiles, live sardines, mackerel and strip bait all working well. Yellowfin are everywhere, with massive schools of 15 to 20lb fish spread throughout inside Palmas Bay, taking anything thrown at them. Blue marlin averaging 250 lbs, some stripers to 160lbs, and sails to 100lbs are in close, within 5 miles of the beach, taking slow trolled skipjack or tuna and darker colored marlin lures. Roosterfish from 15 to 65lbs are off all beaches, with the larger fish further south. Lots of pargo averaging 15lbs taking live caballitos and sardines - the kayak fishermen are having a field day.

Mike Allen of Huntington Beach, CA, while fishing 5 days on a kayak took a 50lb yellowfin tuna, 35 dorado and limits of skipjack, pargo and amberjack.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 7, 1999

Continued nice conditions all week with cooler than normal air temp near 90, water temp near 80deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and roosterfish are still very active in the bay. Tuna action has been steady all week, with fish up to 25lbs found throughout the bay close in, with BIG gorillas to 150lbs found under porpoise about 20-25 miles straight out, taking live sardines, mackerel and bright colored hoochies. Blue marlin from 200 to 250 lbs and sails to 100lbs are all over, taking live mackerel and all colored marlin lures. Dorado to 60lbs on all structures, also biting close inshore, taking live sardines and hoochies. Big roosterfish, averaging 40lbs with some up to 70lbs are close to the beach, taking live mullet, mackerel and caballito.

Barbara Young of Corpus Christi, TX, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero panga took a 6 5lb roosterfish, her first.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 31, 1999

Nice conditions all week with cooler than normal air temp near 90, water temp near 80deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. This week started a little slower, but really picked up at mid week. Blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and roosterfish are all very active in the bay, and are close in. Tuna action has been steady all week, with the bite really picking up the last couple of days, with fish up to 75lbs found throughout the bay from 2 to 6 miles out, taking live sardines, mackerel and bright colored hoochies. Blue marlin averaging 200lbs and sails are in the same area, taking live mackerel and slow trolled live yellowfin tuna. Lots of dorado (more than we've seen in years) on all structures, also biting close inshore, taking live sardines and hoochies. Big roosterfish, averaging 40lbs with some up to 80lbs are really thick in the Los Frailes area, close to the beach, taking live mullet, mackerel and caballito with very light fishing pressure.

Ken Mushinski & Mary Ellen Houch of San Diego, CA, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero super panga took 5 roosterfish averaging 40lbs, and a 200lb blue marlin.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 24, 1999

Nice conditions all week with air temp near 90, water temp near 80deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Lots of blue marlin from 200 to 300lbs everywhere, taking mostly lures. Sailfish from 70 to 110lbs also everywhere, hitting live bait. Dorado to 50lbs were taken around any floating debris, taking hoochies, tuna feathers and live or strip bait. Yellowfin tuna to 50lbs were found with porpoise between the lighthouse and Los Frailes from 15 to 20 miles offshore, taking live bait and squid patterned lures, with numerous football sized fish working inside taking flylining sardinas or trolling hoochies. Wahoo to 60lbs were taken all week, hitting marlin lures and dark colored rapalas. Lots of roosterfish up to 60lbs were taking slow trolled or flylined live bait near the lighthouse within 100 yards of the beach. Reef fishing was still producing amberjack to 50lbs, and pargo & grouper to 80lbs.

7 yr old Andrew Barnes-Webb (son of manager Gary) landed a 90lb sailfish, tuna, dorado, and triggers while fishing with his dad 1 day on a Leonero cruiser.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 17, 1999

Nice conditions all week with air temp in the mid 90's, water temp near 80deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Again the week started slowly but improved each day, with lots of blue marlin to 250lbs taking lures and live bait, with sailfish hitting live bait. Striped marlin have started to move out of the area with the arrival of the blues and warming water. Dorado to 50lbs were taken around any floating debris, taking hoochies, tuna feathers and live or strip bait. Yellowfin tuna to 50lbs were found with porpoise between the lighthouse and Los Frailes from 15 to 20 miles offshore, taking live bait and squid patterned lures, with numerous football sized fish in the same area taking flylining sardinas or trolling hoochies, with tuna also reported boiling north off Cerralvo Island. Wahoo to 80lbs were taken at midweek, hitting marlin lures and dark colored rapalas. Lots of roosterfish up to 70-80lbs were taking slow trolled or flylined live bait near the lighthouse within 100 yards of the beach. Reef fishing was still producing amberjack to 45lbs, and pargo & cabrilla to 40lbs.

Peter & Vicky Ahluwalia of the Channel Islands (Great Britain) while fly fishing for several days on Leonero super pangas, took 3 sailfish, 1 rooster, 4 tuna, 5 pompano, and numerous dorado to 30lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 10, 1999

Nice conditions most of the week with air temp near 90, cooler water temp from 75 to 80deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Striped marlin to 180lbs, sailfish to 100lbs and blue marlin to 276lbs were taken in all areas from 4 to 15 miles offshore. Most stripers were found tailing or jumping and took mostly slow trolled live bait, while the sails and blues hit trolled lures - black/purple and yellow/red working best. Dorado to 50lbs were taken from the La Rivera shark buoys on lures and strip bait. Yellowfin tuna to 50lbs were found with porpoise between the lighthouse and Los Frailes from 15 to 20 miles offshore, taking live bait and squid patterned lures, with numerous football sized fish in the same area taking flylining sardinas or trolling hoochies, with tuna also reported boiling north off Cerralvo Island. Roosterfish up to 70-80lbs were taking slow trolled or flylined live bait near the lighthouse within 100 yards of the beach. Reef fishing was producing amberjack to 45lbs, and pargo & cabrilla to 40lbs.

Brett DeLong of Lemon Grove, CA, while fishing on a Leonero panga, took a 276lb blue marlin and a 30lb roosterfish.

Striped marlin to 200lbs, sailfish to 125lbs and blue marlin to 280lbs were taken in all areas from 4 to 15 miles offshore. Most stripers were found tailing or jumping and took mostly slow trolled live bait, while the sails and blues hit trolled lures - black/purple working best. Dorado to 45lbs were taken from La Rivera to Punta Colorada close inshore on lures and strip bait. Yellowfin tuna to 85lbs were found with porpoise between Punta Colorada and Cabo Pulmo from 15 to 20 miles offshore, taking live bait and squid patterned lures, with numerous football sized fish in the same area taking flylining sardinas or trolling hoochies. Roosterfish to 50lbs were taking slow trolled or flylined live bait near the lighthouse within 100 yards of the beach. Reef fishing was producing amberjack to 45lbs, and pargo & cabrilla to 35lbs.

14yr old Elliot Kerbis took an 85lb yellowfin tuna, and Mark Herbert of London, England while fishing one day on a Leonero super panga took a 42lb amberjack, a 45lb roosterfish and a 15lb cabrilla.

Striped marlin to 185lbs, sailfish to 110lbs and blue marlin to 330lbs were taken from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo from 1 to 12 miles offshore. Most stripers and sails were found tailing or jumping and took mostly slow trolled live bait, while the blues hit trolled lures - black/purple working best. Dorado to 52lbs were taken from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo from 1 to 15 miles offshore on trolled bait and squid patterned lures. Yellowfin tuna to 75lbs were found with porpoise between Punta Colorada and Cabo Pulmo from 4 to 14 miles offshore, taking live bait and squid patterned lures, with numerous football sized fish in the same area taking flylining sardinas or trolling hoochies. Roosterfish to 58lbs were taking slow trolled or flylined live bait from Leonero to Las Baracas within 100 yards of the beach. Wahoo to 42lbs were landed while trolling marlin lures between the lighthouse and Cabo Pulmo, with black/purple working best. Reef fishing was producing amberjack to 38lbs, yellowtail to 18lbs, pargo & cabrilla to 46lbs.

Terry & Christine O'Neill of Sutter Creek, CA, while fishing 3 days on a Leonero cruiser and 1 day on a super panga, took 5 striped marlin to 182lbs, 1 blue marlin 312lbs, 15 yellowfin tuna to 25lbs, and numerous cabrilla and pompano to 10lbs.

Great conditions and fishing all week with air temp in the mid 90's, water temp 78 to 82deg, mostly calm seas with light afternoon SE breezes. Striped marlin to 187lbs, sailfish to 120lbs and blue marlin to 220lbs were taken from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo from 2 to 5 miles offshore. Most stripers and sails were found tailing or jumping and took flylined or slow trolled live bait. All the blues and some of the stripers hit trolled lures - black/purple, orange/yellow and dorado patterns working best. Dorado to 50lbs were wide open at week's end 15 miles off the lighthouse around floating debris. Many boats limited out using flylined live bait, with fish averaging 20lbs and many over 45lbs. Yellowfin tuna to 325lbs were caught by area boats fishing north with weighted live bait, with football sized fish found with porpoise between Las Baracas and Cabo Pulmo, taking tuna feathers and hootchies. Reef fishing was producing amberjack to 46lbs, yellowtail to 30lbs, pargo & cabrilla to 15lbs. Roosterfish to 55lbs were taken slow trolling live bait from Leonero to Las Baracas. This weekend saw several marlin jumping within 1/2 mile of shore in front of the rersort.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 12, 1999

Beautiful weather all week with daytime highs in the low 90's and morning lows about 70. Water temp 80 to 82 deg., with calm seas and light afternoon breezes. Striped marlin continue to dominate the action with hundreds of tailers and jumpers found at the "88" spot off Cerralvo Island. Fish up to 207lbs were hitting slow trolled and flylined live bait, with lure action on green/black, yellow/red, and pink/black patterns. Additionally, stripers are being sighted and caught in increasing numbers from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo within 2 miles of shore. Sailfish to 110lbs have moved in with the warming water and were found with the stripers this week. Most fish were taken on live bait, but several were caught by flyfishermen on artificials. Dorado action remains constant around the bouys and open water, with fish to 45lbs taking some lures, but chumming with sardines working the best. Wahoo to 36lbs were landed this week while trolling mackerel patterned lures and rapalas between Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes. Yellowtail, amberjack, pargo, and cabrilla were taken on the reefs from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo. Yoyoing chrome jigs, and flylined or weighted live bait working best. Inshore fishing for sierra and roosterfish from La Ribera to the lighthouse was producing for the few anglers targeting these species.

Norman Lucia of Colorado Springs, CO, took a 136lb striped marlin on a fly rod this week at Leonero.

Another great week of perfect weather at the East Cape. Daytime highs from 85 to 90 with morning lows in the low 70's. Water temp 78 to 82 deg. Perfect warming water temp with lots of bait throughout the bay continues the ideal fishing conditions. Striped marlin, dorado, roosterfish, yellowtail and jacks are all being taken. Roosterfish to 57lbs are hitting live mackerel and large Krocodiles in all inshore areas, with anglers targeting roosters catching fewer fish than last week, but much larger. Striped marlin are tailing everywhere, with a large concentration of fish at the "88" Spot, off Cerralvo Island. Lots of bait are holding the fish in the area, with it not unusual to see more than a 100 in a day. Very picky biters right now, but most boats a getting at least 1 fish per day almost exclusively live mackerel or mullet. Dorado to 50 lbs were active throughout the bay, with most boats picking up 1 or 2 fish averaging 15lbs, mostly near floating debris, taking all colored lures, live sardines and mackerel. Inshore fishing for jacks, yellowtail and pargo remains strong, with 22 yellowtail taken this last week, with the best results on chrome lures and live sardines and mullet.

Another great week of perfect weather at the East Cape. Daytime highs from 85 to 90 with morning lows near 70. Water temp 77 to 80 deg. outside, 74 to 77 inside. Perfect water temp and conditions with lots of bait throughout the bay has made for ideal fishing. Striped marlin, blue marlin, dorado, roosterfish, and jacks are all being taken. Roosterfish to 50lbs are concentrated around the lighthouse, and are also hitting live mackerel and large Krocodiles in all inshore areas, with anglers targeting roosters averaging numerous fish per boat. Jack cravelle from 5 to 15lbs are everywhere, taking anything! Striped marlin are tailing everywhere, with it not unusual to see more than a 100 in a day. Very picky biters right now, but most boats a getting at least 1 fish per day on darker colored trolled lures or live mackerel. Dorado to 50 lbs were active throughout the bay, with most boats taking an average of 2 per day from 30 to 57lbs, mostly on darker colored marlin lures. Blue marlin are back, with 2 fish to 300lbs taken on Saturday.

Striped marlin continue to dominate the scene, with fish to 220 lbs found tailing in large numbers from the 88 Spot off Cerralvo Island to Los Frailes between 5 to 15 miles offshore, with numerous multiple hookups on live bait, squid and dorado patterned lures. Dorado to 50 lbs were active from the 88 Spot to the bouys off La Ribera, taking slow trolled or drifted live bait and bright colored lures. The yellowfin tuna bite was remains slow, with football sized fish found with porpoise from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait, hoochies, and cedar plugs. Inshore fishing for amberjack, roosterfish and skipjack remains hot this week with fish to 45 lbs found from Leonero to the lighthouse, feeding on schools of sardinas and other baitfish, with slow trolled or drifted live bait or krocodiles working best. Kayak fishermen were continuing to take some nice pargo and cabrilla near shore.

Dorado to 50 lbs were active from the 88 Spot to the buoys off La Ribera, averaging 1 to 2 fish per boat, taking slow trolled or drifted live bait and bright colored lures. The yellowfin tuna bite was remains slow, with football sized fish found with porpoise from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait, hoochies, cedar plugs and trolled tuna feathers. Inshore fishing for amberjack, roosterfish and skipjack remains hot this week with fish to 45 lbs found from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking slow trolled or drifted live and cut bait. Kayak fishermen were nailing pargo and cabrilla near shore.

Perfect weather all week with warming water temp were the ticket for improved fishing. Daytime highs from 85 to 90 with morning lows about 65. Water temp 72 to 75 deg. Striped marlin continue to dominate the scene, with fish to 180 lbs found tailing from Cerralvo Island to the Gordo Banks between 5 to 15 miles offshore, with numerous multiple hookups on live bait and bright colored lures. The big news was the arrival of large schools of dorado up to 55 lbs, active from the 88 spot off Cerralvo to the buoys off La Ribera, feeding on squid, mackerel and sardinas, with many fish exceeding 40 lbs. The yellowfin tuna bite was remains slow, with football sized fish found with porpoise from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait, hoochies, cedar plugs and trolled tuna feathers. Inshore fishing for amberjack, roosterfish and pargo greatly improved this week with fish to 40 lbs taking slow trolled or drifted live and cut bait. 1 swordfish and numerous wahoo to 90lbs were taken by East Cape anglers fishing north this week.

Mike, Lenore & Joe Dillon of Palm Springs, CA while fishing 1 day on the Leonero cruiser Lunasea, caught and released 4 striped marlin to 180 lbs in 3 hours.

Perfect weather the first half of the week, with windy conditions hampering fishing over the weekend. Daytime highs from 85 to 90 and morning lows about 65. Water temp 70 to 72 deg. The bite was a bit slow this week, mostly due to the still-cooler than normal water temp, and an incredible amount of squid in the water. Striped marlin to 130 lbs have moved south, and were found from Cabo Pulmo to Gordo Banks between 10 to 20 miles offshore, taking live bait and squid pattern lures. The yellowfin tuna bite was off, with football sized fish taking hoochies and trolled tuna feathers. Dorado to 25lbs were found in open water and around the buoys off La Ribera, although the dorado bite was slow - live bait, squid & all colored lures all working well. Amberjack and wahoo were taken within a mile of shore this week, with good inshore fishing for pargo, pompano & jacks.

William Parrette and Greg Gaches of Milpitas, CA, while fishing 2 days on a Leonero cruiser, took 2 striped marlin to 120lbs, and two 25lb dorado.

Perfect weather all week, with daytime highs from 85 to 90 and morning lows about 60. Water temp 70 to 72 deg, flat, calm seas with light afternoon breezes. Continued nice fishing conditions although the bite was a bit slow this week. Striped marlin continue to dominate the catch, with fish to 130lbs taken from Punta Colorada to Cabo Pulmo from 10 to 20 miles offshore, averaging 1 to 2 stripers per boat for most days. Live bait and pink, yellow/orange patterned trolling lures worked best this week. Yellowfin tuna to 30lbs were located with porpoise 10 to 15 miles off Cabo Pulmo and provided easy limits for several of our anglers this week, with cedar plugs, live bait & hoochies the best bet. Dorado to 35lbs were found in open water and around the buoys off La Ribera, although the dorado bite was a bit off this week - live bait, squid & all colored lures all produced fish this week. Several sailfish to 120lbs were caught and released indicating warmer water is on the way.

Linda and Dennis Kubezak of Ogdensburg, WI, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero cruiser, took a 102lb swordfish and a 30lb yellowfin tuna.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 17, 1999

Beautiful weather most of the week, with daytime highs in the mid 80's, with morning lows about 60. Water temp 70 to 72 deg, with light afternoon breezes. Nice fishing conditions with improved action after last week's north winds. Striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado, wahoo, pargo and a swordfish were all taken here this week. Striped marlin to 180lbs were active from 10 to 25 miles southeast of Leonero. Several large schools of tailers provided multiple hookups for numerous boats, with live bait, green/black & pink trolled lures working best. Yellowfin tuna to 45lbs were located with porpoise by several of our boats this week. Easy limits of 10 to 30lb fish were taken by several anglers, with cedar plugs, live bait & hoochies the best bet. Dorado to 25lbs were taken in open water while trolling. Action remains a bit slow, but warming water should improve the bite soon - bright colored lures, live bait & hoochies all produced fish this week. Wahoo action has been moderate, however several nice fish shredded trolled lures, with orange/purple marauders and all colored marlin lures getting bit.

Three generations of the Bellissimo family, Tom Sr., Tom & Max of Santa Clarita, CA, while fishing 3 days on a Leonero cruiser took 10 tuna to 45lbs, 2 wahoo to 35lbs, and a 150lb (estimated) swordfish.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 10, 1999

Cooler than normal water (67 - 71 deg) for this time of year continues with daytime highs in the low 80's with cool nights in the 50's. The first half of the week the marlin, tuna & dorado bite continued to be very good. However, north winds and late winter weather prevailed towards week's end. Swordfish continue to be spotted and taken in the East Cape. The striped marlin bite continued to be very consistent the first part of the week with most fish being found from 10 to 15 miles off Punta Arena. Most boats taking at least one a day, with quite a few taking dark colored lures, as well as live mackerel. Large schools of yellowfin tuna from 5 to 25 lbs were found from Punta Arena south 10 to 30 miles offshore, taking cedar plugs, bright feathers & live mackerel. Swordfish were spotted closer in this week, from 2 to 5 miles out. The pargo are really bunching up close to shore, with all rocky areas producing. Live mackerel and casted Krocodiles working best.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 3, 1999

Cooler than normal water (65 - 70 deg) for this time of year has not hurt the fishing. Beautiful springtime weather with daytime highs in the low 80's with cool nights in the 50's. The striped marlin bite continues to be very consistent with almost all boats taking at least one a day. The tuna bite is also on, with yellowfin coming in daily. Two swordfish were taken at Leonero this week. The striped marlin were found tailing in the southern half of Palmas Bay this week from 8 to 20 miles offshore, from the lighthouse to Los Frailes. Some were taking dark colored lures, but most were on live bait, flylined or slow trolled. Large schools of yellowfin were found way outside, from 10 to 30 miles out with fish averaging 20 lbs with a few up to 120lbs. The larger fish were taking live mackerel, with cedar plugs working well. The pargo bite is wide open with lots of fish to 35lbs taken inside this week. Live mackerel and casted Krocodiles working best.

Nice weather most of the week with daytime air temp near 80, cooling to the mid 50's at night, water temp about 68deg inside to 70deg outside. Striped marlin to 140lbs moved south and were found tailing between Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes about 8 to 10 miles out. Most fish hit flylined or slow trolled live mackerel. The yellowfin tuna bite continues, with fish up to 85lbs taken this week, with the larger fish found with porpoise 15 to 20 miles off Los Frailes and the smaller fish in the same area but closer inshore, with all the tuna hitting cedar plugs, live bait and dark colored tuna feathers. Dorado to 35lbs were found between Leonero and Los Frailes, mainly solo or in pairs, taking trolled lures in open water. Pargo, snapper and grouper to 50lbs were taken on weighted live mackerel in 200ft of water on a reef off Punta Colorada.

Striped marlin to 140lbs have moved north towards Punta Pescadero taking live bait and mackerel or squid colored trolled lures. Many boats reporting multiple hookups. Dorado to 45lbs remain active from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking marlin lures outside with plenty of school-sized fish taking live mackerel, squid, and sardinas around the shark buoys. Pargo to 15lbs and amberjack to 35lbs are showing up from Leonero to the Las Baracas, inshore over reefs, taking live bait, cut bait, Krocodiles and small jigs.

Tailing striped marlin to 130lbs remain in close throughout Palmas Bay from 2 to 6 miles out taking live bait and mackerel or squid colored trolled lures. Most boats reporting multiple hookups. Dorado to 45lbs remain active from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking marlin lures outside with plenty of school-sized fish taking live mackerel, squid, and sardinas around the shark buoys. Pargo to 15lbs are showing up from Leonero to the Las Baracas, over reefs, dropoffs, and ledges, taking live bait, cut bait, Krocodiles and small jigs.

Another week of great weather made for continued great fishing this week. Daytime air temp near 80, cooling to the mid 50's at night, water temp about 69deg. Huge schools of squid inshore are keeping the gamefish in the bay. Hotel Palmas landed a 1085lb blue marlin early in the week. The yellowfin tuna bite is wide open, with large schools of 10 to 25lb fish - up to 50lbs straight out in front of Leonero, taking live mackerel, trolled bright colored feathers and cedar plugs. Tailing striped marlin remain in close throughout Palmas Bay taking live mackerel and squid colored trolled lures. Dorado to 45lbs are taking marlin lures outside with plenty of school-sized fish taking live mackerel, squid, and sardinas around the shark buoys. Wahoo from 30 to 60lbs are south of Los Frailes, close to shore - nearly 1/2 the boats are getting hooked up on slow trolled live mackerel. Amberjack and roosterfish continue to be very active from Leonero to the lighthouse. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks was also producing lots of sierra and some pargo.

Walt Phornton of Whittier, CA fished 2 days on a cruiser, taking 20 yellowfin to 42lbs, and released 3 striped marlin.

Flat mornings with light afternoon breezes made for some great conditions this week. Daytime air temp near 80, cooling to the mid 50's at night, water temp about 68deg. Lots of tailing striped marlin throughout Palmas Bay provided most of the action this week - on Saturday 4 Leonero boats took 10 stripers, mostly on live bait, from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo, from 3 to 5 miles out. Wahoo are back - nearly 1 in 3 boats are hooking up on dark colored marlin lures, mostly from the lighthouse to Los Frailes. Amberjack and roosterfish are very active from Leonero to the lighthouse. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks was also producing lots of sierra and some pargo.

The north winds finally let up this week and allowed us several days of great weather at week's end. Daytime air temp in the upper 70's, cooling to the mid 50's at night, water temp about 70deg. The big news this week is the return of a wide-open yellowfin tuna bite. Multiple schools of 10 to 25lb tuna are lurking between Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes, taking squid, live bait, hoochies and tuna feathers. Still lots of tailing striped marlin, although this week the bite was a bit off. The local commercial fleet still reports lots of yellowtail off La Ribera. Some dorado were taken off the shark buoys off La Ribera. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks was producing cabrilla, pargo and sierra.

Another week of mostly north wind conditions which continue to shut down most of the fishing at the East Cape. Daytime air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to the 50's at night, water temp about 71deg. The few East Cape boats that went out this week reported slow fishing, however, at week's end the local commercial fleet reported lots of yellowtail, jack crevalle and sierra converging off La Ribera. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks was again shut down due to the wind-driven shore break.

This week was pretty much a carbon copy of last week, with five days of north wind shutting down most of the fishing at the East Cape. Daytime air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to the 50's at night, water temp about 71deg. Leonero again had no boats out this week, our report is based on a few local boats that went out on the two calm days during midweek. Most of the action was again confined to a few dorado, but lots of striped marlin. Most fish were taken on lures as bait was scarce. Commercial boats are continuing to report good yellowtail catches. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks was shut down due to the wind-driven shore break.

Leonero had no boats out this week, our report is based on a few local boats that ventured out. Most of the action was again confined to a few dorado, but lots of striped marlin. Most fish were taken on lures. Commercial boats are reporting good yellowtail catches. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks was shut down due to the wind-driven shore break.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: January 23, 1999

Nearly a carbon copy of last week, with continued nice weather, calm morning conditions prevailing most of the week, with some afternoon winds. Daytime air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to the 50's at night, water temp about 72deg. Only a few boats ventured forth this week as this continues to be the slow time of the year for fishermen here despite the nice conditions. Most of the action this week was again confined to a few dorado, but lots of striped marlin, with most boats hooking up billfish. Dorado from 15 to 30 lbs were taken outside, with most of the fish taking live bait around the buoys and floating debris. Striped marlin to 150 lbs continued to be active from 2 to 15 miles offshore, taking mostly live bait. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks continued to bring in lots of sierra in the early hours - trolled small lures best.

Another week of great weather, with calm morning conditions prevailing most of the week, with some afternoon winds. Daytime air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to the 50's at night, water temp about 74deg. Fishing pressure was again light this week, with only a few boats fishing despite the good weather. Most of the action this week was confined to a few dorado, but lots of striped marlin, with most all boats hooking up billfish. Dorado from 15 to 30 lbs were taken outside, from 5 to 12 miles out, with most of the fish taking live bait around the buoys and floating debris. Striped marlin to 170 lbs continued to be active from 2 to 15 miles offshore, taking mostly live bait. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks continued to bring in lots of sierra in the early hours - trolled hoochies, bait and casted Krocodiles best.

Fishing pressure was again light this week, with few boats fishing despite the good weather. Most of the action this week was confined to dorado, striped marlin and sierra. Dorado from 15 to 40 lbs were taken outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, with the larger fish taking trolled lures of all colors, and the smaller fish taking live bait around the buoys and floating debris. Striped marlin to 160 lbs were again active from 3 to 12 miles offshore, taking mostly live bait. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks resulted in lots of sierra to 8 lbs taken in the early hours - trolled hoochies, bait and casted Krocodiles best.

Great weather for the new year, with north winds at the beginning of the week, changing to calm conditions by mid week. Daytime air temp in the mid 70's, cooling to the 50's at night, water temp about 75deg. Fishing pressure was light this week, with most boats going out being rewarded with limits of dorado in the 20 to 40 lb range. Most fish were taken outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, with the larger fish taking trolled lures of all colors, and the smaller fish taking live bait around the buoys and floating debris. Striped marlin to 150 lbs were also active from 5 to 15 miles offshore, taking mostly live bait. Several wahoo were also taken - all on trolled lures. Inshore fishing from shore, pangas, and kayaks remains consistent for pargo, jacks & sierra - bait and casted Krocodiles best.
