Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 25, 2000

Late November conditions, with daytime highs about 75, evening lows in the lower 60's, breezy days with water temp in the upper 70's. Good fishing continues for those hardy enough to brave the bumpy seas. The dorado bite remains strong, with plenty of fish averaging 15-20lbs off La Ribera, taking hoochies and lures. The tuna bite continues on, with limits of fish from 15-30lbs spread throughout the bay, with hoochies and slow trolling live sardinas working best. Sailfish were biting freely about 5 miles straight off Leonero, hitting mostly green/white and blue/white trolled lures. Lots of sierra taken just off the beaches, with the fish aggressively biting small blue/silver rapalas.

Tom Lupo (member of the "Let's Talk Hookup" team) of Tustin, CA, while superpanga fishing for 1 day, took a 268lb blue marlin, his first in over 20 years.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 18, 2000

Late November conditions, with daytime highs about 75, evening lows in the lower 60's, breezy days with water temp in the upper 70's. Good fishing for those hardy enough to brave the bumpy seas. The strong dorado bite continues, with plenty of fish averaging 15lbs south off Cabo Pulmo, while larger fish from 30-45lbs were found off La Ribera, taking live sardinas, hoochies and marlin lures. The tuna bite continues on, with limits of football-sized fish spread throughout the bay, with hoochies and slow trolling live sardinas working best. Sailfish and striped marlin were taken off La Ribera, hitting mostly green/white and blue/white trolled lures. Lots of sierra taken just off the beaches, with the fish aggressively biting small blue/silver rapalas.

Chris Hulley of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, while cruiser fishing for 3 days, took limits of tuna to 40lbs, dorado to 45lbs, sierra, and an 80lb sail.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 11, 2000

Mild weather prevails, with daytime highs about 80, evening lows in the mid 60's, breezy afternoons with cooling water temp in the upper 70's. Good fishing continues, despite fewer boats going out. On Saturday, Leonero manager Gary released a blue marlin estimated at 350lbs, also taking dorado, tuna, bonito, and sierra. The strong dorado bite continues, with plenty of fish averaging 15lbs mixed in with the tuna off La Ribera, taking mostly live sardinas, while larger fish up to 50lbs were outside, taking lures while trolling for blue marlin. The tuna bite continues on, with fish spread throughout the bay, with slow trolling live sardinas working best. Lots of sailfish were taken from 1 to 8 miles offshore, exclusively taking live caballitos and big sardinas. Striped marlin have returned, with fish spread over a wide area, taking mostly trolled lures. A few blue marlin were also taken on small live tuna, or green/black or bleeding mackerel pattern trolled lures. Great inshore fishing continues with roosterfish, pargo, jacks and sierra biting aggressively, taking hoochies, bright colored Krocodiles and live sardinas.

Andre Farr of East London, South Africa, while cruiser fishing for 1 day, took a 300lb blue marlin, dorado to 30lbs, and limits of tuna.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 4, 2000

Winter weather has begun, with daytime highs about 80, evening lows in the mid 60's, breezy conditions with cooling water temp in the upper 70's. Despite the less than perfect weather, great fishing continues, with yellowfin tuna, dorado and sailfish dominating the action. Fly and light tackle inshore fishing remains wide open. The strong dorado bite continues, with some larger fish up to 50lbs under shark buoys off Punta Pescadero, while the schooling smaller dorado have moved south, near buoys or floating debris taking mostly live sardinas. The tuna bite continues on, with limits of schooling fish averaging 10lbs inside mixed in with skipjack, with some big tuna to 120lbs outside under porpoise, taking mostly live sardinas and cedar plugs. Lots of sailfish were taken in close, from 1 to 6 miles offshore (one even was hooked up from the beach at La Ribera), exclusively taking live caballitos and big sardinas. A few blue marlin were also taken on small live tuna, or green/black or bleeding mackerel pattern trolled lures. Great inshore fishing with roosterfish to 55lbs, pargo to 30lbs, jacks to 18lbs, and sierra were biting aggressively, taking hoochies and live sardinas.

Rick Novak of Portland, OR, while panga fishing for 2 days, took a sailfish, dorado to 40lbs, tuna to 120lbs, and roosterfish to 35lbs.

Great conditions continue, with daytime highs about 85, evening lows in the mid 60's, calm seas (2 windy days early in the week) with cooling water temp in the low 80's. Extraordinary fishing continues, with yellowfin tuna, big dorado, sailfish, striped and blue marlin dominating the action. Fly and light tackle inshore fishing remains wide open. The strong dorado bite continues, with schools of larger fish up to 55lbs under shark buoys or floating debris taking live sardinas and marlin lures. The tuna bite continues on, with easy limits of schooling fish averaging 10lbs (largest 35lbs) inside mixed in with skipjack, taking mostly live sardinas. Lots of sailfish were taken, from 1 to 6 miles offshore, exclusively taking live caballitos and big sardinas. The striped and blue marlin bite remains consistent, with fish taken daily on small live tuna, or green/black or bleeding mackerel pattern trolled lures. Lots of roosterfish and pargo to 30lbs, sierra and jacks were taken inshore, taking hoochies and live sardinas.

Mark Ross & Ron Humphries of Anglers Edge Tackle of Lakeside, CA, while fishing 1 day on a cruiser, took a 160lb sail, dorado to 45lbs, and limits of tuna.

Absolutely great conditions, with daytime highs about 85, evening lows near 70, calm seas with water temp around 84deg. Extraordinary fishing continues, with yellowfin tuna, big dorado, sailfish, and blue marlin dominating the action. Fly and light tackle inshore fishing remains wide open. Lots of sailfish were taken, from 1 to 6 miles offshore, including a 120lb sail from a kayak. The sails are coming up to lures, but are almost exclusively taking live caballitos and sardinas. The blue marlin bite has picked up, with fish from 250 to over 500lbs taking green/black or bleeding mackerel pattern trolled lures. The incredible tuna bite continues on, with easy limits of schooling fish averaging 15lbs within 5 miles of Leonero, and larger fish averaging 80-90lbs (a 294lb tuna was taken on Saturday) located outside under porpoise, taking mostly live sardinas and small jacks. The strong dorado bite continues, with schools of larger fish averaging 25lbs under floating debris taking live sardinas, with some larger fish to 60lbs outside taking marlin lures. Lots of roosterfish to 35lbs, sierra to 6lbs, pargo to 12lbs, and jacks to 20lbs were taken inshore, taking hoochies and live sardinas.

Dennis Spike of Coastal Kayak Fishing, from Reseda, CA, while fishing 2 days from a kayak, took and released a 120lb sail, and landed numerous tuna to 15lbs, pargo and sierra.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 14, 2000

Awesome conditions continue, with daytime highs about 90, evening lows near 70, calm seas with water temp around 84deg and cooling. Extraordinary fishing again this week, with yellowfin tuna, dorado, sailfish, striped marlin, blue & black marlin all biting aggressively. Fly and light tackle inshore fishing has been wide open this week. Lots of sailfish were taken, from 1 to 6 miles offshore; owner John Ireland took and released 3 sails in 2 1/2 hours this past Friday. The sails are coming up to lures, but are almost exclusively taking live caballitos and sardinas. The blue/black marlin bite has slowed a bit since last week, but our fleet is still catching a couple per day, with fish averaging 250lbs taking green/black or bleeding mackerel pattern trolled lures. The incredible tuna bite continues on, with 3 separate concentrations of fish within 5 miles of Leonero, with limits for all anglers averaging 15lbs, and larger fish to 74lbs outside under porpoise, taking mostly live sardinas and small jacks. The strong dorado bite continues, with schools of fish averaging 15 lbs under floating debris taking live sardinas, with some larger fish to 40lbs outside taking marlin lures. Lots of sierra and jacks were taken inshore, taking hoochies and live sardinas.

Bill Sharp and family, of San Diego, CA, while fishing 4 days on Leonero cruisers, took a blue marlin, 2 sailfish, 5 dorado, sierra, and limits of tuna.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 7, 2000

Awesome conditions continue, with daytime highs about 90, evening lows near 70, calm seas with water temp around 86deg. The incredible tuna bite continues on, with limits of fish from footballers to over 50lbs located off Los Bar riles, La Ribera, Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes, taking mostly live sardinas. The dorado bite remains unchanged, with schools of fish averaging 15-20 lbs spread all over the bay, with some larger fish to 40lbs outside mixed in with the billfish, taking live sardinas, cedar plugs and marlin lures. The billfish bite has gone ballistic, with blue marlin from 300 to 500lbs taken daily, and multiple sailfish hookups common (1 boat released 9 sails), with billfish located throughout the bay from 2 miles on out, with live bait and green/black trolled lures working best. The wahoo action continues, with fish averaging 30-40lbs (largest 60lbs) located within a mile of the beach, from Cabo Pulmo to Los Frailes, taking live bait, rapalas, and marauders. Lots of sierra and some pargo were taken inshore, with the sierra taking hoochies, while the pargo preferred live sardinas. The roosterfish bite has returned, with fish to 25lbs taking live sardinas and caballitos off area beaches from Leonero to the lighthouse.

PGA caddies Jimmy Johnson and Steve Kay, from Texas & North Carolina, while fishing 1 day on a panga and 1 day on a cruiser, took a 300lb and a 500lb blue marlin, daily limits of dorado, tuna to 50lbs, sailfish, roosters and amberjacks.

Nice conditions continue, with daytime highs in the low 90's, evening lows near 70, calm seas with water temp around 86deg. The awesome tuna bite continues on, with early limits of fish averaging 25-30lbs (with many fish taken over 50lbs) within 2 miles of shore at the same spot off La Ribera as well as off Cabo Pulmo, taking mostly live sardinas. The dorado bite remains unchanged, with schools of fish averaging 15-20 lbs spread all over the bay, with some larger fish to 45lbs outside mixed in with the billfish, taking live sardinas, cedar plugs and all colors of marlin lures. The billfish bite remains steady, with blue marlin to 375lbs and sailfish taken every day this week, located about 4-6 miles straight out, with live bait and green/black or purple/black trolled lures working best. At week's end a number of striped marlin were hooked up to the north, off Punta Pescadero. The steady pick for wahoo continues, with fish averaging 30-40lbs located within a mile of the beach, from Cabo Pulmo to Los Frailes, taking rapalas, marauders and dark colored trolled lures. Lots of sierra and some pargo were taken inshore, with the sierra taking hoochies, while the pargo preferred live sardinas.

Bruce Evans, of Durban, South Africa, while fishing 2 days on Leonero cruisers, took daily limits of dorado and tuna, a sailfish, wahoo, pargo and sierra.

Typical September conditions prevail, with daytime highs in the mid 90's, evening lows in the mid 70's, calm seas with water temp from 85 to 88deg. The best tuna bite ever continues on, with limits of fish averaging 35- 40lbs (with many fish taken over 50lbs) within 2 miles of shore at the same spot off La Ribera (sorry if this sounds like a broken record), taking mostly live sardinas. The dorado bite continues, with schools of fish averaging 15-20 lbs spread all over the bay, with some larger fish to 40lbs outside mixed in with the billfish, taking live sardinas, Krocodiles and green/black marlin lures. The sailfish bite remains hot, with a number of multiple hookups this week, with blue marlin to 375lbs also taken this week, located about 4-6 miles straight out, with green/black or purple/black trolled lures working best. The wahoo bite has been steady for several weeks now, with with fish averaging 30lbs taking rapalas, marauders and dark colored trolled lures. Lots of sierra inshore, taking live bait and hoochies.

Bill Klotz, of Wilomar, CA, while fishing 3 days on Leonero cruisers, took a 375lb blue marlin and daily limits of dorado and tuna.

The best tuna bite ever continues on, with limits of fish averaging 40lbs within 2 miles of shore, taking live sardinas, hoochies, and cedar plugs. The dorado bite continues, with schools of fish averaging 15-20 lbs spread all over the bay, with some larger fish to 40lbs outside mixed in with the billfish, taking mostly live sardinas and green/black marlin lures. The sailfish bite remains hot, with more blue marlin taken this week, located closer in, about 4 miles straight out, with green/black or purple/black trolled lures and live caballitos working best. The wahoo bite has been steady for a couple of weeks now, with rapalas, marauders and dark trolled lures working best.

Tom McAndrews, of Davis, CA, while fishing 5 days on Leonero cruisers, took a blue marlin and daily limits of dorado and tuna.

Typical September conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the mid 90's, evening lows in the mid 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and water temp from 86 to 88deg. The best tuna bite ever continues, with limits of fish throughout the bay, with smaller fish within a mile of shore (ave. 40lbs), with some giant tuna over 150lbs located outside, with fish taking live sardinas, hoochies, cedar plugs and marlin lures. The dorado bite continues, with limits of fish ave. 12lbs spread all over the bay, with some big bulls outside in the blue water to 60lbs, taking live sardinas and green/black marlin lures. The sailfish bite remains hot, with some blue marlin and stripers mixed in, located about 10 miles straight out, with green/black trolled lures and live caballitos working best. The inshore action for roosterfish, pargo and wahoo continues, with roosters and pargo taking live bait, while CD-18 Rapalas were the choice for wahoo.

King Archer, of Dana Point, CA, while fishing 2 days on a Leonero cruiser, took sails, 1 striped marlin, daily limits of dorado and tuna to 40lbs.

Continued typical summer conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the mid 90's, evening lows in the mid 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and water temp from 85 to 87deg. The strong dorado bite continues, with many boats releasing 30 or more fish per day, with large schools of fish located both inside and outside, with big bulls to 60lbs (ave. 15-30lbs) taking bright tuna feathers, marlin lures and live sardinas. The tuna bite continues, with limits for most boats, taking fish from 10 to 50lbs all in a concentrated area off La Ribera, with live sardinas and caballitos working best. Larger tuna to over 100lbs were taken off Punta Pescadero, using live bait near the shark buoys. The sailfish bite remains hot, with some blue marlin to 300lbs mixed in, located about 10 miles straight out, with green/black trolled lures and live caballitos working best. The inshore action for roosterfish, pargo and wahoo continues, with roosters from 15 to 70lbs, pargo to 30lbs, and wahoo to 70lbs taken daily.

Charlie Nichols, of Orange County, CA, while fishing 4 days on a Leonero cruiser, took 4 sails, 1 blue marlin, daily limits of dorado and tuna to 50lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 26, 2000

Continued typical summer conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the upper 90's, evening lows in the mid 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and hot water temp from 88 to 91deg. The big news this week is consistent blue water producing an incredible number of BIG bull dorado, with many fish from 40 to over 60lbs taken in open water, mostly on live sardinas, caballitos, and marlin lures. With most of the action close in this week, few boats are venturing outside, but those that did were rewarded with blue marlin to 300lbs, and a wide open sailfish bite, with many boats releasing 4 to 5 fish per day. The tuna bite continues, with limits for most boats, taking fish from 10 to 50lbs all in a concentrated area off Punta Colorada, with live sardinas and caballitos working best. The inshore action for roosterfish, pargo and pompano is hot, with roosters to 50lbs, pargo to 25lbs, and multiple strikes on pompano inshore from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking live mullet and sardinas.

Alex Szekely, of Tecate, Baja Cal. Norte, while fishing 3 days on a Leonero cruiser, took a wide variety of fish, including sails, dorado, tuna, roosterfish, pargo and pompano.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 19, 2000

Continued typical summer conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the upper 90's, evening lows in the mid 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and water temp near 90. The wide open tuna bite continues, with the 4th straight day of limits for all boats, with fish from 15 to 60lbs all taken in a concentrated area off La Ribera, with live sardinas and caballitos working best. With blue water having returned, the billfish bite is back, with lots of sailfish, some blue marlin and and occasional striped marlin located from 3 to 10 miles offshore, throughout the bay, taking mostly green/black trolled lures and live caballito. The dorado bite is here, with schools of smaller fish (average 10-12lbs) located inside, with some big bulls to 63lbs outside mixed in with the sails. The roosterfish bite continues with fish averaging 20lbs (largest 68lbs) with lots of fish in the 30 to 45lb range inshore from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking live mullet and sardinas.

John Wilson, of Cordova, AK, while fishing 2 days on a Leonero cruiser, released 2 sails and a striped marlin, and took dorado to 50lbs, roosters, pargo, tuna and jacks.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 12, 2000

Continued typical summer conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the upper 90's, evening lows in the mid 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and water temp near 90. With green water throughout the bay, the billfish bite was off most of the week, however on Saturday we found blue water about 3 miles off Punta Colorada, and the return of the billfish bite, with blues, lots of sails and some stripers, mostly on green/black trolled lures. The big bull dorado bite was off this week, however schools of smaller fish (average 10-12lbs) were providing lots of fun for our light tackle fishermen. Inshore fishing remains great with limits of yellowfin and roosterfish close in. Yellowfin tuna ranging from 15 to 60lbs remain concentrated 2 miles off La Ribera, as well as 2 miles off Cabo Pulmo, with most fish taking weighted live sardinas. The roosterfish bite continues with fish averaging 10 to 20lbs (largest 51lbs) inshore from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking live caballitos, lisas and sardinas. Big pargo to 30lbs also inside, taking live sardinas and caballitos.

Dirk Swierczynski of Solana Beach, CA, owner of Baja Directions (map company), while fishing one day on a cruiser, took an incredible 247lb yellowfin tuna, south of Los Frailes. The fish took a slow trolled live bait while fishing for blue marlin.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 5, 2000

Continued typical summer conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the upper 90's, evening lows in the low 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and water temp in the mid to upper 80's. The billfish bite was off most of the week, as warm green water prevailed, with cooler bluer water starting to return at week's end, along with the marlin. Inshore fishing remains strong with yellowfin and roosterfish providing limits of good sized fish. The Bisbee East Cape Tournament took fewer marlin than expected - only two fish over 300lbs. 1st place went to local Mark Rayor with a 460lb black, while a 382lb black marlin took 2nd place (both fish taken on live tuna). A 157lb yellowfin and a 49lb dorado won their respective divisions. Over $200,000 in prize money was distributed among the four winners. Yellowfin tuna ranging from 6 to 60lbs remain concentrated 2 miles off La Ribera, with as many as you want taking cedar plugs, hoochies and live sardinas. The roosterfish bite continues with fish averaging 15 to 20lbs (largest 62lbs) inshore from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking live caballitos, lisas and sardinas.

Leonero manager Gary Barnes-Webb, while fishing one day on his boat "La Reina Africana", took a 97lb swordfish, a 41lb bull dorado, and released a 250lb blue marlin.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 29, 2000

Continued nice conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the upper 90's, evening lows in the low 70's, calm seas with afternoon breezes and water temp in the mid 80's. The billfish bite was slow at the beginning of the week, then picked up on Wed. with 3 blues over 300lbs taken by Leonero G.M. Gary, who also lost a fish estimated to be over 800lbs, and took another 300lb blue on Thursday. A 500lb blue was taken on Friday, and Saturday a 820lb black marlin was taken 2 miles off Rancho Leonero by a Palmas boat after a 10 hour fight - the fish was finally landed within a mile of Leonero, in full sight of our guests having dinner. Yellowfin tuna averaging 15lbs are concentrated 2 miles off La Ribera, with as many as you want taking cedar plugs, hoochies and live sardinas. Bigger tuna from 60 to 110lbs are outside, taking trolled marlin lures. The dorado bite was a bit erratic, with one day great, the next so-so. Big bulls nearly all over 50lbs cruising outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, mostly on marlin lures. Lots of smaller dorado averaging 15lbs are in close from Punta Colorada to Cabo Pulmo, taking mostly live sardinas and tuna feathers. The roosterfish bite continues with fish up to 30lbs inshore throughout the bay from Punta Pescadero to Punta Colorado, taking live caballitos, grunts and sardinas.

John Schachtnar of Newport Beach, CA, while fishing on the Palmas boat "Billfisher", took a 820lb black marlin on 60lb test, using a live bonita after a 10 hour fight.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 22, 2000

Continued nice conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the mid 90's, evening lows in the low 70's, calm seas, afternoon breezes and water temp in the low 80's. A bright full moon slowed the incredible marlin bite we've experienced the last several weeks, however, tuna, dorado, sailfish and roosters continue to feed aggressively. Yellowfin tuna averaging 15lbs are concentrated just off Punta Arena, with as many as you want taking cedar plugs, hoochies and live sardinas. Bigger tuna from 100 to over 200lbs are outside, taking trolled marlin lures. The dorado bite continues, with big bulls nearly all over 50lbs cruising outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, mostly on live sardinas, mackerel and all patterns of marlin lures. Limits of schooling dorado averaging 15lbs are in close from Punta Colorada to Cabo Pulmo, taking mostly live sardinas. The sailfish bite continues, with fish spread throughout the bay, mostly taking trolled marlin lures, with some on live mackerel or sardinas. The strong roosterfish bite continues with fish averaging 15lbs inshore throughout the bay from Punta Pescadero to Punta Colorado, taking live mullet, mackerel and sardinas.

David Bush and sons Kevin & Ryan of Denver, CO, while fishing 4 days on Leonero super pangas, took 2 striped marlin, 48 yellowfin and 12 dorado, all taken while fly fishing.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 15, 2000

Continued great conditions at the East Cape, with daytime highs in the mid 90's, evening lows in the low 70's, calm seas, afternoon breezes and water temp in the low 80's. The incredible fishing continues, with tuna, billfish, dorado and roosters all feeding aggressively. Yellowfin tuna from 10 to 50lbs are concentrated just off Punta Arena, with as many as you want taking cedar plugs, hoochies and live sardinas. Bigger tuna to over 100lbs are moving with porpoise near Cabo Pulmo, with schools of smaller tuna right in front of Leonero, providing great action for our kayak fishermen. The billfish bite remains hot, with blues, stripers, and sailfish thick throughout the bay. The stripers are a bit lethargic right now, but the sails are still eating anything in the water, with many multiple hookups on green/white and blue/white trolled lures and both live and dead bait. The big bull dorado bite continues, with big pairs nearly all over 50lbs cruising outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, mostly on live sardinas, caballitos and all patterns of marlin lures. The roosterfish bite continues with fish from 10 to 30lbs (largest this week 40lbs) inshore throughout the bay from Punta Pescadero to Punta Colorado, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas.

Nowell Barnes-Webb of Kleinmond, South Africa, while fishing 1 day on a Leonero cruiser, released an 80lb sailfish and took a 30lb dorado and an 80lb yellowfin tuna.

Another great week at Leonero, with daytime highs in the low 90's, evening lows about 70, calm seas, afternoon breezes and water temp in the low 80's. This week's big news is the return of yellowfin tuna, with larger fish to 175lbs outside, while the north side of the bay is full of 15 to 40lb fish, taking live sardinas and trolled lures. Our manager, Gary, took a 25-pounder from a kayak on Saturday right in front of the hotel. The billfish bite remains phenomenal, with blues, stripers, and sailfish thick throughout the bay, from 2 to 20 miles out. The marlin are taking live bait and lures, with green/white and blue/white still working best, while the sailfish are almost jumping into the boat, taking anything in the water, dead bait, live bait, and all colored lures. On Saturday one boat released 12 sails. The big bull dorado bite continues, with fish nearly all over 50lbs located outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, mostly on live caballitos and all patterns of marlin lures. The roosterfish bite continues with limits of fish from 10 to 30lbs inshore throughout the bay from Punta Pescadero to Punta Colorado, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas.

Roger Torreiro & Richard Hassberger and their sons of Laguna Beach, CA, while 5 days cruiser fishing, released 15 striped marlin, 4 blue marlin, 12 sailfish, a 175lb yellowfin tuna, and limits of dorado to 50lbs.

Great conditions all week, with daytime highs to the mid 90's, evening lows about 70, calm seas, afternoon breezes and water temp in the low 80's. If you fished the East Cape this week and came home empty, sell your tackle and take up golf, because this is about as good as it gets. The billfish bite is phenomenal, with blues, stripers, and sailfish thick throughout the bay, from 2 to 20 miles out - we even had several swordfish hookups as well. The billfish are taking live bait and lures, with green/white and blue/white working best. The big bull dorado bite continues, with fish nearly all over 50lbs located outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, mostly on live caballitos and all patterns of marlin lures. The roosterfish bite continues with fish from 10 to 30lbs mixed in with jacks and pompano, inshore throughout the bay from Punta Pescadero to Punta Colorado, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas, with shore fishermen continuing to take roosters, jacks and pompano.

Mike Turko of Ontario, CA, while fishing one day on a Leonero cruiser, released 2 striped marlin to 160lbs, 2 sailfish, a 400lb blue marlin, and took 3 dorado to 50lbs, with this impressive catch all taken on a single lure - a Sevenstrand Kona Klone (green/white).

A blustery week with Hurricane Carlotta churning things up for several days, with calm conditions returning for the weekend. Daytime highs near 90, evening lows about 70, variable water temp from 80 to 83deg, with green water to about 10 miles out. Blue marlin have made an early appearance, with a number of fish to 300lbs taken, and some unlucky fishermen getting spooled in the process. The marlin are taking mostly lures, with green/black and blue/white working best. The big bull dorado bite continues, with fish nearly all over 50lbs located outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, mostly on live caballitos and blue/white marlin lures. The roosterfish bite continues (our manager, Gary, landed and released 10 roosters on Friday morning), with fish from 10 to 40lbs mixed in with jacks and pompano, inshore from Buena Vista to the lighthouse, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas, with shore fishermen continuing to take roosters, jacks and pompano during the evening hours.

Gus Gusterson of Auburn, CA, while fishing 4 days on Leonero cruisers and pangas, took striped marlin (his group total was 14 stripers), dorado, roosterfish, pargo, jacks, bonito, and pompano.

Continued great fishing, with striped marlin, yellowfin, dorado, and roosterfish all active, with lots of bait in the water continuing to hold the gamefish in the area. The striped marlin bite has moved farther outside, about 10 to 20 miles offshore, from La Ribera to Los Frailes, with Leonero anglers averaging over 1 striper per boat this week, taking almost exclusively trolled lures, with blue/white working best at the beginning of the week and orange/white producing best at week's end. Big bull dorado from 40 to 55lbs were located outside, from 10 to 20 miles out, from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, mostly on live caballitos and blue/white marlin lures. The yellowfin bite has returned, with limits of fish from 20 to 40lbs taking exclusively live sardinas at the tuna hole off Cabo Pulmo. The roosterfish bite continues, with fish from 10 to 40lbs mixed in with jacks and pompano, from La Ribera to Las Baracas, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas, with shore fishermen continuing to take roosters and jacks during the evening hours.

John Nelson, Dave Hilti and Bill Arnold were the winners of the Tahoe Fish & Hunt Club Tournament at Leonero this week, while fishing 2 days on a Leonero cruiser, released 3 striped marlin, took 4 dorado to 57lbs, and a 25lb yellowfin. The tournament also donated $500 to the La Ribera Health Clinic.

Another great week of fishing, with striped marlin, wahoo, yellowfin, dorado, and roosterfish all active, with lots of bait in the water continuing to hold the gamefish in the area. The striped marlin have moved closer, about 5 miles off La Ribera, with a 190lb striper taken on Saturday, and 10 blues hooked up this week, with trolled lures (blue/white & green/white) working best. Big dorado from 40 to 60lbs were located outside, mostly on live caballitos and marlin lures. The wahoo bite has returned, with fish up to 70lbs taking marauders, rapalas, and sardinas from Las Baracas to Los Frailes. The roosterfish bite continues, with big fish to 57lbs mixed in with jacks, pargo and pompano feeding very aggressively from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas, with shore fishermen doing well casting shiny lures during the evening hours.

Nearly every species of gamefish is biting right now at the East Cape, including - blue & striped marlin, wahoo, yellowfin, dorado, roosterfish, amberjack, pargo, and pompano, with large schools of baitfish holding the gamefish in the area. The striped marlin are thick from 12 to 30 miles offshore, with one of our boats hooking up 11 stripers in one day, with 5 blues to 250lbs also taken on Leonero boats this week, with trolled squid colored lures, caballitos and sardinas working best. Big dorado from 30 to 60lbs were mixed in with the marlin, mostly on live sardinas, caballitos and marlin lures. The yellowfin tuna bite continues, with fish from 10 to 40lbs taking exclusively live bait at the the same spot off Cabo Pulmo which has been producing limits for nearly 2 months. The roosterfish bite continues, with fish averaging 10lbs (10 fish over 50lbs this week, with the biggest 60lbs) mixed in with jacks and pompano feeding very aggressively from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking live mullet, caballitos and sardinas.

Big dorado to 55lbs were taken in open water from 15 to 25 miles straight out, mostly on live sardinas, cedar plugs and squid or green/black colored trolled marlin lures. Lots of striped marlin to 150lbs and a few sailfish mixed in were located in the same area, taking live bait and squid colored trolled lures. The yellowfin tuna bite continues, although the fish were smaller this week, averaging 10 to 12 lbs, with the same spot off Cabo Pulmo producing limits for nearly 6 weeks, mostly taking live sardinas, green feathers and cedar plugs. The roosterfish bite continues, with fish averaging from 10 to 15lbs feeding very aggressively near La Ribera, taking live lisas and sardinas. Inshore fishermen continue to take roosters, pompano and jacks on cut bait and sardinas right in front of the resort.

Dan Tillema and family of Escalon, CA, while fishing 2 days on Leonero cruisers, released 5 striped marlin to 150 lbs, and took 7 dorado to 55 lbs.

Big dorado to 50lbs were taken in open water, mostly on live sardinas and squid or green/black colored trolled marlin lures. Striped marlin and some sailfish mixed in were located from 10 to 20 miles offshore, taking live bait and all colors of trolled lures. Our kayak and shore fishermen continue to take pargo, roosters and jacks on cut bait and sardinas right in front of the resort.

The billfish bite remains hot, with limits of striped marlin with some sailfish mixed in located from 5 to 16 miles offshore. taking live bait and red/yellow/white trolled lures. The billfish bite wide open, with limits of striped marlin located throughout the bay, taking mostly live bait, with over 20 marlin taken and released on Thursday alone, with even a rare white marlin taken this week. Roosterfish averaging 20lbs are just off the beaches, from Leonero to the lighthouse, while our kayak and shore fishermen continue to take pargo, cabrilla and sierra on cut bait and sardinas right in front of the resort.

The yellowfin tuna bite continues off Cabo Pulmo, with larger fish up to 40lbs mixed in with the football-sized school fish, mostly taking live sardinas. Quality dorado with many fish over 50lbs were taken in open water, mostly on trolled marlin lures, with schools of smaller dorado under any floating debris, taking live sardinas. The billfish bite continues to improve, with sailfish and striped marlin located throughout the bay, taking mostly live "baracuta". Larger roosterfish are starting to appear just off the beaches, from Leonero to the lighthouse, while our kayak fishermen are nailing pargo, cabrilla and sierra on cut bait and sardinas right in front of the resort.

Kiko Vega, mayor of Tijuana, while fishing one day on a Leonero cruiser. took 2 striped marlin and a 40lb dorado.

The yellowfin tuna are here, mostly south of Cabo Pulmo, with larger fish up to 100lbs taking marlin lures, while smaller fish are taking live sardinas. Dorado to 50lbs are in open water taking mostly lures. The striped marlin bite is still on, but with most boats chasing the big tuna, fewer billfish were taken this week. Pargo, cabrilla, jacks and sierra are taking cut bait and sardinas right in front of the resort.

The Bill Waetze group of Idaho Falls, ID, while cruiser fishing at Leonero, took striped marlin to 130lbs, dorado to 50lbs, and tuna to 100lbs.

Nice weather, with daytime highs in the mid 80's, evening lows near 70, water temp in the mid 70's, and calm seas with light afternoon breezes. The striped marlin bite is on, and the fish have moved closer in, with a number of multiple hookups mostly on trolled lures. The wide open dorado bite of the last several weeks has tapered off a bit, but the fish are getting bigger, with most fish averaging over 20lbs, taking marlin lures and sardinas. An incredible pargo bite is on, right in front of Leonero, with lots of fish averaging 10lbs taken on sardinas. A group of kayak fishermen have been busy taking pargo, sierra, cabrilla and pompano.

Dorado still dominate the action, with limits of school-sized fish to 20lbs and some larger bulls to 40lbs taken everywhere in sight. The beginning of the week also saw lots of tuna to 35lbs and yellowtail to 50lbs mixed in with the dorado, with most fish taken on live sardinas. Lots of tailing striped marlin are being sighted, but we can't get past the dorado - as soon as we present bait or lures, the dorado are eating them before we can get the marlin interested. Still plenty of sierra remain just off the beach, from Leonero to Punta Colorada, with small rapalas and hoochies working best.

Pro golfer Nick Price and family, while fishing 4 days on a Leonero super panga, took and released an incredible number of dorado, and took lots of tuna to 30 lbs, and yellowtail to 50 lbs.

Limits of school-sized fish to 20lbs are south off Los Frailes, with larger dorado to 40lbs found north off Punta Pescadero, with most fish taken on live sardinas. Yellowfin tuna, skipjack, and bonito all from 5 to 20lbs are spread throughout the bay, with a small blue rapala providing the best action. Lots of sierra remain just off the beach, from Leonero to Punta Colorada, with small rapalas and hoochies working best. Giant squid to 40lbs are still offshore, taking anything bright. Shore fly fishermen are still taking jacks, roosterfish, and sierra from Leonero to Punta Colorada.

Fishing is starting to warm up, with every boat taking limits of dorado to 40lbs, taking live bait, hoochies and tuna feathers. The billfish action is returning, with numerous striped marlin strikes and several sailfish taken on trolled lures. Yellowfin tuna to 60lbs are hitting live bait and trolled lures about 10 to 14 miles offshore, from Cabo Pulmo to Los Frailes. Lots of sierra and bonito remain just off the beach, from Leonero to Punta Colorada, with small rapalas and hoochies working best. Giant squid to 50lbs are just offshore, taking anything bright. Shore fly fishermen are taking jack crevalle, roosterfish, and sierra from Leonero to Punta Colorada.
