marlin were hooked daily this week, with fish up to 400lbs
(3 over 300 lbs) taking darker colored trolled lures. Fewer
stripers this week, but lots of sails have moved within 1
mile of the beach, taking mostly live sardinas and a few on
trolled lures. A long boat ride to the north end of Cerralvo
Island is producing a wide open big yellowfin tuna bite, with
fish averaging 40-80lbs taking live sardinas, while smaller
tuna averaging 15lbs were biting south off Cabo Pulmo. The
schooling dorado haven't appeared, but many large solitary
bulls to 68lbs taken daily, mostly on trolled marlin lures.
Big pargo averaging 25-35lbs are schooling off the south beaches,
with roosterfish averaging 10-20lbs very active off all area
beaches.
Nick Strydom of Capetown, South Africa, while fishing 1 day
on a panga, released a striped marlin, and took a 56lb dorado,
a 27lb pargo and 2 yellowfin tuna.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 7, 2001
Mild weather, with daytime highs near 90, nice evenings about
70, mostly sunny skies, dead flat seas with continued variable
water temp from 75-85deg. The variable water temp has made
for an erratic bite outside, however, an incredible roosterfish
bite has kept many boats busy just off all area beaches, with
fish from 10-30lbs active all the way from Buena Vista to
south of the lighthouse. Additionally, huge schools of jacks
are all over the bay, with golden trevally and amberjack also
taken inside this week. Outside, sailfish are biting aggressively
south off Punta Arena, and striped marlin are still spread
throughout the bay, with trolled lures and live mullet working
equally well. The dorado bite continues to improve, with fish
from 25-45lbs taking live sardinas, mostly north off the Punta
Pescadero buoys. Yellowfin tuna from 40-80lbs are very active
off the north end of Cerralvo Island, taking live sardinas.
Steve Muse and family of Laguna Niguel, CA, while fishing
6 days on a cruiser, released 4 striped marlin and numerous
sailfish, and took dorado, tuna, pompano, pargo and jacks.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 30, 2001
Continued typical June weather, with daytime highs near 90,
nice evenings about 70, mostly sunny skies, dead flat seas
with variable water temp from 71-84deg. The variable water
temp has made for an erratic bite, however, by week's end
the water was consistently over 80deg, which meant better
catches. A strong billfish bite, with striped marlin, sailfish,
and a few blue marlin to 350lbs taking live bait and bleeding
mackerel colored trolled lures, about 4-5 miles straight off
the lighthouse. Schooling tuna have finally shown up, with
big fish to over 150lbs moving under porpoise, throughout
the bay, aggressively biting cedar plugs, marlin lures and
live bait. The schooling dorado were absent this week, however,
we were still taking big bull dorado to over 55lbs daily,
mostly outside on marlin lures. The inside bite remains hot,
with one panga releasing over 20 roosterfish in one morning.
Pargo, pompano and jacks are all biting, providing great action
for our shore, kayak and fly fishermen this week.
Irwin Tam of Cradock, South Africa, while fishing 2 days
on a cruiser, released multiple striped marlin and sailfish,
and took several dorado.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 23, 2001
More mild weather, with daytime highs near 90, nice evenings
about 70, mostly sunny skies, dead flat seas with warming
water temp around 77-79deg. The warming water has improved
the bite daily, with billfish and dorado outside, while pompano
and golden trevally were active inside. Striped marlin, sailfish
and a few blue marlin are hitting live bait and lures out
in the blue water, about 9-20 miles outside. Schools of dorado
from 10-20 lbs have finally shown up, with most boats limiting
easily, with some huge loners to 60lbs taken out in the blue
water, taking live sardinas and trolled marlin lures. The
tuna bite is erratic, with the area off La Ribera producing
best. Incredible inside action right in front of Leonero,
with golden trevally, pompano, jacks and pargo all bending
rods. Some boats fish this spot the whole day, on Friday we
counted 25 boats fishing there, about 250 yards straight in
front of the resort.
Howard Shannon of Atlanta, CA, while fishing 3 days on a
cruiser, released 3 striped marlin, and took numerous dorado,
tuna, and pompano.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 16, 2001
Mild weather, with daytime highs near 90, nice evenings about
70, mostly sunny skies, flat morning seas with midday breezes
and variable cool water temp around 71-78deg. Cold green water
outside has slowed the gamefish bite, however, clearing water
inside has caused the inshore bite to explode, with unlimited
roosterfish, jacks, sierra and big pompano taken this week.
Lots of billfish remain in the area, but the dirty cooler
water outside has slowed the bite. We're averaging about 1
billfish per 4 boats, with live sardinas and darker colored
trolled lures working best. The largest pompano we've ever
seen are biting inshore right now, with fish from 15 to 35lbs
taking live sardinas off most area beaches. As many roosterfish
as you want are biting off all area beaches, with most fish
from 5 to 7lbs, and the occasional larger fish to 35lbs taking
live sardinas and lisas. Big bull dorado from 40-55lbs continue
to be taken nearly daily, mostly outside on trolled marlin
lures. The inshore action for jacks, sierra and small tuna
remains hot, with our fly fishermen and light tackle enthusiasts
enjoying non-stop action off most area beaches.
Dan Tillema & family of Escalon, CA, while fishing 5
days on a cruiser, released marlin & shark, and took numerous
tuna, dorado, roosterfish and pompano.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 9, 2001
Nice weather, with daytime highs near 90, nice evenings about
70, mostly sunny skies, flat morning seas with afternoon breezes
and water temp about 80deg. Green water remains inside, with
clear blue water about 7 miles out. An incredible number of
striped marlin and sailfish are sighted daily, sometimes almost
as thick as a carpet, but they are still line shy, with 1-3
hookups per boat reported, in the blue water, about 7 to 20
miles straight out, with the fish taking equally live sardinas
& mullet and blue/green trolled lures. The yellowfin tuna
bite continues to improve, with larger fish averaging 30-40lbs
taken this week, mostly off the south end of Cerralvo Island,
with live sardinas working best. Big bull dorado from 40-55lbs
continue to be taken daily, mostly on trolled marlin lures,
with many fish found on the transition line between the green
and blue water. The wahoo bite is getting warmer, with fish
to 65lbs taking rapalas and marauders. The inshore action
for roosterfish and big amberjack remains hot, with lots of
jacks from 30-50lbs and roosters to 20lbs taken just off most
south beaches.
Fred Williams of Corral de Tierra, CA, while fishing 2 days
on a cruiser, released a striped marlin, and took tuna and
dorado to 40lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 2, 2001
More ideal weather, with daytime highs in the low 90's, nice
evenings about 70, mostly sunny skies, flat clear seas with
water temp around 76-81deg. Green water inside, with clear
blue water about 9 miles out. The billfish bite continues,
with an improving yellowfin bite and the occasional dorado
taken. Striped marlin and sailfish continue to bite consistently,
in the blue water, about 9 to 25 miles straight out, with
the fish taking equally live sardinas & mullet and blue/white
trolled lures. The yellowfin tuna bite continues to improve,
with fish to 50lbs (ave. 15lbs) taken this week, both north
and south, with live sardinas, cedar plugs and rapalas all
working well. Big bull dorado continue to be taken daily,
mostly on trolled marlin lures. The inshore action for roosterfish
and big amberjack remains hot, with lots of jacks from 30-50lbs
and roosters averaging 10lbs taken just off most south beaches.
Randal & Toni White of Canton, GA, while fishing 6 days
on a cruiser, released numerous billfish, and took wahoo,
tuna and dorado to 50lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 26, 2001
Continued incredible weather, with daytime highs in the low
90's, nice evenings about 70, mostly sunny skies, flat clear
seas with warming water temp around 79-81deg. Extraordinary
fishing at the East Cape right now. During the two-day "Let's
Talk Hookup" tournament, many different game fish species
were taken, including yellowtail, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado,
roosterfish, sailfish, striped marlin, blue marlin, jack crevalle
& pargo, with the best results north of Punta Pescadero.
Jumping and tailing striped marlin and sailfish remain thick
throughout the Sea of Cortez, with the fish taking equally
live sardinas and various colored trolled lures. Big bull
dorado continue to be taken daily, 1-2 per boat average, with
some taken on live sardinas, while most were on trolled marlin
lures. The yellowfin tuna bite continues to improve, with
fish from 25 to 72lbs taken this week, mostly north, almost
exclusively on live sardinas. Wahoo to 70lbs were taken on
trolled rapalas and marauders. The inshore bite for big roosterfish
remains hot, with 2 fish over 50lbs taken this week, while
our shore fly fishermen were taking lots of ladyfish.
Bob & Carol Blum of Los Angeles, CA, while fishing 1
day on a cruiser, released 2 sailfish & a striped marlin,
and took a 48lb wahoo, and 2 dorado (41 & 43lbs). Pete
Gray ("Let's Talk Hookup") and friends of San Diego,
CA, while fishing 1/2 day on a cruiser, released 5 sails and
a striped marlin.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 19, 2001
More pleasant weather, with daytime highs about 90, nice
evenings in the mid 60's, mostly sunny skies, flat clear seas
with warming water temp to 77deg. Jumping and tailing striped
marlin and sailfish are thick throughout the East Cape, with
the fish biting more aggressively than in weeks past, taking
mostly live caballitos and dark colored trolled lures. Blue
marlin have shown up early, with 2 fish over 500lbs taken
this week. The yellowfin tuna bite is getting even better,
with fish concentrated about 3-4 miles off Cabo Pulmo, in
the same hole that produced a steady bite for months on end
last season, with larger fish to 97lbs outside under porpoise,
with live sardinas, hoochies and cedar plugs all working well.
Big bull dorado to 62lbs were taken daily this week, with
many boats limiting out on schooling dorado in the 10lb range,
spread throughout the bay, with the area off Cabo Pulmo producing
best, with fish taking live sardinas and green/black trolled
lures. The inshore bite for big roosterfish is hot, with a
62lb fish taken Saturday, with many more in the 50lb range
taken off all south beaches, with live sardinas and mullet
working best.
JV Lattimore III of McKinney, TX, while fishing 1 day on
a super panga, released 2 sailfish, and took a 47lb dorado.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 12, 2001
Continued great weather, with daytime highs about 90, nice
evenings in the mid 60's, mostly sunny skies, flat clear seas
with warming water temp to 76deg. Jumping and tailing striped
marlin remain thick throughout the East Cape, however the
fish are still line shy as they are gorged on the huge schools
of squid and red crabs in the area. Almost all strikes were
on plastic, with squid colored trolled lures working best.
The yellowfin tuna bite is consistent, with fish from 15 to
65lbs found about 3-4 miles off Cabo Pulmo, in the same area
that produced a steady bite for months on end last season,
with the fish taking exclusively live sardinas. Solo big bull
dorado to 50lbs were taken daily this week, mostly on red
trolled marlin lures, with smaller fish taking hoochies and
live sardinas. Wahoo were also taken daily this week, mostly
on trolled rapalas or marauders, with an 80lb 'hoo taken on
Saturday. The inshore bite for roosterfish and jacks remains
active, with live sardinas and mullet working best.
Bill DeLeeuw of San Diego, CA, while fishing 3 days on a
cruiser, released 1 striped marlin, and took daily limits
of tuna to 65lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: May 5, 2001
Another week of great weather, with daytime highs in the
upper 80's, nice evenings in the mid 60's, mostly sunny skies,
flat clear seas with warming water temp to 75deg. Striped
marlin are everywhere! Tailers and jumpers are thick throughout
the East Cape, with literally thousands of tailers seen this
week, however the fish are line shy as they are gorged on
the huge schools of squid in the area. Almost all strikes
were on plastic, with black/green and red colored trolled
lures working best. The yellowfin tuna bite slowed a bit this
week, with smaller fish coming up to chum inshore of Cabo
Pulmo, with larger fish to 57lbs found under porpoise from
10-30 miles out, with most of the action coming on red colored
trolled lures, hoochies and cedar plugs. Solo big bull dorado
to 55lbs were taken daily this week, mostly on red trolled
marlin lures. Wahoo were also taken daily this week, mostly
on trolled rapalas. The inshore bite for roosterfish, jacks
and pargo remains active, with live sardinas and cast Krocodiles
working best.
Ron Young of Corpus Christi, TX, while fishing 2 days on
a cruiser, released 3 striped marlin, and took a 42lb dorado
and limits of tuna.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 28, 2001
Another week of great weather, with daytime highs in the
upper 80's, nice evenings in the mid 60's, mostly sunny skies,
flat clear seas with water temp about 71 - 74deg. The late
winter with erratic water temp has made for an inconsistent
bite. Yellowfin tuna have moved south, with fish from 12-82lbs
are 20 miles off Los Frailes, under huge schools of porpoise,
with most boats limiting out, with half the fish taking live
sardinas, while the rest were taking cedar plugs, hoochies
and rapalas. Striped marlin and sailfish remain spread throughout
the bay, but are still line shy as they are gorged with squid,
with 2 or 3 fish taken daily on red trolled lures and live
mackerel. Big bull dorado over 40lbs were taken daily this
week, taken mostly on red trolled marlin lures. The inshore
action for roosterfish and pargo is hot, despite the cool
water, with live sardinas and cast Krocodiles working best.
Lots of sierra remain off area beaches.
Jeff McCormick of Santee, CA, while fishing 2 days on a cruiser,
released a striped marlin & 3 roosterfish, and took limits
of tuna to 42lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 21, 2001
Another week of great weather, with daytime highs in the
upper 80's, nice evenings in the mid 60's, mostly sunny skies,
flat clear seas with continued warming water temp about 74deg.
The warming water continues to improve the bite. Dorado have
reappeared in numbers, limits of tuna and some sails and striped
marlin were taken daily. Yellowfin tuna are 20-30 miles straight
off Leonero, under porpoise, with limits of 20-30lb fish and
some bigger fish to 64lbs were taking live sardinas, cedar
plugs and hoochies. Striped marlin and sailfish are everywhere
offshore, but are line shy as they are gorged with squid,
with a few taken daily on red trolled lures and live sardinas.
The dorado are back, with lots of solo big fish to 52lbs taken
mostly on red trolled marlin lures. The inshore action remains
hot, with Dennis Spike's kayak group taking pompano, jacks,
sierra, skipjack, bonito, pargo and roosterfish.
Duncan Hadden of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, while cruiser fishing
for 3 days, took daily limits of tuna to 40lbs, a striped
marlin, and a 47lb dorado.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 14, 2001
Nearly perfect weather, with daytime highs in the mid 80's,
cool evenings near 60, mostly sunny skies, dead flat clear
seas with warming water temp about 71 - 72deg. Warming water
combined with huge quantities of bait (squid & mackerel)
has brought lots of striped marlin to the East Cape. On Saturday,
every boat scored, with stripers to 150lbs taking both lures
(red best color) and live bait, with most fish taken gorged
with squid. Tailers are spread everywhere about 20-30 miles
offshore in the blue water. The inshore action for pargo and
jacks is strong south off Las Barracas, with pargo to 37lbs
taken this week, mostly on live sardinas and mackerel. The
yellowfin bite remains a pick, with only 3 or 4 fish per day
showing up at the cleaning station, with fish to 65lbs taking
mostly rapala CD-18's. The dorado bite is still off, look
for improving conditions with the warmer water.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 7, 2001
Nearly perfect weather, with daytime highs in the mid 80's,
cool evenings near 60, mostly sunny skies, dead flat seas
with variable water temp from 67 - 71deg, with 2 windy days
during midweek. A late winter with unusually cool water has
kept the billfish bite slow, except for 2 days at midweek
when every boat took at least one striped marlin, with most
strikes coming on live mackerel. African pompano are biting
aggressively off Las Arenas beaches, taking rapalas and slow-trolled
live sardinas. Lots of pargo and cabrilla are being taken
daily, right in front of the hotel, with slow-trolled sardinas
working best. The inshore action for roosterfish and jacks
is strong throughout most area beaches, with some jacks up
to 70 lbs taking rapalas, live sardinas and mackerel.
12-yr old Luke Doran of Woodland Hills, CA, while fishing
1 day on a cruiser this week, took his first striped marlin.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: March 31, 2001
Absolutely perfect weather, with daytime highs in the mid
80's, cool evenings near 60, mostly sunny skies, dead flat
seas with variable water temp. Unusually cool water has slowed
the gamefish bite this week, with the trick to getting hooked
up was finding warm patches of water. Those who did were instantly
hooking up striped marlin, with most hookups coming on live
mackerel, caballito, and sardinas, with fish located throughout
the bay. Limits of yellowfin tuna to 35lbs were reported way
south, off the outer Gordo Banks. The inshore action is keeping
our anglers busy, with pargo, snook, cabrilla, sierra and
jacks all biting aggressively off the area beaches.
Cooke Bausman III of Sarasota, FL, while fishing 5 days on
a cruiser this week, released 4 striped marlin, and took yellowfin
to 42lbs, and dorado to 30lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: March 24, 2001
Absolutely perfect weather, with daytime highs in the mid
80's, cool evenings near 60, mostly sunny skies, dead flat
seas and warming water temp about 70. The great weather is
warming the water rapidly, and any boats finding warm patches
of water are instantly hooking up striped marlin, with fish
attacking teasers, but most hookups coming on live mackerel,
about 20 miles off Cabo Pulmo. With the bay full of sardinas
right now, the gamefish action is spread throughout the area,
with dorado to 40lbs taken early in the week, shifting to
pargo to 50lbs, cabrilla to 20lbs, and sierra to 8lbs by week's
end. The tuna bite was south of Los Frailes this week, with
most fish taken on flylined live sardinas.
Cooke Bausman III of Sarasota, FL, while fishing 3 days on
a cruiser, released multiple striped marlin each day.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: March 17 2001
Continued mild spring weather, with daytime highs in the
upper 70's, cool evenings in the mid 50's, partly cloudy skies,
calm mornings with breezy afternoons and water temp 65-67.
Light fishing pressure with few fishermen this past week,
despite the improving conditions. The catch continues to be
mostly inshore, with sierra, skipjack and amberjack providing
most of the action. Midweek saw our first yellowfin tuna of
the season, with fish to 25lbs taking mostly live bait. With
lots of mackerel in the water, the fish remain line shy and
lighter tackle was producing better. Plenty of tailing striped
marlin continue to be sighted, but few showed interest in
biting - watch this to change as the water begins to warm.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: March 10, 2001
Continued typical early spring weather, with daytime highs
in the upper 70's, cool evenings in the mid 50's, partly cloudy
skies with water temp 67-69. An off week for fishing, despite
the improving weather, with only 2 days of wind early in the
week. The catch was mostly inshore, with sierra, skipjack
and amberjack providing most of the action. With lots of mackerel
in the water, the fish were not biting aggressively. Lots
of tailing striped marlin were sighted, but few showed interest
in biting - watch for an improving marlin bite in the coming
weeks.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: March 3, 2001
Continued typical early spring weather, with daytime highs
in the upper 70's, cool evenings in the mid 50's, with breezy
conditions during midweek and water temp 67-69. Nicer weather
this week allowed more boats to go out, and they found most
of the fish have moved north, about 3 to 5 miles off Punta
Pescadero. Dorado to 30lbs were taking mostly live mackerel,
either slow trolled or flylined. Skipjack were also active
in the area, taking hoochies and live mackerel. Lots of tailing
striped marlin were sighted, but few hookups. Inshore fishing
continues to produce roosterfish, pargo, jacks and sierra,
all actively biting along area beaches.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: February 24, 2001
Continued typical winter weather, with daytime highs in the
upper 70's, cool evenings in the mid 50's, with breezy conditions
most of the week (settling down over the weekend) and water
temp 67-69. Bumpy seas limited the number of boats going out
again this week, with most boats taking catches of 8-10lb
dorado close in before returning early to beat the rough conditions.
The roosterfish bite continues, with the best results south
of the lighthouse, where the inshore seas were calmer, with
fish averaging 10- 15lbs taking live mackerel slow-trolled
just off the beach. Inshore fishing is producing pargo, jacks
and sierra, all actively biting along area beaches.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: February 17, 2001
Typical winter weather, with daytime highs in the upper 70's,
cool evenings in the mid 50's, with breezy conditions most
of the week and water temp 67-69. Bumpy seas limited the number
of boats going out this week, but those that ventured out
were rewarded with limits of dorado averaging 8-10lbs, spread
throughout the bay, taking mostly slow trolled or fly lined
live mackerel. The roosterfish bite remains on, with the best
results south of the lighthouse, where the inshore seas were
calmer, with fish averaging 15lbs taking live mackerel. Striped
marlin are spread throughout the bay, from just off the beaches
to about 8 miles out, feeding on the large schools of mackerel
in the water. Inshore fishing continues to produce pargo,
jacks and sierra, all actively biting along area beaches.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: February 10, 2001
Typical winter conditions, with daytime highs in the upper
70's, cool evenings in the mid 50's, with 2 windy days during
midweek and water temp 67-70. Green cooler water on the Pacific
side of the peninsula has pushed the game fish into the Sea
of Cortez early this season. Lots of mackerel in the water
is also helping the bite. The roosterfish bite is on, early
this year, with large schools of fish averaging 15lbs just
off the beaches at La Ribera, taking live mackerel. It's apparent
that the roosters are biting year 'round. Striped marlin abound
from just offshore to about 10 miles out, from directly in
front of Leonero throughout the north Palmas Bay, with nearly
every boat hooking up on slow-trolled live mackerel. Lots
of small dorado averaging 8lbs are being taken throughout
the bay, with the fish concentrated under large floating patches
of sargasso weed, taking mostly live mackerel. Inside fishing
was producing pargo, jacks and roosterfish, all actively biting
along area beaches.
Jim Nardulli of Denver, CO, while fishing 2 days on Leonero
superpangas, released 2 striped marlin, took limits of dorado
and 11 roosterfish to 30lbs.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: February 3, 2001
Typical winter conditions, with daytime highs in the upper
70's, cool evenings in the mid 50's, with windy days and water
temp about 70. The winter north winds blew all this past week,
with no Leonero boats going out. With lots of bait pushed
up against the beaches, shore fishing was producing sierra,
pargo and jacks, taking mostly casted shiny lures.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: January 27, 2001
Mild conditions continue, with daytime highs in the mid 70's,
evening lows about 60, calm days with water temp about 70.
Light fishing pressure with few boats going out. Schools of
mackerel are keeping the gamefish close in. The striped marlin
bite remains steady, with tailers taking mostly flylined live
bait, mostly south, from the lighthouse to Los Frailes. Dorado
from 10-20lbs are spread throughout the bay, schooling under
floating debris, taking live bait, hoochies and lures. Football
sized tuna remain north, while larger fish from 25-35lbs are
located from Cabo Pulmo southward, taking hoochies, live bait
and strip bait. Skipjack are hitting bait and hoochies throughout
the bay, while schools of sierra are just off the beaches,
taking hoochies and small rapalas. Bottom fishing for pargo
off La Ribera producing excellent results.
Barry Burchell, of Aucedale, South Africa, while fishing
on Leonero boats this week, took striped marlin, tuna, sierra,
dorado and pargo.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: January 20, 2001
Mild conditions prevail, with daytime highs in the mid 70's,
evening lows about 60, breezy days with water temp in the
low 70's. Windy during midweek, with calm weather returning
for the weekend. Light fishing pressure with few boats going
out. Schools of mackerel are keeping the gamefish close in.
Stripers and sails located south, from the lighthouse to Los
Frailes, from 3 to 10 miles out, taking exclusively live mackerel.
Dorado averaging 10- 15lbs are spread throughout the bay,
schooling under floating debris, taking live bait, hoochies
and lures, with most anglers taking limits. Football sized
tuna remain off Punta Pescadero, taking hoochies, live bait
and strip bait. Roaming schools of sierra are just off the
beaches, with the fish aggressively biting hoochies and small
rapalas.
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: January 13, 2001
Welcome to the 2001 East Cape fishing season. Typical January
conditions, with daytime highs in the mid 70's, evening lows
about 60, breezy days with water temp in the low 70's. Few
boats fishing, despite several days of unusually mild weather
at midweek. Lots of fish for those who did venture forth.
Most boats searched out billfish, as mackerel are abundant
right now, with stripers and sails taking mostly live bait,
from the lighthouse to Los Frailes, from 3 to 10 miles out.
Dorado averaging 15lbs are spread throughout the bay, taking
live bait, hoochies and lures. Football sized tuna are thick
off Punta Pescadero, taking hoochies, live bait and strip
bait. Yellowtail are reported biting in good numbers off Muertos
Bay, look for them to move in closer over the next few weeks.
Lots of sierra taken just off the beaches, with the fish aggressively
biting hoochies and small rapalas. |
