Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 15, 2003
With north winds most of the week, combined with fewer anglers,
there's not much to report. By week's end, the winds appear
to be settling down, and we're looking forward to a resumption
of late fall conditions. Expect sailfish, striped marlin,
yellowfin tuna, dorado, pargo, amberjack and sierra to be
biting during the upcoming weeks.

Normal conditions have finally returned to the area after
a crazy summer, with cooler air temps in the mid 80's, warm

southeast breezes. Another good week, as the recent storms
have created lots of floating debris patches for fish to congregate

the bay, from Cerralvo to Los Frailes, with dropped back live
mackerel and trolled green/white lures working best.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 13, 2003
Continued mild weather, with stable water temp around 85deg,
with flat calm seas with few breezes. Ever since Hurricane
Ignacio passed us by 2 weeks ago, sucking out all the humidity
and cooling the water a bit, fishing has been excellent. Bait
has improved dramatically, with plentiful mackerel and sardinas.
The hot inshore fishing has finally slowed, but blue &
striped marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo, and dorado are all
biting aggressively.
Billfish - a strong bite, with blue marlin, striped marlin
and sailfish located about 7-15 miles off the lighthouse,
with dropped back mackerel and blue/white lures working best.

By - Gary Barnes-Webb
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: September 6, 2003
Mild weather for September, with variable mixed flat blue/green
water 80-88deg, with 2 days of rain loading the water with
even more debris, with cooler than normal air temp to about
90. Wide open fishing continues this week. Plenty of good
bait combined with lots of floating debris made for some exceptional
fishing. Limits for all anglers daily of both tuna and dorado,
mixed with a wide open billfish bite and lots of wahoo made
this one of the best fishing weeks of the year.
Yellowfin Tuna - close in, about 3-5 miles right in front
of Leonero. Small pods of porpoise are holding tuna from 15-40lbs
(ave 20lbs). Very light pressure so fish are staying up. Fish
are line shy, so most were taken on hoochies and cedar plugs.
All anglers limiting.
Dorado - by far the best bite of the year. On Saturday we
had more dorado than tuna. All anglers limiting, with schooling
fish from 15-25lbs and some larger fish to 50lbs are under
floating debris. Some fish are very close inshore (200 yards
off the beach). Light fishing pressure with not many boats
fishing.
Wahoo - over 20 taken this week, with fish from 30-40lbs
taking lures 3-5 miles offshore.
Billfish - striped marlin, sailfish and blue marlin are all
active in the Gulf. A consistent bite, but light pressure
as most anglers are targeting tuna and dorado. Some big blues
to 400lb+ are taking lures 2-7 miles off the lighthouse.
Inshore - little inshore fishing this week, as all boats
are going outside for the exceptional tuna/dorado bite.
Fisherman of the Week - Charles Davis of Fallbrook, CA, while
fishing 2 days in a cruiser, took 2 wahoo to 35lbs, 6 tuna
to 40lbs, and 10 dorado to 45lbs.
By - John Ireland
Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 30, 2003
The first part of the week was interrupted by Hurricane Ignacio
as it passed through the area. By midweek, normal conditions
had returned to the Eastcape, with variable mixed flat blue/green
water 79-87deg, loaded with storm debris, with cooler than
normal air temp to about 90. Ignacio's silver lining is that
fishing often breaks open after a storm, and this time was
no exception, as tuna, dorado, striped marlin, sailfish &
roosterfish are all biting aggressively. Giant squid to 4ft
are biting off La Ribera.
Dorado - with lots of floating storm debris, the dorado bite
has picked up, with fish to 55lbs under structures, with hoochies
and live sardinas producing best.
Tuna - in the last 2 days (Fri-Sat) limits for all anglers,
with yellowfin averaging 25lbs (a 240lb'er taken on Sat) schooling
under porpoise, 7-10 miles off the lighthouse. A wide open
bite, with hoochies, cedar plugs and live sardinas all working
well.
Billfish - lots of tailing and jumping striped marlin and
sailfish. At least half the fleet hooking up daily, with darker
colored lures best.
Inshore - roosterfish still active, best from Leonero to
the lighthouse (a 55lb gallo was taken from a kayak). Lots
of jacks, pompano and a few pargo also taken, with live sardinas
and casted chrome lures best.
Fisherman of the Week - Tim Wright of Moreno Valley, CA,
while fishing 2 days on a cruiser, took or released 2 striped
marlin, a 50lb dorado, 12 tuna including a whopping 240lb
monster (click here for photo).

area.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: August 16, 2003
Mild summer mornings, hot midday highs in the upper 90's,
with variable warm clear, flat water from 82-88deg. Fishing
is turning around after almost a month of scratch fishing,
the bite has definitely picked up. The absence of bait had
hurt the bite the last few weeks, but the bait is back and
so are the game fish. Blue marlin, sailfish, tuna, roosterfish,
dorado and even wahoo are back in numbers.
Billfish - more blue marlin this week, with 4 fish released
out of 7 boat departures on Saturday, mixed with sailfish.

strikes on darker colored lures. Sailfish also more active
this week, mixed with tuna, taking lures as well as live sardinas.

porpoise - very line shy. Solitary fish closer inshore biting

plugs.

the bay, with fish taking mostly marlin lures, with a steadily
improving bite.

unusual. Lots of pompano and look-down's.

fishing 5 days on a super panga, took or released dorado,
tuna and roosterfish.
By - John Ireland

and even a blue marlin off a kayak rounding out the fare.

30 miles outside. Blue marlin and stripers were spread throughout
the bay, taking mostly trolled lures, but continue to be picky
biters.
Dorado - big dorado 40-50lbs, 2-5 miles off the lighthouse,
with fish taking live sardinas and marlin lures.
Tuna - large schools of yellowfin (10-25lbs) with some bigger
fish 40-100lbs about 20- 30 miles outside, with limits of
fish when you find them, with live bait, cedar plugs and hoochies
working best.
Roosterfish/Pargo - the unprecedented rooster year continues,
with fish to 70lbs cruising most area beaches (best from Punta
Colorada to south of the lighthouse), taking slow-trolled
live mullet, with pargo to 25lbs mixed in.

fishing on a kayak, took a 200lb blue marlin. The fish took
an hour to subdue on 50lb test, and took Jon on quite a ride.

was a bit slower than expected with the stabilizing warm water.
A lot of bait showed up at midweek, with big roosterfish feasting
on the bonanza.
Billfish - lots of sailfish mixed in with small tuna about
30 miles outside. Blue marlin and stripers were spread throughout
the bay, taking mostly trolled lures, but were picky biters.
Dorado - big dorado 40-50lbs, close off the lighthouse, with
fish taking live sardinas and marlin lures.
Tuna - large schools of yellowfin (10-25lbs) about 30 miles
outside, with limits of fish when you find them, with live
bait, cedar plugs and hoochies working best.
Roosterfish/Pargo - the unprecedented rooster year continues,
with fish to 50lbs cruising most area beaches (best from Punta
Colorada to south of the lighthouse), taking slow-trolled

Beach, VA , while fishing 1 day on a cruiser, took or released
a blue marlin and multiple dorado.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 26, 2003
Nice mornings, midday highs in the mid 90's, warm water from
81-89deg (some green water), with mostly calm seas (some afternoon

week, but by week's end a strong roosterfish bite inside along

of days, with the best action north of Punta Pescadero, with

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 19, 2003
Great fishing weather - pleasant mornings, midday highs in
the mid 90's, warm clear water from 83-87deg, with mostly
calm seas (some afternoon south east breezes). The East Cape
is enjoying a very consistent fishing year, and this week
is no exception. Yellowfin, striped marlin, sailfish, roosterfish
and an improving dorado bite made for a good week.
Dorado - a slow bite for the last couple of weeks, but improving
as rain opens up washes and deposits debris in the Cortez.
On Saturday, our fleet did well trolling the scum lines, with
fish to 45lbs also taking sardinas.
Tuna - no real size, but yellowfin are everywhere. Very spread,
under porpoise, with lots of pods. All anglers enjoying success,
lots of pressure, but enough schools to support all the boats,
with cedar plugs, hoochies & live sardinas taking fish
to 50lbs (ave. 12lbs).
Billfish - the consistent striped marlin and sailfish bite
continues, very little pressure as most boats are targeting
tuna, with 3 per boat not unusual. Fish are spread from Cerralvo
to Punta Arena, with fish taking a mix of live bait and lures.
Roosterfish - the best year we can remember continues, with
fish to 72lbs cruising most area beaches (best from Leonero
to La Ribera), taking slow-trolled live mullet.

week, with lots of tuna - midweek saw some 100lb+ fish. Striped
marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, dorado, and roosterfish also
active.
Marlin - the steady striper bite continues, 4-10 miles off
the lighthouse, with the warmer water bringing more blues
and sails, with fish taking a mix of live bait and lures.
Yellowfin Tuna - tuna have moved in closer, with multiple
schools under porpoise, about 7-30 miles out. Limits of fish
for all anglers targeting tuna, with fish 15-40lbs taking
hoochies and cedar plugs, while larger fish to over 100lbs
taking live lisas dropped back.

taken equally on bait and lures.

Anglers, while fishing 2 days on a cruiser, took or released
tuna to 100lbs, roosterfish to 40lbs, and dorado to 40lbs.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: July 5, 2003
More of the same great weather - nice mornings, midday highs
in the mid 90's, warmer clear water around 82-83deg, with
mostly calm seas (some afternoon east breezes). In general
the fishing has been a bit slower this week, best described

Marlin - lots of stripers, but still very picky biters, with
the best results about 5 miles off the lighthouse.
Yellowfin Tuna - tuna have moved way outside, about 40-50
miles off the lighthouse, under porpoise. For the few boats

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 28, 2003
The great weather continues - cool mornings, midday highs
in the mid 90's, clear water from 78-83deg, with mostly calm
seas (some afternoon east breezes). The overall bite was a
bit slow the first of the week, but really picked up the last
3 days. Roosterfish to 60lbs, a wahoo per day for the fleet,
big dorado, limits of tuna, lots of striped marlin and a few
blues rounded out the action this week.
Yellowfin Tuna - 22 miles off the lighthouse, under porpoise.
A wide open bite when you find them, with fish 15-45lbs taking
hoochies and cedar plugs.
Marlin - lots of stripers, but very picky biters. All boats
targeting marlin successful, with fish spread about 5-6 miles
offshore. Blue marlin biting closer in, about 2-3 miles off
the beach, with live bonito producing best.
Dorado - the dorado action has really picked up, with fish
35-50lbs taken exclusively on marlin lures.
Wahoo - still a good bite for us, with a 'hoo per day taken
for the fleet, with dark colored marauders and rapalas working
best.
Roosterfish/pargo - a strong rooster bite, with fish to 65lbs
cruising all area beaches, taking slow-trolled live mullet.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 21, 2003
The great early summer weather continues - cool mornings,
midday highs in the low 90's, clear warming water from 80-83deg,
with mostly calm seas. The overall bite was good, but a bit
slower than the last couple of weeks. The hot wahoo bite has
also slowed the last few days. Striped marlin and yellowfin
tuna are very consistent and by far our most productive species.
The dorado bite is slower than normal but the roosterfish
are biting, with some real quality fish to 75lbs.
Striped Marlin - a good year, very consistent, closer inshore
3-7 miles offshore, biting darker colored lures. All anglers
targeting marlin are enjoying success.
Yellowfin Tuna - lots & lots around, smaller fish 10-20lbs,
some under porpoise, very spread from Pescadero to Los Frailes,
10-20 miles offshore, with hoochies and cedar plugs producing
best.
Dorado - a so-so bite, not schooling, with larger fish taking
marlin lures, but definitely slower this week.
Roosterfish/pargo - a wide open rooster bite! Very active
all over Palmas bay, really crashing the bait right out in
front of Leonero. Some big fish to 75lbs taking slow-trolled
live mullet. Pargo to 25lbs taking live bait.

Another outstanding fishing week. The great early summer
weather continues - cool mornings, midday highs in the low
90's, clear water from 77-81deg, with calm mornings seas and
some afternoon breezes. Striped marlin, sailfish, blue marlin,
dorado, wahoo and roosterfish are all biting consistently.
Nearly a carbon copy of last week, except for more blue marlin
and a bit smaller dorado. Most all fish taken in the same
area, about 10 miles off Cabo Pulmo.
Billfish - the blue marlin action has picked up, with 5-6
released per day, with fish averaging 200lbs feeding on and
mixed in with small tuna, off Cabo Pulmo. Still lots of striped
marlin, mixed in with sailfish, spread throughout the bay.
Wahoo - the bite has spread, with the best results from 4-6

Wahoo - the best wahoo bite we've ever seen, almost unbelievable,
with quality fish to 100lbs 3-5 miles off Leonero. Lots of

40lbs spread from 1-5 miles offshore, taking mostly live bait
and hoochies.
Inshore - sierra, roosterfish and pargo all biting just off
most area beaches.
Fisherman of the Week - Nick Bowker of Bedford, South Africa,
while fishing 1 day on a super panga, took or released a striped
marlin, 3 dorado to 40lbs, and 2 tuna to 40lbs.

A carbon copy of last week, with mild weather - cool mornings,
warmer than normal midday highs near 80, warm water about

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: January 11, 2003
Continued typical January weather, with cool mornings, balmy
days with air and water both in the 70's, with moderate north
wind off and on most of the week. A few boats went out during
the calm days, with limits of sierra, some school-sized dorado
and pargo bending rods, with most fish taken on blue/white
hoochies and chrome lures. The bite moved a bit south this
week, with the area from La Ribera to the lighthouse producing
best. Shore fishermen were kept busy with sierra, pargo &
toro active on most area beaches.
Rick Parks and family, of Watsonville, CA, while fishing
3 days on a super panga, repeatedly released huge numbers
of sierra (some fish over 5lbs), as well as dorado and toro.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: January 4, 2003
Typical winter weather, with cool mornings, balmy days with
air and water both in the 70's, with moderate north wind all
week. With few fishermen, and the north wind continuing to
disrupt fishing conditions, no boats fished again this week.
Shore fishermen were kept busy with sierra, pargo & cabrilla
active on most area beaches. Independent boats that ventured
out were rewarded with limits of sierra, with the best spot
right in front of Leonero.
