Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 11, 2005
Very pleasant weather, with cool mornings in the mid 60's
and afternoon highs to near 90, with clear, sunny days and
mostly calm mornings with some early morning fog and afternoon
SE breezes. Water temp was cooler this week, with 76deg off
Cerralvo and 70deg off Los Frailes. With the cooler water,
the bite was very erratic, with lots of flags one day followed
by nearly nothing the next. Lots of fish in the water, but
don't seem interested in biting. However, schools of sardinas
are reported off Cerralvo, and once they move in closer, look
for an improved bite.
Billfish - the bite is very spread, from
Punta Pescadero to Los Frailes, about 10-20 miles out, with
tailing striped marlin everywhere. 4 swordfish were hooked
up, and a couple of black marlin were taken as well. Fish
remain picky biters taking live bait only.
Tuna - the bite was slower this week, with
tuna under porpoise about 10-30 miles straight off Leonero.
Tuna 15-30lbs taking hoochies and cedar plugs. Fish are skittish,
with the schools going deep after the first couple of hookups.
Football-sized tuna very close in, about a mile off La Ribera,
taking mostly hoochies.
Dorado - few fish, very spread, taking mostly
trolled marlin lures.
Inside - the roosterfish bite was steady,
with fish 20-50lbs off the beaches from La Ribera to Las Barracas,
taking live bait, with amberjack and some yellowtail taken
off the reefs early in the week. Pargo and large pompano are
taking bait off Los Frailes.
Notes - Phil & Pam Bensimon of La Mesa,
CA, won the Let's Talk Hookup Tournament, while Leonero regulars
Mike & Carol McCabe of San Diego, CA, along with Chuck
Wortz of Bisbee, AZ, in one spectacular day of fishing, took
or released 2 black marlin, 5 striped marlin, and 6 yellowfin
tuna. First time Eastcape fisherman Charlie Ladas lassoed
an 80lb swordfish that somehow got the line double wrapped
around the middle with the hook snagged on the line, earning
him the nickname "Swordfish Cowboy".

bite is hot, with big roosterfish biting aggressively near
shore, with the tuna bite finally moving closer in.
Billfish - the bite is very spread, from
Punta Pescadero to Los Frailes, with lots of tailing striped
marlin. Fish remain picky biters (this should improve as the
water temp stabilizes), with fish taking live bait and trolled
lures equally well.
Tuna - the bite has finally moved closer
in, with tuna under porpoise about 10 miles straight off Leonero.
Fish are picky biters, with tuna 10-30lbs taking hoochies
and rapalas. The bite should bust open once sardinas show
up.

in were monsters, with fish to over 60lbs taking live bait

this week (largest 76lbs), with fish averaging 30lbs off the
beaches from Leonero to Las Barracas, taking live bait, with
