Weekly Fish Report for week ending: June 24, 2006

Last Minute Update - On Saturday the fishing broke wide open, with 30-60lb tuna and 20-50lb wahoo mixed in, concentrated about 26 miles straight out from Leonero, with all boats limiting out.

Water - the water temp continues holding steady, 83-85deg throughout the bay, with clear flat conditions - more great fishing weather.

Air - typical June conditions, with warm highs in the low 90's, morning lows in the mid 70's. Calm mornings with some afternoon SE breezes..

Overview - the bite remains close in, spread throughout the bay, all within 2-3 miles off the beaches, from Punta Pescadero south to Los Frailes. Lots of strong live bait. Marlin, dorado and tuna all biting well. The wide open inshore bite continues, with many roosterfish (to 60lbs), with amberjack and cabrilla mixed in.

Billfish - striped marlin are close in, 2-5 miles off the beaches, from Rancho Leonero south to Los Frailes, taking mostly lures. Several blue marlin were also taken in the same area (largest estimated at 500lbs). Averaging more than 1 per boat.

Dorado - fewer dorado as most boats were targeting marlin, but a bit larger, with fish to 45lbs (ave 15lbs), taking mostly live sardinas and cedar plugs. Fish are concentrated in 2 areas, north at the buoys off Punta Pescadero and south off Cabo Pulmo, averaging about 2 per boat.

Tuna - fish continue to be concentrated at the tuna hole off Cabo Pulmo, with fish to 70lbs (mostly 10-15lbs), taking exclusively live sardinas. Averaging 2 per boat.

Inshore - the exceptional bite continues, with lots of big roosterfish to 60lbs biting off all beaches from La Ribera to Las Barracas, taking live sardinas and mullet. Amberjack and cabrilla are mixed in, with a few dorado as well.

Fishermen of the Week - results of the Little One Marlin Tournament led by Ron Dulin of Long Beach, CA - 10 boats fishing for 4 days released 50 marlin, including 2 blues (largest 500lbs).

Happy Father's Day Weekend!

Water - the water temp is holding steady, 83-85deg throughout the bay, with clear flat conditions - continued great fishing weather.

Air - typical June conditions, with warm highs in the low 90's, morning lows in the mid 70's. Calm mornings with some afternoon SE breezes..

Overview - the bite remains close in, with fewer marlin and sails as most boats are chasing the hot tuna/dorado bite, all within 2-3 miles off the beaches, from La Ribera south to Los Frailes. Lots of strong live bait. The great inshore bite continues, with many roosterfish (to 60lbs), with jacks, pompano and pargo mixed in.

Billfish - striped marlin are close in, 2-5 miles off the beaches, taking mostly lures. Fewer fish as most boats are concentrating on the incredible tuna/dorado bite.

Dorado - limits of dorado (as many as you want) in a mix of sizes from 8-45lbs, taking mostly live sardinas. Fish are close in, 2-3 miles off the beaches, from La Ribera to Los Frailes.

Tuna - an early morning strong bite, with fish concentrated at the tuna hole off Cabo Pulmo, with fish to 90lbs (mostly 10-15lbs), taking exclusively live sardinas. Many boats limiting out.

Inshore - the exceptional bite continues, with big roosterfish to 60lbs biting off all beaches from La Ribera to Las Barracas, taking live sardinas and mullet. Kayakers taking dorado, pargo, pompano and jacks, close to the beaches, throughout the bay.

Fishermen of the Week - in an amazing 90 minute stretch of fishing at midweek, Leonero Webmaster Roy and Jean'e Harkleroad took or released 33 dorado (mostly 8-10lbs), 2 tuna and a 40lb roosterfish.

Water - the water temp continues to warm, 83-85deg throughout the bay, with clear flat conditions - more great fishing weather.

Air - typical June conditions, with warm highs in the low 90's, morning lows in the mid 70's. Calm mornings with some afternoon SE breezes..

Overview - the bite remains close in, with marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna and some wahoo all within 2-3 miles off the beaches, from La Ribera south to Los Frailes. Lots of strong live bait. The great inshore bite continues, with as many roosterfish as we've ever seen (to 40lbs), with jacks and pompano mixed in.

Billfish - fish are close in, 2-5 miles off the beaches. Our first blue marlin of the season came in on Friday. Not much pressure as most boats are concentrating on the incredible tuna/dorado bite. Striped marlin with a few sailfish mixed in, in the same area, with darker lures working best.

Dorado - limits of dorado (ave 5/boat) in a mix of sizes from 10-50lbs, taking mostly live sardinas and hoochies. Fish are close in, 2-3 miles off the beaches, from La Ribera to Los Frailes.

Tuna - as many as you want, with fish to 70lbs (mostly 10-15lbs) mixed in the same area as the dorado, about 2 miles off the beach from La Ribera to Los Frailes. with hoochies and live sardinas working best.

Wahoo - starting to bite, with fish about 2 miles off the beaches, from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, taking mostly dark rapalas.

Inshore - the exceptional bite continues, with roosterfish to 40lbs biting off all beaches, taking live sardinas and mullet. Pompano and jacks mixed in, also biting well.

Water - warmer water temp 81-82deg throughout the bay, with clear flat conditions - great fishing weather.

Air - Summer is here, with warm highs in the low 90's, morning lows around 70.

Overview - the active bite has moved much closer in, with marlin, sailfish, dorado & tuna all within 2-6 miles off the beaches, from La Ribera south to Los Frailes. Lots of strong live bait. The great inshore bite continues, with as many roosterfish as we've ever seen, with jacks and pompano mixed in.

Billfish - lots of striped marlin with sailfish mixed in (ave. 2/boat) much closer in, with darker lures working best, especially green/black.

Dorado - big bulls, the bite is even better this week, with fish to 45lbs taking mostly lures. Fish are mixed in with the marlin, with some fish taking live bait.

Tuna - a wide open bite the last several days, with mostly football-sized fish about 2 miles off the beach from Cabo Pulmo to Los Frailes. Many boats limiting out, with hoochies and live sardinas working best.

Wahoo - several wahoo were taken this week, taking lures in the same area as the marlin.

Inshore - an exceptional bite, with as many roosterfish as we've ever seen, with all sized fish biting off all beaches. Pompano and jacks mixed in, also biting well.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Water - warm water temp 78-80deg throughout the bay.

Air - Summer is here, with warm highs in the low 90's, morning lows around 70. Windy outside most of the week, with much calmer conditions inshore.

Overview - with the windy conditions offshore, most anglers are staying inside and catching roosterfish, jack crevalle, pompano, pargo, grouper, and cabrilla. A very strong bite inshore. An improving bite outside (weather permitting), with anglers taking lots of big dorado, there's a decent billfish bite, and yellowfin tuna have returned.

Dorado - big bulls, the bite has improved this week, with fish to 40lbs taking mostly marlin lures offshore, while live bait is working better inside.

Tuna - spread throughout the bay, with some under porpoise outside, mostly inside biting lures. Not all boats getting bit, but the bite is improving, with yellowfin to 45lbs.

Billfish - very spread, with lots of tailers being sighted, but picky biters (the wind isn't helping). Most fish taken on lures.

Inshore - good fishing! Lots of pargo, a strong roosterfish bite mixed with jacks; pompano everywhere. The strong bite and calmer water have kept most boats closer to shore for the last few days.

Water - warm water temp 77-79deg off the beaches to 82deg outside throughout the bay.

Air - Summer is here, with warm highs to around 90deg, morning lows in the low 70's. calm all week with mid-day SE breezes. Nice fishing conditions prevail.

Overview - a great week for billfish, with the warm water holding fish in the area. Striped marlin, sailfish, and dorado outside, while the inshore bite continued with pargo, pompano, jacks and roosterfish biting well. Lots of good bait (mackerel and sardinas) throughout the bay.

Billfish - the bite remains mostly north, with larger than usual (ave 150lbs) striped marlin and sailfish biting from Punta Pescadero to the 88 Spot, off Cerralvo Island, taking both live mackerel and lures. An amazing number of tailers being sighted, and biting better this week, averaging more than 2 per boat.

Dorado - a continuation of the last couple of weeks, with some very nice fish (ave. 1 per boat) in the 30-40lb range mixed in with the marlin, taking trolled marlin lures.

Inshore - kayak fishermen doing well right in front of Leonero, with lots of pargo, jacks, and pompano keeping the rods bent. Roosterfish to 35-40lbs are biting from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking mostly live sardinas.

Fishermen of the Week -
The Roy Clark group, fishing 4 days on 4 super cruisers, released 50 striped marlin and 6 sailfish to 150lbs, and took 24 dorado to 38lbs.

Happy Mother's Day Weekend!

Water - warm water temp 77-80deg throughout the bay.

Air - Warm highs to the mid 80's, morning lows near 70. calm all week with mid-day SE breezes. Nice fishing conditions continue.

Overview - an OK week, with the warm water holding fish in the area. Striped marlin, sailfish, and dorado outside, while the inshore bite continued with pargo, pompano, jacks and roosterfish biting well. Lots of good bait (mackerel and sardinas) throughout the bay.

Billfish - the bite has shifted north, following the surge of warmer water moving up the gulf. Striped marlin and sailfish are biting from La Ribera north to the 88 Spot, off Cerralvo Island, taking live mackerel and lures. An amazing number of tailers being sighted, but a very erratic bite. On Friday one panga released 3 sails and 2 marlin, while other boats in the same area got nothing. Overall, averaging about 1 per boat.

Dorado - some very nice fish (ave. 1 per boat) in the 30-40lb range mixed in with the marlin, taking live mackerel and lures.

Inshore - kayak fishermen doing well right in front of Leonero, with lots of pargo, jacks, pompano and black skipjack keeping the rods bent. Roosterfish to 35lbs are biting from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking live sardinas.

Water - much warmer water temp 77-79deg throughout the bay.

Air - Warm highs to the mid 80's, morning lows in the 60's. calm all week with early morning marine layer most days burning off by mid-morning. Nice fishing conditions.

Overview - a better week, with much warmer water picking up the bite. Striped marlin, sailfish, and dorado outside, while the inshore bite continued with pargo, jacks and roosterfish biting well. Lots of good bait (mackerel and sardinas) throughout the bay.

Billfish - striped marlin with some sails have moved closer in, concentrated 5-10 miles out, from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking mostly live mackerel. Lots of tailers being sighted, biting better, averaging 2 per boat.

Dorado - some very nice fish (ave. 1 per boat) in the 30-40lb range mixed in with the marlin, taking live mackerel and lures.

Inshore - kayak fishermen doing well right in front of Leonero, with lots of small pargo and jacks keeping the rods bent. Roosterfish to 30lbs are biting from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking live sardinas.

Water - steady water temp 71-73deg throughout the bay.

Air - Warm highs to the mid 80's, morning lows in the 60's. 3 days of late-season north winds late in the week.

Overview - a tough week, with unusually late north wind shutting down departures for 3 days. Otherwise about the same as last week, with striped marlin, sailfish, some tuna and dorado outside, while a strong inshore bite continued on the calm days with pargo, sierra, roosterfish and pompano aggressively biting. Lots of good bait throughout the bay.

Billfish - striped marlin with some sails mixed in are concentrated 10-20 miles out, from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait and some on tuna lures. Still picky biters with lots of tailers being sighted.

Tuna - about the same as last week: fish to 30lbs are under porpoise, concentrated about 20 miles out, from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait, hoochies and cedar plugs. A very erratic bite as the schools move up and down, with some boats scoring big, while other boats in the same area get nothing.

Dorado - some fish to 40lbs mixed in with the marlin and tuna, taking mostly live bait.

Inshore - kayak fishermen doing well on the calm days. Roosterfish to 30lbs are biting from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking live sardinas. Sierra, pargo, jacks and pompano also biting well.

Water - a bit cooler this week with water 71-73deg throughout the bay.

Air - Warm highs to the mid 80's, nice mornings in the 60's. Generally good fishing conditions most of the week with not much wind.

Overview - an OK week, with a slower bite outside, but a strong inshore bite made up for it. Striped marlin, sailfish, tuna and some dorado outside, while a hot inshore bite developed with black skipjack, pargo, sierra, roosterfish and pompano aggressively biting. Lots of good bait throughout the bay.

Billfish - striped marlin with some sails mixed in are concentrated 10-15 miles out, from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait and some on tuna lures. Picky biters, with lots of tailers, averaging about 1 per boat.

Tuna - fish to 30lbs are under porpoise, concentrated about 20 miles out, from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, taking live bait, hoochies and cedar plugs. A very erratic bite as the schools move up and down, with some boats scoring big, while other boats in the same area get nothing.

Dorado - some fish to 30lbs mixed in with the marlin and tuna, taking mostly live bait.

Inshore - Dennis Spike and his kayak fishermen report a strong inshore bite, with the highlight a hot bite for black skipjack to 20lbs at the tuna hole off Buena Vista, with the best results coming from yo-yoing chrome jigs off the bottom. Roosterfish to 30lbs have started biting from La Ribera to the lighthouse, taking live sardinas. Sierra, pargo, jacks and pompano also biting well.

Happy Easter!

Water - warmer water this week, 73deg off the beaches, up to 78deg outside.

Air - Warmer highs to the mid 80's, nice mornings in the 60's. a couple of windy days, but boats fished all week.

Overview - a good week, with striped marlin and tuna topping the fare. Some dorado and a strong inshore bite for sierra and pargo rounded out the week. Wahoo have started to bite. The bay is teeming with bait, lots of large strong sardinas, caballitos, and huge schools of lolly-pop sized squid are everywhere.

Marlin - striped marlin have moved closer in, about 10 miles out, very spread throughout the bay, taking live bait and some on tuna lures. Picky biters, with lots of tailers, averaging about 1 per boat.

Tuna - the plentiful bait has brought in huge schools of yellowfin, under porpoise, very spread. Fish to 60lbs (ave. 15-20lbs) are taking live bait, hoochies and cedar plugs. A very erratic bite as the schools move up and down, with some boats limiting out within a couple of hours, while other boats in the same area get nothing.

Dorado - some fish to 30lbs mixed in with the marlin and tuna, taking mostly live bait.

Wahoo - several wahoo came in this week, mostly south, from Cabo Pulmo to Los Frailes.

Inshore - Kayak fishermen doing well, taking pargo, sierra and jacks. Roosterfish being sighted, but few takers.

Water - slightly cooler water this week, 70-72deg throughout the bay.

Air - Warm highs to the low 80's, nice mornings in the 60's. 3 days of north wind at midweek, with nice conditions the remainder of the week.

Overview - a so-so week, fewer fishermen, with striped marlin the bright spot. Some dorado and a strong inshore bite for sierra rounded out the week.

Marlin - striped marlin are feeding in 2 separate areas, north off the 88 spot (off Cerralvo Island) and 30 miles out from Los Frailes, taking mostly live mackerel and a few on tuna lures. Biting well, averaging 2 per boat.

Dorado - some fish to 30lbs 10-20 miles offshore from the lighthouse to Los Frailes taking live mackerel.

Inshore - no pressure as most boats continue chasing marlin. Jacks and sierra taking chrome and live sardinas.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 1, 2006

Water - warm water 72-74deg throughout the bay.

Air - Warm highs to the low 80's, nice mornings in the 60's, very pleasant spring weather. Calm conditions with boats fishing all week.

Overview - With the spread of warmer water into the bay, the bite has spread as well, with striped marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna, roosterfish and pargo all active.

Marlin - striped marlin and sailfish are feeding 20-30 miles out, from Rancho Leonero to Los Frailes, taking live mackerel and tuna lures. Biting more aggressively this week, averaging 2/boat.

Dorado - Lots of free swimmers, in the same area as the marlin, with fish 15-40lbs. (ave 20lbs) taking live sardinas, mackerel and hoochies. A steady bite, ave. 2/boat.

Tuna - some yellowfin are also mixed in with the marlin, no real size, 15-20lbs, taking hoochies, sardinas, and cedar plugs.

Inshore - no pressure as most boats continue chasing the strong bite offshore. Some jacks and sierra taking chrome, with more roosterfish each week, taking live mackerel, hoochies and sardinas. Pargo and grouper to 30lbs on the reefs off La Ribera, taking weighted live bait.
