Archived 2006 Fish Reports October - December

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: November 4, 2006

Steady water temp, 81-83deg, with mixed water conditions. Cool, calm mornings with pleasant afternoons, highs in the mid 80's. Some afternoon NE breezes, early winter conditions.

A rough week outside, but good inshore fishing.

Marlin - some stripers with a few sails mixed in, way outside, about 30 miles straight off Leonero. Fish are taking mostly live bait, with some on trolled lures.

Dorado - larger fish early in the week, both north and south. Smaller fish over the weekend, taking mostly live sardinas.

Inside - a strong bite inshore all week, with kayakers doing very well, taking dorado, roosterfish, pargo and sierra, from Leonero south to La Ribera. Most fish taken on live bait.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 28, 2006

Cooling water temp, 82-83deg, with mixed water conditions. Air temp in the mid 80's, with 3 days of north wind.

It was a tough week for fishing, as Hurricane Paul moved past the area earlier in the week, churning up the sea and leaving in its wake dirty water and rough seas. Few boat departures, but look for the bite to resume as conditions return to normal.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 21, 2006

Cooling water temp, 83-85deg, with blue water outside and clean water inside. Air temp near 90, with some afternoon breezes. A couple of days of moderate north wind during the week.

The falling water temp has taken a toll on the bite, with few marlin, some dorado, but a good inshore bite for roosters, small dorado, some sierra and pargo. Tuna have moved all the way down to the Gordo Banks, but most boats making the long ride are scoring well. Still lots of good bait (sardinas and mackerel) in the water.

Marlin - the bite shut down earlier in the week, with no pressure the last few days as most boats are going south to chase tuna.

Tuna - tuna are way south, a long boat ride to the Gordo Banks. A more consistent bite, with most boats limiting out with fish 20-30lbs taking mostly live bait.

Dorado - an off week for dorado, with some fish from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, about 4 miles out. Fish 15-30lbs taking mostly live sardinas.

Inshore - Kayak fishermen are taking some small dorado near the beaches off Leonero, with pargo and jacks biting on the reefs off La Ribera, with roosterfish 10-25lbs and some sierra biting from La Ribera to the lighthouse.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 14, 2006

The last couple of days saw a small dip in the water temp, 85-88deg, but it didn't slow down the bite, with blue water outside and clean water inside. Air temp around 90, with some afternoon breezes.

The overall bite remains strong, with a hot marlin bite close in and more dorado. Tuna have moved way south. Roosterfish, pargo and amberjack biting off area beaches, with lots of good bait (sardinas and mackerel) in the water.

Marlin - a strong bite close in, about 2 miles off the beach at La Ribera. Lots of stripers with a few sailfish mixed in. Fish are taking mostly live mackerel, with the overall average about 2 releases per boat.

Tuna - tuna have moved way south, a long boat ride to the Gordo Banks. An iffy bite, with some boats limiting out, while others getting zip. Fish 20-40lbs taking mostly live bait.

Dorado - concentrated from the lighthouse to Cabo Pulmo, about 4 miles out. Fish 15-30lbs taking mostly live sardinas. A hit-or-miss situation, with some boats taking 3-5 fish per day, while others in the same area getting nothing.

Inshore - pargo and amberjack biting on the reefs off La Ribera, with roosterfish 10-20lbs biting well from La Ribera to the lighthouse.

Fishermen of the Week - Terry English and friends of Windsor, CO, while fishing 3 days in cruisers, took or released limits of striped marlin & dorado, as well as numerous tuna.

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: October 7, 2006

Water - Warmer water temp 87-90deg, with blue water outside and clean water inside with some debris still in the water.
Air - Air temp in the low to mid 90's, a bit warm for this late in the summer, but still very pleasant.

The week saw a rebound in the great fishing we've been enjoying all summer, with a wide open marlin bite, more tuna, dorado spread, with wahoo starting to bite again. Roosterfish and amberjack biting off area beaches, with lots of good bait in the water.

Marlin - a hot bite has developed north off Cerralvo Island, with striped marlin (some blues and sailfish mixed in) taking both lures and live bait. Boats targeting billfish are averaging 3-5 releases per boat.

Tuna - a stronger bite this week, (averaging 2-3 fish per boat) with fish 20-60lbs taking mostly live bait, from Cabo Pulmo to White Cliffs, 3-4 miles offshore, under porpoise. Tuna also sighted north off Cerralvo, but not biting there yet.

Dorado - a steady bite, with fish 20-40lbs spread throughout the bay, mostly south, from Punta Colorada to Cabo Pulmo, 2-4 miles out. Fish are taking mostly live sardinas.

Wahoo - the end of the week saw a number of wahoo come in, with fish 30-70lbs taking trolled lures, from Las Barracas to Cabo Pulmo, 2-3 miles out.

Inshore - the roosterfish bite is getting better, with fish to 30lbs biting from La Ribera south to Las Barracas. Amberjack to 50lbs biting on the reefs off La Ribera.

Fishermen of the Week - Joe Crosby and Gary Conoway of Anaheim, CA, while fishing 9 days exclusively for billfish, released 4-5 marlin per day - nice job!
