Water: Clear, flat, afternoon breezes. Warming to 80-83

Air: Warming, highs in the 90's.

The fishing this week was very similar to last week. Striped marlin are thick throughout the bay and biting aggressively. The dorado bite has improved with quality bulls being taken. The tuna bite is inconsistent. Inshore is really wide open with almost every inshore species biting both lures and live bait. Flyfishermen are doing extremely well, releasing a number of gallos over 40#s.

Striped marlin: The bite starts three miles off, directly in front of the hotel. Lots of tailers, the marlin have been our most consistent gamefish, all this season. This has been one of the best striper years that I can recall. Lots of tailers, but most fish taken on blind strikes. Red and squid colored lures working best. Most boats releasing at least one. Lots of multiples.

Dorado: Improved this week. The usual bulls taken on marlin lures, to 50#s. Quite a few in the 40#s. Most boats taking at least two. Smaller schooling dorado starting to show inside. As the water warms the dodo fishing should improve.

Yellowfin: A long boat ride. The tuna are way outside, 40-50 miles, under the porpoise. A few boats having luck, but not a consistent enough bite for the long ride.

Inshore: Really wide open again this week. Almost all inshore species are biting. Roosterfish, pargo, pompano, cabrilla, jacks, even some sierra. South beachs are best, as most of the sardines are south. Lots of gallos in the 40#s. Jeff DeBrown, flyfishing in two days caught and released four roosters over 40#s. We've had three or four over 50#s. The pompano are big to 15#s. Really extraordinary inshore fishing!

Thanks, John

Water- Cooler 78, some midday breezes

Air- Hotter this week, highs in the 90's

It was almost the same as last week, with improved inshore fishing. Lots of stripers everywhere. Dorado and yellowfin are hit and miss. Inshore fishing is as good as it gets with big gallos, pargo, and pompano biting aggressively. Kayakers, light line, and flyfishermen are all scoring big.

Striped marlin - Lots around, very spread, picky biters. All anglers scoring at least one per day. Mixed with a few sails and blue marlin. Taking half bait / half trolled lures. Literally tailers everywhere you look.

Dorado - Bigger this week to 60#. Most taken on marlin lures. Bulls mixed with billfish. One per boat average.

Yellowfin - 25 to 50 miles offshore, under porpoise. In and out all week. About half the boats targeting tuna scoring daily. Avg. fish 15; largest 45#. Live sardines working best.

Inshore - Really wide open! As many gallos taken, as anglers have bait. Bigger roosters to 50#. Mixed with large pompano to 15#. Lots of pargo to 20#. Chunked mullet working well for pompano and pargo. Live sardine and mullet best for roosters. Fly fishermen, kayakers, and light line fishermen are really killing the fish. The gallos have really been suckers for flies all week.

Anglers of the week-
Steve Balcav, Tom Ciavaglia, from Rhode Island. Two days Panga flyfishing. Caught and released 30 roosters to 60#, 4 ladyfish to 16#, 6 pompano to 18#, 5 Pargo to 22#. All on the fly.

Thanks...
John

Air: Beautiful cool weather all week max mid 80's

Water: Calm seas with brisk midday breezes every day.
Slightly cooler water this week which did no harm to the bite.

Bait remains a small problem with sardinas available far to the south, thus more or less forcing the fleet to head that direction.

OFFSHORE

Solid striped marlin bite continues with fish spread out from the 88 in the north all the way down to Los Frailes, some places as close as 4 miles out.

One boat had a tripple yesterday to the north and managed to land 2.

Tuna were caught in good numbers ,footballers to 35 # under porpoise about 25 miles out from Cabo Pulmo. Fish hitting pretty much everything. (bait; hoochies and cedar plugs)

Still a very slow Dorado bite with odd fish in the 30 to 40 # range.

INSHORE

Red hot Rooster bite continues all along the beach from Leonero to Los Frailes. Fish from 5 to 50 #.

Plenty of snapper, grouper and Pompano on the reefs all over. Buena Vista was best area this week.

Water: Cooler this week. 75-78. Clear, flat

Air: Very pleasant spring weather. Highs in the 80's.

A better week. A very consistent striped marlin bite, wide open inshore fishing and quality yellowfin early in the week. Lots of sardines in the area is helping. Roosterfish and big pompano really banging inside.

Striped marlin: At least one per boat per day with lots of multiple releases. Two to six miles directly in front of the hotel. Jumpers everywhere you look. Blue and white lures working best. Lots of flying fish around and dead flying fish is very effective, almost guaranteed.

Yellowfin: Off Punta Pescadero. Fifteen to twenty-five miles off, under very fast moving smaller pods of porpoise. Some quality fish to forty-five pounds. Hoochies best, as it’s almost impossible to get ahead of the schools to drop live bait. Sunday to Thursday was best, slowing the last couple of days. Anglers finding the tuna are limiting.

Inshore: Wide open. Quality roosterfish to forty pounds, big pompano to ten pounds, lots of jacks and some big pargo. The huge schools of sardines have really improved the fishing. The gallos and pompano are mixed with the sardines. Live sardine or mullet best. The average rooster is six to ten pounds.

Angler of the week:
Bart Hall and Mike Lum. Four days super panga fishing on Ole, all inshore. The catch improved daily. Unlimited gallos until the bait ran out. Pompano to eight pounds. A wide variety of inshore species.

Thanks,
John

Week Ending May 20, 2007

Water: Flat, clear, warming: 78-80 degrees

Air: Starting summer. Highs in the low 90 s. Cooler mornings and
evenings.

A good, steady marlin bite and strong inshore fishing, on the east cape this week. We are averaging one striper per boat. Inshore has picked up with roosters, pompano, and pargo all taking live sardines. Sardines available south of the hotel in the hottest inshore areas. The marlin are north off Pescadero.

Striped marlin: Best off Pta. Pescadero. Three to eleven miles offshore. About half on live bait and half on lures. Lots of boats releasing 2 or 3 a day. Overall average around one per boat. Petrolero colored lures have been deadly this week.

Inshore: Larger roosterfish this week. Average 7 or 8 #, much larger gallos to 50 # taken as well. Pompano are thick on southern beaches. Mostly African pompano to 7 #s. Anglers releasing countless fish daily. Pargo are biting as well. The action is always around the sardine schools.

Angler of the week:
Floyd Dennison of Mission Viejo, Ca. Two days on a cruiser, one day super panga. Seven stripers released. Two dorado to 32#. Five roosters released to 25#. Countless pompano released.

Thanks... John

Very good fishing this week. Striped marlin, dorado, yellowfin, and
roosterfish are all biting. Daily limits of quality yellowfin under
scattered schools of porpoise all week. At least one marlin per day per boat
and lots of multiples. Big dorado mixed with marlin, taken all week. The
gallos are feeding aggressively inshore. Big schools of sardine are showing
up; helping inshore, and providing dynamite bait for yellowfin and stripers,
outside.

Yellowfin: : Large schools ten to thirty-five miles directly off the hotel. Football size to fifty pounds. Anglers targeting tuna are limiting. Larger fish are in the more distant schools. All under large, spread schools of porpise. Fast trolled hoochies and cedar plugs or live sardine best.

Striped Marlin : Closer inshore than the tuna. Three to twenty miles offshore. A very consistent bite with all boats releasing at least one striper, and many boats with multiples. Half taken on lures an half on sardine and caballito.

Dorado: Mixed with both the marlin and the tuna. Big fish taken on live bait and marlin lures. A couple of fifty pounders this week. Better than last week. we re still looking for the wide open dorado bite that normally starts in June, July.

Inshore: The roosterfish bite is on. Very light pressure, as most anglers are targeting tuna outside. Lots of smaller gallos from two to five pounds. Larger roosters south of the light house to twenty-five pounds. Live mullet best, sardines working .

Angler of the Week:
Frank Swanee group. Salinas Ca. Two days on a cruiser. Released five striped marlin. Limits yellowfin both days. Largest fourty- seven and fourty-two pounds. Four dorado to thirty-six pounds.

Thanks,
John
