26-12-08

Water- 75 degrees, flat, calm

Air- Beautiful weather this week with highs in the low 80's

The hotel has been sending out a couple of boats per day. We are enjoying very pleasant weather with flat seas. All anglers have been taking limits of quality Dorado from ten to forty pounds. The schools are from five to ten miles directly off the hotel. Small bright hoochies and Sardine are both working. The inshore fishing has also been very good with Sierra taking smaller bright lures, off all rocky areas. Smaller Roosterfish mixed with Jack Crevalle are chasing bait in front of the ranch. A few Pargo and quite a few Grouper are being taken off the La Ribera bank.

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

John

Week Ending December 20, 2008

Water- 75 clear and flat most of the week

Air- Nice days, cooler evenings

The E. Cape has had decent weather all week. We are enjoying better than normal fishing with anglers taking limits of Dorado and a very good Striped Marlin bite. Inshore fishing has also been good this week with Sierra, Amberjack, Pargo, and Roosterfish biting along most rocky beaches. Very light fishing pressure all week, the hotel has been sending out two or three boats per day.

Dorado- A very strong bite this week with limits for all anglers. Schooling Dorado in the ten to thirty-five pound range are spread two to ten miles directly off the hotel. About half taken on lures the other on live Sardine and frozen Ballyhoo.

Striped Marlin- Lots of tailers in the same areas as the dorado. Taking both lures and Ballyhoo. Most boats releasing at least one per day.

Inshore- As usual this time of year the Sierra are plentiful. They are taking bright hoochies. Roosterfish mixed with Jacks are being taken off the beach right in front of the hotel. Grouper and Pargo are taking iron off the bottom.

Water.. Flat monday thru Friday, windy last two days. 76 degrees and cooling.\

Air.. Pleasant, highs in the 80's. Cool mornings.

We are sending out two or three boats a day. Most anglers are staying fairly close to shore. We had beautiful calm weather all week, Saturday the North wind kicked up. The fishing has been decent with a very consistent Dorado bite close inshore. A few Wahoo have been taken just off the light house. Both Striped Marlin and Sailfish are in the area but are very line shy. Inshore the fishing is very good with lots of Sierra, Roosterfish and large schools of Jack Cravelle.

Dorado- Lots around in the five to thirty pound range. The schools are very spread from Punta Pescadero south to Frailles. From a couple of hundred yards off the beach to five miles. Limits all anglers. Live sardine and most trolled lures working.

Wahoo- We had seven Wahoo come in over the week. No real size, from twenty to forty pounds. All the wahoo were taken within a half mile of Punta Arena, and all on live Mackerel and Sardine.

Billfish- Most anglers are opting to stay close inshore. Both Sailfish and Striped Marlin are around, a few tailers, but very line shy.

Inshore- Very good inshore fishing. Sierra are thick in front of the hotel. Taking all smaller lures. Early in the morning and evenings best. Roosterfish in the five to sixty pound class are biting aggressively. The Gallos are mixed with huge schools of Jack Cravelle feeding along all beaches.

Thanks...John

I am on my way to Mag Bay for five days of fishing. I will send a report on the trip next week...John

Water- 83-86 very warm for Nov., some midweek wind.

Air- Cooling, very pleasant fall weather.

A slower week fishing. The Yellow fin are still outside under the porpoise, they are however, very picky biters. Anglers are seeing lots of jumping tuna in the 50 to 100 pound class, but catching very few fish. A good consistent bill fish bite with about an equal number of Sailfish and Striped Marlin released. The bill fish are very spread, but most anglers fishing outside are releasing at least one per day. There are lots of smaller Dorado in the five to twenty pound range south off Frailles and under a dead whale about ten miles offshore. Inshore fishing has been good with Roosterfish active all week on most beachs.

I will send a report and photos next week of our Mag Bay trip.

Thanks...John

Week Ending November 1, 2008

Water- Cooling, 80-83 degrees, flat most of the week, with some North wind yesterday.

Air- Unusually hot this week, in the high 90's.

A very good fishing week. Big Yellow fin, lots of Sailfish and Striped Marlin, limits of Dorado, and excellent inshore fishing, made for one of the best weeks of the year.
The Tuna are under Porpoise and a boat ride outside, between ten and forty miles out. There have been at least three separate schools producing fish all week. Big quality fish between 30 and 120 pounds were taken daily, limits for all anglers finding the schools. Sailfish and Striped Marlin are abundant and very spread across the E. Cape. Our fleet is averaging at least one per boat per day. A couple of bigger bull Dorado have been taking marlin lures every day. Lots of smaller Dorado in the ten to twenty pound range have been schooling South of Frailles, producing limits for all anglers. Humboldt Squid are readily available right in front of the hotel forty to seventy pounders are the norm. The Roosterfish have been very active along the beaches, with all anglers targeting Gallos, releasing fish to fifty pounds. Quite a week!

Yellowfin- Large schools of Porpoise are holding tuna, averaging forty pounds with some over 100. Jack Nilsen and Del Marsh from Accurate Reels and Calstar Rods, caught a 115 # Yellowfin, and limits of tuna in the 30#to 80# range. The tuna are taking about half lures and half live Sardine. There are three separate schools producing tuna, from ten to forty miles offshore.

Billfish- Sailfish and Striped Marlin, are very spread, all boats fishing outside are releasing at least one per day. We had three Blues released this week, with a number of very big fish farmed.

Dorado- Larger Bulls taken outside mostly on Marlin lures. Very large schools of Dorado are producing limits for anglers south of Frailles. Fish in the 10 to 25# range are taking flies, live sardine, and chunk squid.

Inshore- Big Roosterfish this week, with all anglers fishing inside, releasing Gallos to fifty pounds. The fly fishermen are releasing five to ten daily. Flies, live Sardine and Mullet all working.

Humboldt Squid- An unlimited supply of Squid right in front of the hotel, from thirty to seventy pounds.

Anglers of the week-

Jack Nilsen and Del Marsh fishing on the Jenn Wren with Mark Rayor.
Took limits of Yellowfin from 30 to 115 pounds, two out of three days fishing.
Dorado from ten to twenty pounds.
Three Sailfish released.

Thanks...John

Week Ending October 17, 2008

Water- 81-83 breezy afternoons

Air- Cooling, highs in the 80's

The fishing was mediocre this week. The combination of an early north wind and the low pressure created by Hurricane Norbert slowed the fishing early this week. As the week progressed the fishing improved. Sailfish, Striped Marlin, and Dorado were being taken in limited numbers. Yesterday the fishing really improved with quality tuna from 30 to 81 pounds taken under Porpoise 40 to 45 miles offshore. Inshore fishing has been good with Roosterfish, Pargo and big Grouper taken daily.

Yellowfin Tuna- Pete Gray from Lets Talk Hookup, caught Yellowfin under Porpoise 44 miles out. The average fish were in the 40 pound range with the largest 81#. The tuna are taking bright hoochies, cedar plugs and live Sardine.

Dorado- Our fleet boats are averaging two or three per day in the five to twenty pound range. The Dorado are biting from the hotel south to Frailles, and taking almost exclusively lures.

Sailfish and Striped Marlin- Anglers targeting billfish are taking a longer boat ride, but catching both Sails and Stripers. The billfish are from fifteen to forty-five miles off shore, directly off the ranch.

Thanks...

John

Week Ending October 2, 2008

Water: Flat, light afternoon winds. 82 to 85 degrees.

Air: Warmer this week, not much wind, highs in the 90's.

The good fishing continues. Ranch anglers have been spending more time targeting billfish this week. A very consistent Sailfish bite mixed with some quality Blues, made for strong billfishing all week. One boat caught and released 5 Sails in a day. The ranch fleet also released three Blues in the 300 pound class. The stationary school of Yellowfin off Frailles continues to produce limits of tuna, from footballs to 30#'s. We had a couple of slow Yellowfin days this week. There are lots of smaller schooling Dorado in the 3 to 10 # range, all anglers are limiting. A couple of Wahoo in the sixty pound class were taken far south off the white cliffs. Most hotel boats are jigging and boating Humbolt squid in the 20 to 60 pound range off La Ribera.

Humbolt Squid- Big squid from 20 to 60 pounds, most boats are picking up one or two for bait.

Billfish- Sailfish are abundant and very spread. Boats targeting billfish are releasing at least one Sail per day, with one releasing five. We released three Blues in the 300 pound range this week. The Sailfish are taking both lures and Sardine, the Blues are blindstriking Squid colored lures.

Yellowfin- The same school on the same spot as last week, four miles off Frailles. Not as consistent as last week. Live Sardine mixed with Squid Chunks and chum are the best bait. The fish are footballs to 30#'s with a couple of ninety pounders taken.

Dorado- Lots of smaller schooling Dorado. Very spread, mostly closer inside, two to four miles off the beach. Anglers catching and releasing lots of smaller fish in the 2 to 10 # range. Huge schools coming up to stationary fleet boats, that are chumming with Squid. Live Sardine and Squid chunks working best.

Inshore- Very light pressure as most anglers fishing outside. Big Roosters in the fifty pound class are feeding directly off the hotel.

Thanks....John
