Rancho Leonero Resort
Archived Fish Reports
2009 January through March

Week Ending March 28, 2009

Water- Some wind early week. Mostly clear, flat 71-75 degrees.

Air- Pleasant spring weather, highs in the low 80's.

A very good fishing week. Similar to last week with Striped Marlin adding to the action. Roosterfish mixed with Jacks feeding on Sardine inshore are still abundant. Limits of Dorado daily. The warmer than normal water has really helped, in the last month we have had very consistent fishing, both inside and outside.

Striped Marlin- Lots of tailers, some very sleepy Marlin in the Cortez. Anglers are seeing dozens daily. One in ten are taking live Mackerel. All boats targeting billfish are releasing at least one per day. From within one mile of shore too fifteen miles off. There is a temperature break from six to ten miles off that is holding most of the Stripers and Dorado.

Dorado- Limits for all anglers daily. Not quite as big as last week. The fish are bunching up on any floating object. A large piece of mooring line floating off the light house has produced limits for all, taking live sardine and larger fish Mackerel. Larger Mahi being taken on the troll. The warmer water outside, from 73 to 75 degrees is holding most of the gamefish. To 30 #'s. Average 7 or 8#'s. Brighter Squid colors and Petroleros working best.

Inside- Lots of Roosterfish. The early Gallo run continues. They have been biting all winter. The warmer than normal water has made for a very early season. Large schools of Jacks and Roosters feeding on schools of Sardine, they are especially thick north of Pescadero.

Week Ending March 21, 2009

Water- Much warmer than normal, 71-75 degrees. Clear, flat, beautiful water.

Air- Warming Highs in the low 80's. Spring has arrived.

Very good fishing, excellent weather, rapidly warming water. The Dorado bite has been very consistent with bigger fish this week. All anglers targeting Mahi are limiting. Striped Marlin have returned. Large Roosterfish are taking flies, cast lures and live bait. As usual lots of Sierra close to shore. The water in the Cortez is a good 5 degrees warmer than normal.

Dorado- Larger fish this week. All keepers 15-35 pounds. Very spread from Muertos to Frailles, six to twenty miles offshore in 72 to 75 degree water. Almost all taken on lures, a few trailers on live mackerel. The Dorado are feeding on squid, petrolero, bleeding mackerel, blue and white, are all working. Limits for all anglers.

Striped Marlin- A little further outside than the Dorado. Anglers targeting billfish are releasing one every other day. With the rapidly warming water, I expect the Marlin bite to really open up this week. Most taken on live mackerel.

Roosterfish- Good Gallo fishing for so early in the season. Big hungry Roosters to 45 pounds are taking flies, cast lures, and live sardine. They are concentrated North from Cardonnal to Muertos Bay. Fly fishermen are releasing six to ten a day, the largest in the fourty pound range.

Sierra and Skipjack- The Sierra have moved North into the same areas as the Gallos. Some very large Sierra taken this week to 12 pounds. Lots of Skipjack within a couple of miles of the beach.

Spring has arrived early. With this warmer than usual water, I am expecting good fishing for the next couple of months.

John

Week Ending March 15, 2009

Water- 70-73 degrees. Warmer than normal, calm, nice weather for the last two weeks.

Air- Cool mornings, highs in the low 80's.

Very good inshore fishing continues this week. Sierra, Roosterfish, Yellow tail, Jack Crevalle and Skipjack all abundant and taking baits on most E. Cape beaches. Dorado have been biting consistently all week with limits for all anglers. The water is three or four degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.

Sierra- Very concentrated north of Pescadero, especially around Cardonnal. Boats driving away from the schools after anglers taking 20 to 30 in an hour or two. Good size Sierra to six pounds. Taking darker Hoochies and Sardine.

Roosterfish- The Gallo fishing has been good all winter, the warmer than normal water has kept them biting. Lots of five to ten pounders being released daily. Mixed with schools of Jack Crevalle. Surface lures, live Mackerel and Mullet all working.

Yellowtail- Slower than last week. Still some very big fish being taken daily from 20 to 60 pounds. Directly off the hotel south to the light house a half mile off the beach. Some taken on YoYo'ed iron off the bottom, most on slow trolled live mackerel.

Dorado- Further outside this week. Four to twenty miles offshore, both south and north. The fish are spread out with most taken on the troll. Live Mackerel and sardine working on fish trailing already hooked Dolphin. Smaller this week five to twenty pounds. Limits for all anglers.

Thanks...John

Week Ending March 8, 2009

Water: Clear, flat all week. Warming, 68-73 degrees.

Air: Pleasant early spring weather. Highs in the low 80's.

Excellent fishing this week. A very strong Dorado bite, Marlin are in early, and inshore fishing is very good with Roosterfish, Sierra and Yellowtail all taking baits inside. Lots and lots of quality Dorado to fifty pounds this week, A dead Sea Lion floating off Las Arenas light house is holding limitless Dorado from ten to forty five pounds. Lots of Striped marlin tailing South of the light house in warmer water. Yellowtail from twenty to fifty pounds are being taken right off the front of the hotel. Roosterfish and Sierra are active close to the beach.

Dorado- Fly fishermen off of two ranch pangas yesterday, released fifty Dorado from ten to forty-five pounds. A dead floating Sea lion is holding a huge school of DoDo's, literally as many as anglers arms can take. Any lure or bait is working.

Striped Marlin- From the light house south in warmer 70 degree plus water. Lots of tailers, most taking darker trolled lures. Angler targeting billfish are catching one or two per day.

Yellowtail- Directly off the hotel. The best bait is Mackerel. Iron jigged off the bottom also working. Fish from twenty to fifty pounds are being taken. Last year we enjoyed a full month of wide open yellowtail fishing, with any luck, this year will be a repeat.

Inside- Roosterfish have arrived early this year. For the last month we have enjoyed a very good Gallo bite in all rocky areas throughout the East cape. As usual for this time of year lots of Sierra on the reefs in front of the hotel.

Thanks...John

Week Ending February 28, 2009

Water: 67-70 Nice days mixed with afternoon winds.

Air: Warm, highs in the low 80's.

Some very good inshore fishing and a consistent Dorado bite this week. The Cortez was fishable all week, we had medium north winds a couple of afternoons. Very good Roosterfish action, very early, mixed with lots of jacks. Large mixed schools feeding aggressively along E. Cape beachs. There are lots of Sierra directly off the hotel.
Quality Dorado are being taken off Los Frailles about three to four miles offshore on a five degree warmer temp. break.

Inshore- Very visual fishing. Fishermen finding a high spot and sighting feeding schools of gallos and jacks are doing well. Anglers are using bait that has been chased up on the beach, top water cast lures, and squid. Some Roosters to 35#. Early in the morning and evenings are best for taking Sierra.

Dorado- Big Dorado to 45#. On the warm water break off Los Frailles. Two or three quality fish per day per boat. Live Mackerel, Sardine, Rapalas working well.

Striped Marlin- A couple released this week. Anglers spotting tailers on the same water break off Frailles.

Thanks..John

Quick Update, February 15, 2009

Ranch anglers fishing directly off the hotel yesterday caught Yellowtail from 25 to 50#'s. Last year at the end of February early March we had a wide open bite on quality Yellowtail to 60#'s. It looks like a repeat of last year!

John

Week Ending February 14, 2009

Water: 68-71 degrees. Calm mornings with afternoon breezes.

Air: Highs in the low 80's. Afternoon light winds.

Some very good fishing this week. The hotel has been sending out two or three boats per day, with all boats doing well. A strong inshore bite with Sierra, Pargo, Bonito, and some very large Jacks are all biting aggressively. A little further outside and south off Frailles, Dorado and Striped Marlin are taking trolled lures. For the last week we have had calm mornings with afternoon winds out of the South East.

Dorado- Most taken on the troll, four to seven miles off Los Frailles. Some quality fish from twenty to thirty five pounds. The Dorado are spread with the occasional strike, hotel boats averaging three or four per day. Bright Hoochies and Tuna clones working best.

Striped Marlin- Tailers in the same areas as the Dorado. Half of the hotel boats are releasing Marlin daily. All taken on lures.

Bonito and Amberjack- Most anglers enjoying wide open bite on big Amberjack in the thirty to forty pound class mixed with Bonito. The big Jacks are being taken just off the Las Arenas Light House on the first drop off. Cast iron and Rapalas working well.

Inshore- Sierra and Pargo mixed with smaller Jack Crevalle are being taken by shore fishermen and kayakers right off the hotel. Lots of Bonito being taken off the third reef. Very strong inshore fishing, especially early in the morning.

Thanks...John

Week Ending January 04, 2009

Water 70-71 degrees flat for the last five days

Air Overcast with mixed sun, cool evenings

Most of the ranch boats are staying within five miles of the shore. We are sending one or two boats out daily, with very light fishing pressure. It was windy Sunday and Monday with calmer seas from Tuesday on. Most of the boats are fishing the reefs close inshore for Sierra, or a little further outside for Dorado. Quite a few Striped Marlin within a couple of miles of the beach, lots of tailers.

Sierra- The cooler water has really improved the Sierra bite. Right in front of the hotel, limits of two to six pounders, with some anglers releasing as many as fifty. Trolled Hoochies and small Rapalas working well. Taking flies as well, a wide open bite.

Dorado- Nice fish, in the five to thirty five pound range. Very close, between the hotel and Punta Colrado one to three miles off the beach schools are very spread. Taking live Sardine and smaller bright tuna clones. This time of the year with light fishing pressure the Dorado are staying on top. Limits all anglers.

Striped Marlin- Very light pressure as most anglers fishing inside. Lots of tailers from two miles out. Every other boat releasing one daily. Taking green and black trolled lures, live Mackerel and Sardine.
