Rancho Leonero Resort
Archived Fish Reports
2009 April through June

Week Ending June 14, 2009

Water- 80-83 degrees, very clear blue water, flat with afternoon breezes.

Air- Warming highs in the low 90's.

A good week! Both inside and outside the fishing has been strong. Outside picked up with huge Dorado taken daily. Yellowfin Tuna have finally arrived. Ranch anglers released a half dozen Blue Marlin this week. A couple of Wahoo a day are showing up at the cleaning table. Inshore has been wide open as usual with lots of Roosters in the 50 plus pound range released. Big Pompano to 25 pounds are being taken daily. Very clean blue, clear, warm water, holding lots and lots of bait, has made for some outstanding fishing this week.

Yellowfin- Finally they have arrived! The biggest I saw this week was around fourty pounds. Lots of five to twenty pounders. Under the Porpise both North and South. Taking mostly fast trolled Hoochies. Live Sardine and cedar plugs working as well.

Dorado- Yesterday alone ranch anglers took six Bull dorado over fifty pounds! Limits of smaller Dorado in the five to thirty pound range for all anglers. All the fish were taken with five miles of the beach and most within two, from the hotel to the lighthouse. About half on live bait the other half taking mostly Hoochies.

Blue Marlin- I personally got spooled on a three to four hundred pounder. Hotel anglers released seven this week, from two to three hundred pounds. All blind strikes on lures, blue and white, Flying fish colors working best.

Striped Marlin- Lots around, at least one per boat per day, with as many as five released in one day. From two to thirty miles offshore. Most of the billfish taken within five miles of the beach. Most taken on lures.

Inshore- Big Roosters and Big Pompano. Ranch anglers have taken some of the biggest Pompano I have ever seen. Quite a few in the ten to twenty pound range. Pretty much a guaranteed catch. They are biting off the lighthouse, taking slow trolled sardine. Big Gallos in the 50# plus range taken daily again this week.....

Overall very good fishing!

Check out our fish fotos on the website.

Thanks...John

Week Ending June 7, 2009

Water- 80- 83 degrees. Clear flat, afternoon SE breezes.

Air- Hot for June, highs in the 90's.

Good fishing again this week. A very good strong consistent inshore bite, with improved fishing outside. Big Roosters mixed with large Jacks, again this week. The billfishing is much better than last week. The Dorado bite is improving, with larger fish taken all week. Lots of bull Dorado in the fourty pound class, two to three miles off the beach South from the lighthouse to Frailles. The Marlin are a little further outside. Lots of bait has helped keep the fish around. Large schools of Sardine and Squid are spread throughout the Cortez. The big Rooster bite has moved North from Frailles to the light house and Punta Colorado. Big Gallos in the sixty pound range mixed with big Jack Crevalle are being released daily.

Inshore- The big Roosters have moved up to the lighthouse and Punta Colorado. Most of the big Gallos are being taken on live Mullet. The smaller fish are taking sardine. All anglers are releasing dozens of fish. There are schools of big Jack Crevalle mixed in the same areas. Some quality Pargo and a few good sized Amberjack were taken in the mix this week.

Billfish- An improved billfish bite. Most anglers targeting Marlin are releasing at least one per day. The fish are not as line shy as in the past weeks. About half and half on live bait and lures. Bleeding Mackerel and Squid colors are working best. The Marlin are very spread, the best fishing is south of the hotel from three to eight miles off the beach.

Dorado- Again better fishing than last week. Larger bulls from twenty to fifty pounds are biting in the same areas as the billfish, just a little closer inside, two to four miles off. Anglers targeting Dorado are picking up two or three per day. About half on the troll and half on bait.

Thanks...John

Week Ending May 31, 2009

Water- 78-83 degrees. Flat clear with afternoon SE winds.

Air- Cooler this week. Highs in the 80's.

The very good inshore fishing continues. Big Roosters in the fifty to eighty pound class were released daily this week. Yesterday, Bart Hall of the Fred Hall Shows, released two Roosters in the 60 to 80 pound range. Outside has been more challenging, however, in the last couple of days there has been an improving bite with both Striped marlin and Dorado biting much more aggressively. There is an abundance of bait throughout out area that is really holding the fish.

Inshore- The Gallo fishing just keeps getting better. Much bigger Roosters than last week. Ranch anglers have released at least a dozen over 50 pounds this week.. Bart Hall fishing yesterday with Santos on El Guapo, released two between 60 and 80 #'s. Live Mullet is the best bait for the larger fish. The Gallos are very spread, with the Frailles area producing the really big fish. Lots of Jacks mixed with Pompano and Pargo, is really making for stellar inshore fishing.

Striped Marlin- Picky biters again this week. In the last couple of days the billfishing has improved. Almost all boats targeting Stripers are releasing at least one per day. The billlfish are close, four to eight miles off, from the hotel South to Frailles. The Stripers are taking more lures than live bait. Petrolero and green and black have been the most effective colors.

Dorado- A slower pick earlier in the week, with a much improved bite over the last couple of days. Mostly big bulls were taken on the troll, in the same areas as the billfish. Anglers targeting billfish in the last couple of days, have been picking up one or two Dorado to fourty pounds.

Bart Hall is our angler of the week. Look for pictures on our fish foto gallery, early next week.

Thanks...John

Week Ending May 24, 2009

Water- Way warmer than normal 79 to 84 degrees. Clear, flat.

Air- Highs in the low 90's, Clear.

The excellent inshore fishing continues. Outside has not been as consistent, with an on and off bite, on big Dorado and billfish. The Rooster fishing was wide open again this week, with all anglers releasing literally countless Gallos mixed with Jack Crevalle in the five to twenty five pound class. Big Pompano were also taken this week. Anglers fishing outside are spotting dozens of billfiish, but they are as line shy as they have been for the last month. Anglers targeting Marlin are averaging one per day. Most boats are picking up one or two large Dorado per day in the thirty to fourty pound range. The outside fishing has been pretty close, within ten miles straight off the hotel or South. The water in the Cortez is six to eight degrees warmer than normal.

Billfish- Striped Marlin mixed with a few Sailfish are abundant straight off the hotel and South to Pulmo. They are extremely line shy with about half taking lures and the other half live Caballito. Most are big Stripers in the 150 to 200 pound class. Anglers are spotting lots of tailers and jumpers. For every billfsih baited one is taking the bait.

Dorado- Big Dorado this week. Look on our websites fish photo gallery. Not as many as last week, but larger fish. Boats fishing outside are picking up one or two per day. Some are taking lures, most are being caught on live bait. The Dorado are being taken in the same areas as the marlin. Smaller fish are being taken from under any floating debris.

Inside- Another stellar fishing week inshore. I know I've already said it, but I do not recall better fishing inside. Lots of Roosters mixed with Jack Crevalle. Big Pompano to 15 pounds, Pargo, and a very late bite for big Sierra. Better than half of all ranch anglers are staying inside. There are lots of Sardine on most beachs really holding the fish.

Anglers of the week..

Week Ending May 18, 2009

Water- 73-77 Afternoon breezes from the ESE early in the week. Flat for the last three days. Green colder the light house South.

Weather- Cool mornings some morning fog. Clear 85 degree days.

Spotty, inconsistent fishing all week. Some very good days mixed with very slow days outside. The inside is another story, we are having one of the best Gallo years I can recall. They are mixed with large schools of big Jack Crevalle making for some wide open fishing inside. Most boats are fishing outside mornings and coming back inside early afternoons for a for guaranteed bite on the Jacks and Roosters. There is an abundance of Squid and Red Tuna Crab outside. The Dorado and Marlin are around, their just full of crab and Calamari. One day the boats will release one or two billfish and a couple of nice Dorado, the next they have no luck, and go for the action inside.

Billfish- In the warmer, cleaner, blue water, nine to fourty miles outside. Taking mostly slow trolled Ballyhoo and trolled lures. Bleeding Mackerel has been by far the best color. A very on and off bite. The billfish are feeding at night on the squid and crab.

Dorado- Same story as the billfish, not as consistent this week. Any floating object outside will normally be holding Dorado. Quite a few taken on the troll this week with trailers common taking live Sardine.

Inside- Another stellar Roosterfish week! They are mixed with large schools of fourty to fifty pound Jack Cravelle, making for wide open inshore fishing. Its not unusual for anglers to release twenty or thirty fish daily. The Jacks are big and really put up a fight, most are at least, ten minute fish. A few African Pompano in the mix along with Pargo. There are schools of bait everywhere, mostly Sardine, the fishing inside has been flawless all season.

John

Week Ending May 10, 2009

Water- 72-78 degrees, Very clear and flat.

Air- Warmer, with highs in the 90's.

Another strong fishing week on the East Cape. Schools of Squid are spread throughout the area. The calamari are holding the fish, but combined with the full moon, its produced some very line shy feeders. Striped Marlin mixed with Sailfish are abundant, anglers are sighting, sleepers, feeders, tailers and jumpers, literally by the hundreds. Ranch anglers fishing outside, are releasing at least one billfish per day. One boat released five yesterday. The Dorado are as big as I can remember, the average fish is around 25 to 30 pounds. Any floating debris or object outside is holding large schools of large Dorado. Live Sardine is working best. The biggest taken this week was 67#! Inside is still red hot with a continuing very strong Roosterfish bite. There are large schools of Sardine along most E. Cape beachs, keeping all anglers in bait, and holding the Roosters. Every week the Gallos are getting a little bigger, released thirty pounders are common. Big Pompano are still being taken on drift fished live Sardine, off the light house. There is so much bait around, Squid, Tuna crabs, Sardine, Mackerel, that the fish are bound to stick around for the next couple of weeks.

Billfish- Lots and lots around. Very spread from one to twenty miles off, both North and South. Very line shy. Slow trolled Bally Hoo working best, with some fish taken on live Cabalito. At least one per day, as the moon wanes the bite should really pick up. At least one per boat per day with quite a few boats releasing multiples. With the earlier than warmer water the Blues have arrived. A 300 pounder was released this week.

Dorado- Big Bulls this week. The average fish is in the 25 pound range. Our largest was 67 pounds. Very spread, they are schooling up under any floating object. Most taken on live Sardine, some big bulls on Marlin lures. A couple of slower days midweek, but overall some very outstanding Dorado fishing.

Inside- As the water warms, the Roosters are getting a little bigger each week. The Sardine are everywhere inside holding Jacks and Gallos. Releasing thirty or fourty Gallos daily is not uncommon. Most are in the 5 to 10 pound range, with 30 pounders mixed in. Flyfishermen are enjoying wide open Gallo fishing. big Pompano to 15 pounds are being taken off the light house with drift fished live Sardine.

Week Ending May 03, 2009

Water- 74-77 A three degree jump this week! Clear, flat, blue water.

Air- Warming days with highs in the mid 80's. Cool pleasant nights.

Another exceptional fishing week. Very light fishing pressure, lots of squid and sardine, warmer than normal water, are all helping make the fishing in the E. Cape, one of the best years I can recall. All ranch anglers fishing outside are catching limits of big Dorado in the 20 to 50 pound range. Striped Marlin mixed with a few Sailfish are abundant. All boats releasing at least one, with most boats enjoying multiples. Inshore is really wide open. A record year for Sardine has made the inside fishing red hot. Lots of Roosters on most bay beaches, quite a bit larger this week. The Gallos are mixed with Jack Crevalle, every evening hotel guests are enjoying watching the jacks and Roosters tearing up the bait right in front of the patios. African Pompano are taking live bait off the light house. The only species missing is the Yellowfin Tuna.

Dorado- A dead seal floating off Pta. Pescadero is producing limits of large Dorado for all anglers. Last week a chunk of whale blubber was holding the fish. Again this week, much larger fish than normal, from 20 to 50 pounds. Almost all taken on live sardine. Large bulls are being taken on the troll. The Dorado are very spread with fish being taken far outside and very close to shore.

Billfish- An exceptional number of Striped Marlin in the area. There are huge schools of Squid throughout the E. Cape. The Marlin mixed with a few Sailfish are filling up on the Calamari, making for some picky biters again this week. That said, all boats fishing outside, are releasing at least one and some letting multiple fish go. Slow trolled BallyHoo seem to be working best.

Inshore- The Roosters have been biting consistently all winter through this spring. The Gallos are getting bigger this week, with quite a few released in the 20 to 40 pound range. The abundance of Sardine has really made for some excellent inshore fishing. Huge schools of Jack Crevalle mixed with Roosters are giving quite a show every evening, tearing up the schools of Sardine. Big Pompano are being taken off the light house, drift fishing with live sardine. The flyfishermen are crushing the fish inside, releasing twenty Gallos, not unusual. Justin Crump filming a TV show Adventure Guides released a twenty five pounder yesterday.

Week Ending April 26, 2009

Water- 72-75 degrees, flat, clear. The water warmed a couple of degrees this week.

Air- Highs in the low 90's, beautiful calm weather all week.

A very good week! The Dorado fishing really picked back up. The average fish taken has been in the 25 to 30 # range. All anglers fishing outside are catching limits. Striped Marlin are plentiful with anglers spotting literally hundreds of jumpers and tailers daily. Inshore is still producing limitless Roosterfish, big Pompano, and Sierra. The weather has been perfect with flat calm seas all week. We have had large schools of sardine in the area all spring. Mackerel has been available as well. All the good bait has really helped the fishing.

Dorado- I don't remember this many Dorado, this big, ever being taken on the E. Cape. The average fish is in the high twenty pound range. The Dolphin Fish are spread and have moved more South. A piece of floating whale blubber has produced Dorado for five straight days this week. At least fourty local boats have pulled daily limits from under it. I haven't seen one taken under 20 pounds! Literally thousands were taken from it, over the last week! All Dorado taken from this pile were on live sardine. Even larger fish to 50#'s were taken on the troll, bright Squid colors working best. Anglers are also picking up Dorado very close to the beach. Really a great week for Dorado fishing.

Striped Marlin- From three to fifteen miles off shore. The Marlin are thick from La Ribera, Punta Colorado, South. Feeders, jumpers and tailers everywhere. Quite a few being released, anglers targeting billfish are catching one per day. The Marlin are still very line shy. Trolled dead Ballyhoo working best, some taken on lures. A few Sailfish mixed in.

Inshore- Another very good week inside. Lots and lots of smaller Roosters in the two to ten pound range are spread along most E. Cape beachs. If you have sardine you are going to catch lots of Gallos. Pompano have been taking Sardine consistently right off the light house. Sierra are still plentiful.

John

Week Ending April 19, 2009

Water- Windy Friday and Saturday, calm and flat the rest of the week. 72-74 degree water, slightly cooler than last week.

Air- Cool mornings, beautiful spring days in the low 80's.

Slower fishing this week. The inshore bite remains wide open, with outstanding Roosterfish, Sierra, Cabrilla and Pargo fishing. Outside is another story, Striped Marlin are abundant throughout the gulf, with anglers spotting lots of tailers and jumpers. Getting them to bite was another story. The Stripers are very line shy. The Dorado are more spread than in past weeks and have moved closer to shore. The water temperature has remained constant, cooling a degree from last week.

Inshore- Sardine are abundant along almost all E. Cape beaches. They are holding limitless Gallos. The average Rooster is in the five to ten pound class, with a few whoppers to fifty. Fly fishermen are releasing as many as twenty a day. The Pargo, Cabrilla and Sierra bite in front of the hotel continues. Wide open fishing if you have Sardine for bait. Almost everything inside is biting on live Sardine. Flies also working very well for the Gallos.

Striped Marlin- Lots around, but they are extremely line shy. The stripers that are biting are all taking live Mackerel exclusively. Very spread from one mile to twenty off, both North and South.

Dorado- Strong Dorado fishing early in the week. The bite has tapered off in the last few days. The Dolphin fish seem to be moving South and closer to shore. A couple taken per boat per day all in the fifteen to twenty five pound range.

John

Week Ending April 12, 2009

Water- 72-75 degrees. Mostly calm, a couple of windy days.

Air- Warming, spring weather, highs in the low 80's.

A carbon copy of last week. Very good Striped Marlin, and Dorado fishing, with a wide open inshore bite. Dorado are still concentrated 20 miles outside, in warmer 74 to 75 degree water. More Dorado are being taken closer to shore this week with the light house area, producing some thirty pound fish. Striped Marlin are very spread, from one to twenty miles offshore, both North and South. The inshore fishing is incredible. Anglers are releasing as many as twenty Gallos a day. Fifty yards directly off the front of the hotel, anglers are taking, literally hundreds of Pargo, Cabrilla, and Sierra. Both Sardine and Spanish Mackerel are available daily for anglers.

Inshore- The East Cape is loaded with large schools of Sardine. Roosterfish, Sierra, Pargo and Cabrilla are all feeding on these schools. The Gallos are averaging five to seven pounds, with some thirty pounders mixed in. Anglers are releasing up to twenty a day, most taken on Sardine. Directly off the hotel, literally as many as an angler wants, one to two pound Pargo, Cabrilla, and Sierra. Four anglers on my boat filled two ice chests in an hour! All taken on Sardine.

Dorado- Big fish 20 miles outside, in the warmer water. Most taken on the troll, Squid colors working best. Any floating object or structure holding schools of smaller Dorado. Quite a few have been taken closer inside this week, the light house area has produced some thirty pounders. Limits all anglers.

Striped Marlin- Very spread. Tailers and jumpers everywhere. Most taken on live Sardine.
Anglers targeting billfish are releasing at least one per day. Definitely more around than last week.

John

Week Ending April 04, 2009

Water- 72-75 degrees, warmer than normal, afternoon breezes from the east.

Air- Pleasant spring weather, cool mornings, highs in the low eighties.

The very good Dorado fishing continues this week. The Striped Marlin are more abundant and biting more aggressively than last week. Inshore fishing is strong with Roosterfish, Sierra and Pargo all very active. We have had some medium afternoon winds out of the East, everyday this week has been fishable.

Dorado- Bigger this week 15 to 40 pounds. Limits for all anglers. The Dorado are bunching up in warmer 74 to 76 degree water, 20 miles directly off the hotel. Any floating object attracting and holding schools. The larger fish are being taken on the troll, squid colors, petroleros working best. The smaller schooling Dorado are taking live sardine and Flies.

Striped Marlin- Lots of tailers and jumpers. Anglers are sighting dozens daily. The billfish are biting from two miles offshore, to twenty mixed with the Dorado. Not as sleepy as last week. The Stripers are taking mostly live cast Mackerel. All boats targeting Marlin releasing at least one fish with some releasing as many as four. A few taken on squid colored lures.

Inshore- Light pressure as most anglers targeting Dorado and Marlin outside. Lots of Roosterfish biting aggressively both north and south of the hotel, all rocky areas with schools of sardine are holding large schools of Gallos to forty pounds, average 12 to 15.
They are taking flies and live sardine. The Sierra have returned, not as many as last month, bigger fish to seven pounds. Pargo are taking Sardine right off the hotels reef.

This warmer than normal water is helping the fishing. I am targeting the Dorado for the hotel restaurant. Every time I have gone out, I limited on Do Do's from 20 to 40 pounds, almost all the larger fish taken on the troll.

Check the pictures in the photo gallery.

John
