Rancho Leonero Resort
Archived Fish Reports
October through December 2009

Week Ending December 27, 2009

Water- 72-75, cooling, very clear.

Air- Two windy days over the last two weeks. Very pleasant, highs in the 80's, lows in the 60's.

Over the past week the fishing on the E. Cape has been as good as it gets. Weather permitting, the fishing on the E. Cape, is as good in the winter, as any other time of year. Striped marlin, Sailfish, and Dorado are all being caught daily. Very light fishing pressure is insuring limits for most anglers. The bite is two to four miles off the lighthouse, thirty minutes boat ride from the hotel. All three species are mixed in the same area. Lots of tailers. Inshore is also good with Sierra and big Pompano biting aggressively.

Billfish- Lots of both Sails and Stripers, 2 to 4 miles off the light house. Anglers sighting many tailers. About half and half, taken on lures and live mackerel. 3 out of 4 boats releasing at least one.

Dorado- Limits for all anglers. Mixed with the billfish. Taking almost exclusively, white or very light colored hoochies. Average fish 8 #'s. Largest 22#

Inshore. Big Pompano taking live Sardine. Good sized Sierra are abundant, especially at first light. Light colored hoochies best. Four boats departed yesterday.. They took.. 2 Striped Marlin released 1 Sailfish released 22 Dorado to 22#

Thanks...John

Week Ending November 8, 2009

Water- 80-82, Clear, flat.

Air- Very pleasant, highs in the mid 80's.

Light fishing pressure this week, with only four or five ranch boats fishing daily. The Yellowfin, Dorado and Sailfish are all very close to the hotel. Lots of sailfish very spread both North and South of the ranch, within three miles of the beach. Larger tuna to a 100 pounds outside under the porpise, most anglers opting for the smaller fish closer to shore, from the light house south. Fifteen to thirty five pound Yellowfin are all within one mile of the beach. Dorado from five to twenty five pounds are mixed with the Yellowfin. Inshore fishing is very good, with very light fishing pressure. Big Roosters, Pompano, Sierra (early),Pargo, and huge schools of Jack Crevalle are all biting aggresively both north and south of the hotel.

Sailfish- Very spread both north and south of the hotel. Most anglers releasing at least one daily. All fish were caught within two miles of the shore. Live Sardine and Mackerel best, darker trolled lures are working as well.

Yellowfin- Larger fish outside to eighty pounds. A roll of the dice for anglers opting to go outside for the larger tuna, about a 50/50 chance of running into 50 pound plus tuna. Off the lighthouse, and south, the tuna are biting within a mile of the beach, fish from five to thirty pounds are taking live Sardine.

Dorado- Smaller schooling Dorado in the five to twenty pound range, are mixed with the Yellowfin, from the light house south. Limits most anglers. Live Sardine best.

Inside- Very, very light pressure. Almost all anglers are targeting the tuna. Big Roosters to fifty pounds are plentiful. Gary Barnes our ranch manager has been releasing Gallos from the beach daily in the fourty to fifty pound range. Sierra are plentiful, (very early). Pargo, and big Pompano to fifteen pounds are common. Huge schools of Jack Crevalle are roaming up and down the beach in front of the hotel.

Thanks...John

Week Ending October 18, 2009

Water- 81-84, afternoon breezes.

Air- Cooler highs in the 80's.

A little slower than last week. The week started a little slower with lots of smaller Dorado, and Yellowfin being taken inside. The billfishing picked up with and improved Sailfish bite, mixed with some big Blues. Limits for all anglers on Dorado, the average fish around 6-10 pounds. Almost all the fish taken from the lighthouse to south of Frailles, with a mile of the beach. Larger tuna under Porpise outside appeared again yesterday. Giant Squid are the bait of choice, Sardine working as well.

Yellowfin- Smaller fish from 10 to 50 pounds inside, one mile off the beach, South of the Lighthouse to Punta Perfecta. Larger tuna to 200 pounds showed yesterday 40 miles offshore, under Porpise.

Dorado- Limits all anglers on smaller Dorado. Average fish around five pounds. Some larger bulls to thirty. Large schools from the Lighthouse south.

Sailfish and blue Marlin- A better week with quite a few Sails released. Hotel anglers caught three Blues over three hundred pounds. All the billfish are close inshore, mixed with the Dorado and tuna.

Thanks...John

Week Ending October 11, 2009

Water- 83-85 degrees, clear outside, afternoon breezes.

Air- Highs in the 80's, cool, winter is coming early.

The fishing is all concentrated South, very close to shore. The Yellowfin, Dorado and Wahoo are biting from the Light house South to Vinaramas, (Punta Perfecta). All the fish are within a couple of miles of shore, most within one mile. Giant Humbolt Squid is the bait of choice. The Squid are abundant and within a mile and a half of the hotel. Anglers are jigging up a couple of 50 to 70 pounders, plenty for both very effective chum and bait. Live Sardine is also plentiful. Using both together as chum really brings up the fish.

Dorado are plentiful and all anglers are limiting. Most are releasing three or four for every keeper. The average landed fish around 15 pounds. The Yellowfin are scarcer and more spread. Each boat is taking one or two daily. The average fish is around thirty pounds, with 60 to 100 pounders taken daily. We are seeing two or three Wahoo per day at the scales. The average fish is around thirty with a couple this week in the 50's. The Wahoo are taking trolled Marauders and Rapala's exclusively. Sailfish are mixed with the tuna and dorado, the fleet is releasing three or four per day.

Thanks...John

Week Ending October 4, 2009

Water- Cooler, 81-84, Clear and flat

Air- Some rain, cooler, highs in the low 90's

Big tuna again this week. Very, very good Yellowfin fishing! Hundred pound Yellowfin are coming to the beach daily. Very good Dorado fishing with limits for all anglers. Literally all anglers are targeting the tuna. Billfish are around but all the anglers are after the big tuna. The hundred pound fish are powerful, two hours to land most fish on 80# test. The larger tuna are outside 30 to 40 miles due east from the hotel. The bigger tuna are under small pods of porpise. The smaller tuna in the thirty to fourty pound range are within a mile of the beach off the lighthouse south to Frailles. Cut Squid is the best bait. Schooling Dorado from five to thirty five pounds are mixed with the tuna inside. Limits of Dorado for all anglers.

Yellowfin- Big powerful tuna outside. Fish from fourty to two hundred pounds are being taken daily outside, under the porpise. Squid is the best bait. All anglers scoring big tuna daily. Inside off the light house, smaller tuna are taking sardine and Squid, again limits for all anglers. Most of the big fish are taking at least two hours to boat.

Dorado- Limits all anglers. Dorado from five to fourty pounds are closer to shore. Kayakers are taking daily limits in front of the hotel. Very good dorado fishing.

Thanks...John
