Rancho Leonero Resort
Archived Fish Reports
January through June 2010

Week ending June 27, 2010

Water- 80-82, very clear and flat.

Air-  Warmer, highs in the low 90's, cool evenings.

Every week, the fishing just keeps getting better.  This last week was no exception.  Larger tuna, Wahoo fishing that is the best I can recall.  Striped Marlin and even a few Blues available for anglers that were not chasing Yellowfin.  Inshore the Roosterfish are still huge.  Almost all anglers looking for that fifty pounder to release are having luck!  The largest tuna this week 146#.  Big Humboldt Squid are plentiful, biting early in the morning, fun to catch and great bait, between thirty and fifty pounds.  Clear, flat water with light afternoon breezes.

Yellowfin-  Both inside and outside.  Close inshore at the lighthouse and south of Frailles, spread tuna from three to fifty pounds, average fish around ten.  Drift fishing using chunked Squid with a lot of chumming is producing a very consistent bite, Hoochies are also working.  The fish are biting from 50 to 500 meters off the beach.  Outside a number of schools of porpoise are producing larger fish, Jeremy Thomas from Buena Park, Ca. took a 146#er on chunked Squid Friday.  The average fish taken outside was much larger around 30#'s.  Cedar plugs, Hoochies, and squid working.

Wahoo-  Four or Five a day are showing at the cleaning table, in the 25 to 50 # class.  Lots and lots are biting off lures daily.  No wire leader no Wahoo..  in the same inshore areas as the tuna.  Rapalas and Marauders with wire leaders working best.  The Wahoo are hitting the chunked squid, but going right through the leaders.

Billfish-  Lots of Stripers around, very light fishing pressure as most anglers going for the tuna. A few Blues as well.  Anglers targeting billfish are releasing at least one a day.  From Pescadero south  three to five miles offshore.

Inshore-  Big Gallos again this week.  If someone wanted to break a line class IGFA record for Roosterfish, now is the time, fifty to seventy pounders are a daily occurrence.  South of Frailles best.  This phenomenal bite has been going on all season!  Lots of Pargo to 15 #'s and big Pompano to 10#'s.

Thanks...john

Water-79-81  Clear, flat

Air- Cooler than normal, highs in the mid 80's, very pleasant.

Every week it gets a better.  The Let's Talk Hook Up fishing tournament this week enjoyed awesome fishing, with huge Roosterfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin, Dorado, Amberjack, Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Pargo, and numerous other species. Lots of fish taken daily.  By far the most Wahoo taken this year.  Most anglers were fishing with mono, consequently lots more bit off than were taken.  The tournament boats beached 12 in 3 days fishing.  Yellowfin to 46# were taken both far south, close to shore, very spread, or under Porpise further outside.  Lots of Gallos released this week, probably 20 over 50#'s and 10 over 60#'s, uncounted from 30 to 40#'s.  Some nice Dorado to 36#'s.  The Striped marlin are on the bite, very spread both north and south.  A few Blues to 250#'s, released this week.

Roosterfish-  Unreal Gallo fishing.  Big Roosters from 35# to 65#.  All taken in deeper water on Cabalito or Mullet.  Lots released this week.

Yellowfin-  Both under porpise 10-30 miles off, and south of Frailles 1-5 miles off the beach.  The schools under the Porpise hitting Cedar plugs and Hoochies.  Chunk squid and live cabalito are working closer inshore.

Dorado-  Mixed with the Tuna.  The best Dorado week of the year.  To 40#'s.

Wahoo-  12 to the beach in 3 days.  Largest 46#.  Marauders and Rapalas rigged with wire working best.

Good fishing!

Thanks...John

Water-  79-81  Clear, flat

Air- Very pleasant, cool mornings, highs in the mid 80's

Good fishing this week.  The water temperature is where it should be for this time of the year.  After two months of unusually cool water the warmer water has improved the fishing markedly.  Yellowfin are spread, ranch anglers are taking average sized tuna mostly far outside, under Porpoise, in the five to forty pound class daily.  Striped Marlin are biting aggressively, lots of tailers very close to the beach.  An improved Dorado bite, and as usual for this time of year excellent inshore fishing.  Big Roosterfish, Pargo, and some really whopper Pompano are daily fare.  Sardine is still scarce.  Caballito and Mullet are plentiful and available.

Yellowfin-  The bite has moved outside.  Average sized tuna to forty pounds are under schools of Porpoise, the schools are far outside from 20 to 40 miles off the hotel. The first boats on the bite are limiting.  Hoochies and Cedar plugs are working best.

Striped Marlin- Taking trolled lures aggressively.  Very close inside, the drop off, from La Ribera to the Light house is producing lots of good sized Stripers from 150# to 200#.  Anglers targeting billfish are scoring daily.

Dorado-  The Mahi Mahi fishing is improving.  Some very close to the beach.  The average fish around ten pounds.  Kayakers especially in the evenings are scoring off the boat anchorage in front of the hotel.  Squid and tuna belly strips are working.

Inshore- Some big Gallos in the 50 to 70 pound class were released this week.  Big Pompano, see the photos of the angler of the week, are biting especially well off the Light house.  Sierra are abundant.  Very good fishing inside.

Thanks....John

Week ending May 22nd, 2010

Water-77-80, a good five degrees warmer than last week.  Very clear and very flat.

Air-  Warming, highs in the high 80's.  Very pleasant, beautiful, clear, May days.

The warmer water has improved the fishing, by far the best week of this season.  A consistent Yellowfin bite, is providing good sized tuna for almost all anglers daily.  Striped Marlin are plentiful outside, still a little picky on the bite, some boats however are releasing multiples daily.  Three or four quality Dorado are showing at the cleaning table daily.  Big Amberjack to 70 #'s have been taking chunk Squid all week.  Inside fishing has been good with lots of smaller Roosterfish, one flyfisherman released 20 in one day.  Some big Gallos were released as well.  Bart Hall of the Fred Hall Shows, for the third year in a row released a Rooster in the 60 pound class.  Pompano and nice sized Pargo are also being taken daily.  Check out some of the leonero anglers own pictures on our website.
Sardines are still hard to find.  Schools of small Sardine are finally showing up along the hotels beachs, another week or so and they will be big enough.  Caballito and chunked Squid are available and have been effective on everything but the smaller Gallo's.
We enjoyed good fiishing this last week...

Yellowfin-  South of Frailles, very spread, from close inshore to three miles off the beach.  Both chunked Squid and Caballito are working, the abundant Squid and availabel chummed, has been very effective.  The average fish is in the 12# class, the largest around 65 #'s.  Most of the fleet targeting tuna are limiting.

Billfish- A couple of early Blue Marlin were released this week.  There are lots of Striped Marlin both North and South.  They have been picky on the bite.  Some boats are releasing multiples, up to 7 in one day.

Dorado and Amberjack-  A few of each specie coming in daily.  All the fish taken have been good sized.  Dorado from 15 to 40 #'s and the Amberjack to 70#.  Most taken mixed with the tuna.

Inside- Big Roosters, lots of Pompano in the 5# class, nice Pargo to 10 #'s.  Big schools of smaller Gallos have kept the flyfisherman busy, one ranch angler released 20 yesterday.

An update...Angler of the week

Flyfishing... two days in a row.
Released 25 plus Gallos, 25 plus Ladyfish daily

Water- 74-76, clear, flat

Air-  Nice, highs in the mid 80's

Finally!  As the week progressed the fishing the improved daily.  Thursday the Yellowfin showed up.  Quality tuna from thirty to sixty pounds are providing limits for most anglers.   A few Dorado from 20 to 40 pounds are showing at the cleaning table daily.  Lots of very picky Striped Marlin are tailing outside.  Inshore is providing big Roosters, big Pompano, and unlimited Jack Crevalle. Sardine is still scarce, Caballito is working well.  Big Squid also is abundant and available for bait.
The Bart Hall group, yesterday fished three S. Pangas. They caught 12 Yellowtail from 30 to 60 pounds, released Gallos in the 20 to 30 pound class.  Took Pompano and unlimited Jack Crevalle.

Yellowfin-  The tuna are spread south of Frailles one to five miles offshore. Taking both Caballito and Squid. The average fish around 35 #'s.  Limits for most anglers.  The largest taken this week 62#'s.

Dorado-  Quality fish from 20 to 40 #'s. The fleet is bringing in three or four daily.  All taken on Squid.

Striped Marlin-  Very spread, lots of tailers.  Very picky biters, with the fleet releasing a couple daily.  Live Cabalitto working best.

Inside-  Lots of big Roosters.  Quality Pompano, unlimited Jack Crevalle, inshore.  As usual very good fishing inside.

Thanks...John

Week Ending May 8, 2010

Water- Warming rapidly.  Clear and flat.  75-78 degrees.

Air-  Cool mornings, pleasant days, highs in the mid 90's.

Finally the fishing is getting back on track.  Much warmer, cleaner, consistent temperature water this week.  The fishing has improved. The Striped Marlin and Yellowfin bite has been picking up daily.  The fishing is best north, where there is more bait.  Inshore was slow early in the week, the last few days have been much better with Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle and Pompano all biting aggressively.  The warming water and more bait should make for even better fishing next week.

Striped Marlin-  The billfishing is best north of Pta. Pescadero.  More bait and a little warmer water north of the hotel has improved the bite.  About half the boats targeting billfish are releasing at least one.  Both trolled lures and live Cabillito are working.

Yellowfin Tuna-  Smaller Yellowfin from five to ten pounds have been under small pods of porpise, north off Pescadero.  Taking cedar plugs , live Sardine and hoochies.  The first boats on the Porpise are limiting.  Bigger solitary Yellowfin to 50#'s are being taken within three miles of the beach south of the hotel.

Inshore-  A slow start for Roosters early in the week with the bite steadily improving.  Huge schools of Jack Crevalle have kept inside anglers busy all week.  Big Pompano have been biting consistently.  The last couple of days have been very good with Gallos in the 30 to 40 # range released.

Warming, clean, water and more available bait, have made for improved fishing this week. I expect next weeks fishing to be even better.

Thanks...John

Water-  72-75  clear, a couple of breezy days.

Air-  Highs in the mid 80's, beautiful spring weather.

Better fishing this week!  Mixed warm and cold water has hurt the fishing.  We have had water as warm as 80 degrees, the temperature right now is 73.
We have seen an improving bite. There is an abundance of both Sardine and Spanish mackerel available and we are catching schooling Yellowfin for the first time this week.  Anglers are baiting tailing Striped Marlin outside with limited success.  Lots around, but very picky biters.  We are also seeing a couple of decent Dorado at the cleaning table daily.
The inshore fishing is good with lots of Roosters to 40 #'s.  They are mixed with Jacks feeding along most E. Cape beachs.  Sierra are around and anglers are catching some big Pompano.
I expect much better fishing this coming week..

Thanks..John

Week ending April 18, 2010

Water-  Clear, flat, all week.  Mixed water temps 71-75.

Air-  Clear beautiful days.  Cool mornings.

We started the week with a wide open Striped Marlin bite.  Hotel boats were releasing two or three per day.  The water temp dropped by Wednesday and slowed the marlin fishing.  A so so Dorado bite all week with fish in the 5 to 10 pound range.  The last couple of days has produced Yellowfin under porpise from five to fifteen pounds.  Inshore has been wide open.  Big Roosters in the fifty pound plus class, are taking Cabalitto and cast lures.  This should be another exceptional Roosterfish year!  Pompano are abundant, and as usual for this time of year, the Pargo are biting aggressively.  Live bait is still hard to find.

Striped Marlin-  Early in the week all boats were releasing Stripers.  The bite has slowed, lots of tailers, but very picky biters.  The fish are around and that will change any day.

Yellowfin-  A school of Porpise fifteen miles directly off the hotel, has been holding Yellowfin from 5 to 20 poundsfor the last couple of days.  Cedar plugs are working best.

Thanks...John

Air temps- low 80's, gorgeous weather.

Water- 73-77, clear

Everyone is excited about the strong Stripe Marlin bite! Our boats are releasing 2 -4 per day, biting on squid color lures and trollers, as well as live Caballito.

The bite is spread North and South, but many caught close to shark buoys off of Pescadero.

There is also a smattering of Dorado up to 15 pounds hitting marlin lures and live Caballito.

Inside fishing is spectacular! Lots of Skip Jack, Pompano, and Roosterfish up to 40 pounds.

Thanks...John

Week ending April 4, 2010

Water- 71-73  Afternoon winds, flat midweek.

Air-  Pleasant, highs in the low 80's.

Striped Marlin are biting both north and south.  Lots of tailers, taking both trolled lures and live jack.  They are the only blue water species around this week.  Inshore is a different story with Roosterfish abundant, lots of big African Pompano close inside.  Pargo are biting and as usual this time of year Sierra are everywhere.  Bait has been tough,  Squid and smaller Jacks are available.

Striped Marlin-  Lots of tailers both north and south.  The bite was more consistent around the shark buoys off Pta. Pescadero.  Most taking Squid colored lures.  Some on Cabbalito.

Inshore-  Roosterfish to 30#'s and lots in the 5 to 10 # range.  Wide open fishing for Gallos off the beach.  Big African Pompano are being taken off the reefs in front. Good Pargo fishing, and lots of Sierra.

A quick update...

Beautiful weather this week, with calm mornings and light afternoon breezes.

Water- 71-73, clear

Very light fishing pressure, all Leonero anglers are fishing close to shore. Using mostly cast iron. Bait is scarce, with some Mackerel available.

Roosters are running with Jack Crevalle along the beachs. Both are taking both live bait and cast lures. The largest Gallo released this week was around 30#'s.

Yellowtail to 35#'s are directly off the hotel to La Ribera. Most being taken off the close inshore drop offs. Iron jigged off the bottom working best. A few taken on live Macks.

There are photos of these fish on the hotel website.

Thanks...John

Week ending March 28, 2010

Water- 72-75 degrees, warmer than last week.  Windy conditions most of the week.

Air- Pleasant spring days.  Highs in the mid 80's.

Poor weather conditions most of the week.  Hotel boats have been fishing daily, catching billfish, Jacks, Yellowtail, the occasional Dorado, and some tuna. Inside the fishing has been good with Sierra, Pargo, and big Roosterfishall biting.
Striped Marlin are abundant North of the hotel off Pescadero.  Most boats are releasing at least one daily.  We had one Sailfish released this week.  Lots of smaller tuna , mostly Skipjack, are biting off La Ribera and the Lighthouse.  The occasional Amberjack and Yellowtail are taking iron off the bottom on the inshore dropoffs.  A few Dorado to 25# were taken over the week.  A real mixed bag this week.  We should get a break with the weather anytime.  Flat seas will turn on the fishing.

Striped Marlin-  Taking both trolled lures and live bait.  There are lots of tailers off Pta. Pescadero.  Most boats releasing a fish daily.

Yellowtail and Amberjack-  Big fish are being taken off the inside ledges.  Yo Yoing iron off the bottom working.    Thirty to fifty pound class fish are not uncommon.  A so so bite with slack tide producing the most fish.

Tuna-  Skipjack in the five pound range are taking Hoochies, off the La Ribera and the Lighthouse.

Inshore-  Good fishing inside.  Big Roosters to 50#'s are abundant and feeding along most south beachs.  Pargo are biting.  As usual there are lots of Sierra close inshore.

Thanks...John

Week Ending March 21, 2010

Water-  69-72    Cooler than last week.  Afternoon winds for most of the week. The hotel boats fished every day.

Air-  Very pleasant spring days.  Highs are in the low 80's.

A Mixed bag this week.  A strong consistent Striped Marlin bite everyday.  Dorado are around one day and absent the next.  Inshore, especially in the last couple of days, has improved with large Yellowtail and Amberjack being taken off the dropoffs close inside.  Roosterfish are also more abundant and bigger than last week.  Good live bait has been hard to find.

Striped Marlin-  A very consistent bite.  Almost all boats targeting Stripers are releasing at least one per day.  The billfish are both North and South from Pescadero to Frailles, from two to six miles offshore.  Better than half taken on the troll.  Dead Ballyhoo and live Caballito working as well.

Dorado-  Good fishing early in the week, but the bite has slowed.  Bulls to 20 pounds and lots of 5 to 7 #ers taking mostly Hoochies from the Light House South.  From a hundred yards to two miles off the beach.

Inshore-  Quality Yellowtail in the 30 to 40 pound class, and Amberjack from 40 to 60 #'s have been biting aggressively since Thursday.  Heavy iron yo-yo'ed off the inshore drop offs, a half, to two miles directly off the hotel, is producing some big fish.  I have not seen one under thirty, most are around fourty.  Anglers staying inside are taking at least two per day.  The Roosterfish this week are a little larger, to thirty pounds.  There are lots around, especailly in the afternoon.

Thanks...John

Week ending.. March 13 2010

Water 73-76  warmer than normal.  Afternoon winds most of the week.  Fishable everyday except Friday.

Air-  Cool evenings and mornings. Pleasant days with highs in the low 80's.

A mixed bag this week.  Striped Marlin have been biting aggressively last week and until about Tuesday this week.  The bite has dropped off.  With the warmer than usual water, it shouldn't take long to pick back up.  Yellowfin mixed with Skipjack were being taken early in the week.  Inside has been very good  with quality  Roosters, Jack Crevalle, Sierra, Pargo, and the occasional Yellowtail.  This week we have had afternoon winds, all fishable days, except for Friday.  The hotel has been busy for March, we are sending out five or six boats daily.

Striped Marlin-  A very strong bite with all boats releasing at least one per day until mid week.  The extra five degrees in temperature has made for typical April billfishing.  Most taken on trolled lures.

Dorado-  Slower this week.  Very good Dorado fishing last week with limits for most anglers of fish in the 10 to 15 pound range.

Tuna-  Yellowfin mixed with Skipjack.  Most of the tuna are being taken from the lighthouse south to Frailles, from one to three miles off the beach.  A few very big solitary Yellowfin have been taken just outside the park in the Frailles canyon area.  Most are from five to ten pounds.  Trolled Hoochies and live Sardine working.

Inside- As usual for this time of year, the inshore fishing is very good.  we have released some Roosters in the 30# class this week.  Lots of  Gallos mixed with Jacks are chasing bait, charging up and down the beach in front of the hotel.  Sierra are abundant taking lures from the beach and just offshore.  The best bite for Sierra is always the early morning.  A few Yellowtail in the 20 # range this week.

Thanks...John

Week Ending February 21, 2010

Water-  Warmer than usual, 72-75, clear flat

Air- Very pleasant highs in the low 80's.  No wind.

A very pleasant week, flat, calm water, air temperatures are highs in the low 80's.  Very light fishing pressure with two or three boats fishing daily in all the E. Cape.
Both Striped Marlin and Sailfish are plentiful right off the hotel and South, very close to shore.  All boats releasing either a Sail or a Striper.  Inshore there are unbelievably huge schools of Jack Crevalle mixed with Roosterfish.  They have been feeding on large schools of Caballito, pushing them right up on the beach.  Quite a sight, the inshore water turns into churning chaos.  Both Yellowtail and Grouper are being taken as well.

Billfish- About half Sails and half Stripers.  Lots of tailers from one to five miles off the beach.  The bite is best between La Ribera and the Light House.  Live Cabalitto and dark trolled lures are both working.  Very light pressure, most boats are releasing at least one.

Inshore-  lots of action right in front of the hotel.  The Jacks and Gallos are really tearing up the front, feeding on large schools of bait.  Roosterfish are abundant taking both bait and lures.  The local pangeros, fishing the rocks and drop-offs inside, are picking up quality Grouper and Yellowtail.

Thanks...John
