July 2010

Week Ending July 25, 2010

Water- 73-83, Cooler water south of the Lt House, warmer north.  Still very mixed with cooler green patch inside.

Air- Cooler than normal, very pleasant, highs in the high 80's.

Good fishing!  A very strong Yellowfin bite all week, bigger Dorado, both Striped and Blue Marlin are being released daily, a couple of big Wahoo.  As usual for this year lots of Roosterfish in the 50# class.

Yellowfin-  Straight off the hotel and north, 5 to 40 miles out.  Under Porpise, three big schools holding numerous feeding  pods of Porpise and tuna.  Less pressure as the fleet boats are spread.  All anglers limiting, average fish 10 #'s to 156#'s.  A couple of 100 plus pounders at the cleaning table daily. Sardine, chunked squid, cedar plugs, hoochies are all working.

Billfish-  Some big Blues released this week.  Striped marlin are taking mostly lures inside and outside.  No fishing pressure, lots of jumpers and tailers.

Dorado-  Closer inside, a very good bite early in the week right off the hotel.  Bigger fish, average 10#'s, some bulls in the 50 # range.  Light pressure as most anglers targeting tuna.  Live sardine, chunked squid, and trolled hoochies all working.

Wahoo-  A couple of 60# Wahoo taken this week.

Inside- Big Gallos as usual this week.  A 45 #er was taken off the beach by a flyfisherman on Friday (check out our website for photos).  Lots in the 50# class released again this week. A few big Pompano, and believe it or not some Sierra.  Very light pressure, almost everyone fishing outside.

Thanks...John

Week ending July 11, 2010

Water-  74-82,  Patchy warm and cool water, green close to the hotel, clearer and warmer south of Pulmo.

Air- Unusually cool, very pleasant, highs in the low 80's.

They can't all be outstanding fishing weeks.  After six straight weeks of excellent fishing, this past week has been slow.  The water turned, with cool green water close to the hotel, and warmer cleaner water further south.  A few Yellow Fin were taken daily, we had a decent Striped Marlin bite, smaller Dorado, and slower but still decent inshore fishing.  The good news is these cold water spells never last long.  I expect the fishing to return to normal any day.

Dorado-  Mostly smaller 5# fish, a couple of bigger bulls were taken.  Almost all the Dorado are south of Frailles a mile to three offshore.  Trolled Hoochies and Sardine working best.

Yellowfin-  A few taken inside, larger tuna to 30#'s under Porpise outside 10 to 30 miles off Pescadero.  The last couple of days the tuna fishing has improved.  Sardine, chunked Squid, and Hoochies all working.

Striped Marlin-  A decent bite.  Most billfish biting south within three miles of shore.  Most taken on darker trolled lures.  Live cabalitto also working.

Thanks...John

Week Ending July 4, 2010

Water-  77-82` Clear, flat, some afternoon breezes

Air-  Very cool for July, highs in the 80's.

Another outstanding fishing week.  Sardine are finally available and the Yellow Fin fishing has improved.  More and larger schools of Porpoise are holding tuna to 150#'s.  Very spread schools with multiple pods of Porpoise and tuna feeding aggressively.  This really helps the fishing as all the boats aren't driving the fish down by piling up on one school.  More Dorado than last week, still no real size.  Striped Marlin are abundant and anglers targeting them are releasing multiples daily.  Inside the Rooster fishing is awesome with daily releases of multiple Gallos over 50#'s.  Some big Pompano taken this week in the 15# class.

Yellowfin-  Inside and outside.  Tuna are being taken within 50 meters of the beach off the light house.  South of Frailles is also producing Yellowfin a little further off.  Sardine is by far the bait of choice, chunked squid is working as well. Outside from three to thirty miles offshore, three or four very spread schools of Porpise are holding lots of tuna to 150#'s.  Each school is holding multiple pods of feeding Porpoise, the fleet boats are very spread, plenty of tuna for all.  All anglers limiting.

Dorado- A lot more around this week.  Average fish 5 to 10 #'s largest around 35#.  Being taken mostly on the troll.  South of Frailles to white cliffs, within a mile of the beach best.

Striped Marlin-  Light pressure.  Most anglers that are limiting on tuna are fishing for Stripers in the afternoon.  They are releasing at least one or two daily.

Inside-  Everyday a number of Roosterfish over 50#'s are being released.  The best Gallo fishing I can recall.  Big Pompano in the 15# class are being taken daily.

Thanks...John
