Rancho Leonero - Oasis of 'Old Baja' Charm

If it's a "long way" to Tipperary, it may seem farther to the East Cape's Hotel Rancho Leonero. But believe me, Leonero is well worth the one-hour, 40-mile van ride from San Jose del Cabo International Airport. Por ejemplo, the first thing they tell you upon checking in is: "Put away the wallets, charge your meals, drinks and all while you're here, and we will settle finances when you check out."

Now that's my idea of "Old Baja Charm." A veritable East Cape oasis, Leonero is quite a bit more than just great fishing. In the heat of summer, the big blacks and blues come steaming into the gulf. But should you tire of the great fishing, Leonero is complete with a sizable pool located right on the beach, and a pair of shaded, poolside hammocks just an arm-length away from the bar. All 26 comfortable rooms are air-conditioned.

Also available are a dozen kayaks, horseback riding, great snorkeling and scuba diving immediately off shore - while a full gym completes the amenities. You won't even get your feet wet when hopping aboard their boats: a "porta-pier" delivers anglers to their boats. There are 10 cruisers (from 26-40 feet) and 12 pangas. The East Cape turns on April through November, and a 338-pound yellowfin tuna recently was caught off the East Cape. For booking call (800) 646-2252.
