January Dive Reports, Sea of Cortez,
Mexico

Let’s go diving!
Traffic on the East Cape is very quiet.
PADI Master Instructor Ken Dunlop became tired of
waiting for a tour to guide and decided to go for a dive
at Cerro Verde with his wife. Here is his report of
current conditions. Things went very well in the water
yesterday. Conditions were a little murky in the first
20 feet, but once we dropped down below thirty vis
opened up to about 60 maybe 80 feet. We hit the 80 foot
mark on the rock slide...and to our delight there sat
the Stone fish...we lost count on the number of green
eels, many schooling fish. Overall not a bad dive. Water
temp was 73 degrees so an hour long dive was easily
down...we both had on three mm’s.

Happy Divers
Where
there is a will there is a way
New Years greeted the East Cape with strong north
winds and the wind has not let up. Years of
experience tells us Punta Perico, one of our premier
dive sites, is in the lee and protected from strong
wind when the north winds prevail. While we have
huge surf and big waves in Los Barriles it is flat
as a pancake in the Bay of Dreams and at Punta
Perico. In years past it was always a cultural
experience, as we had to truck down a bumpy dirt
road through the desert to reach the Bay of Dreams.
Times do change! Last year the road was paved and
now we enjoy the picturesque desert land scape with
beautiful cactus gardens and rock formations along
the way.
Upon arrival at the Bay of Dreams we meet up with
our amigo Callo. He is a pangero who has reliably
taxied us in his boat to the dive sites of the area
for many years. Punta Perico has an array of unusual
underwater rock formations and hosts a huge variety
of sea life. The diving here is never disappointing
and this day was no exception. With 30 to 50 foot
vis and 73 to 74 degree bottom temperature we
enjoyed a wonderful day of diving. |
